Steve Nash tweaks back getting out of bed, still likely to practice Thursday, is day-to-day

Steve Nash is day-to-day, according to the Lakers. He could be back playing with the Lakers by Friday night.

But in a sign of how fragile things are with the former MVP, who is about to turn 40 (Feb. 7), he didn’t practice on Monday as expected after tweaking his back getting out of bed, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Nash has played just six games this season for the Lakers due to the nerve root issue that impacts his back and leg. He has been in Vancouver both getting treatment and retraining his body not to make the moves that aggravate the issue.

Nash is back with the Lakers and here is the official statement, via Lakers’ spokesman John Black.

“The plan for him is to have a practice on Thursday and he’s basically day-to-day,” Black said. “We’ll update you on whether he’ll play Friday based on how Thursday’s practice goes.”

Here is what Nash himself told the Times.

“I have no idea what’s going to happen, but I’ve done all the work and I feel ready to practice again,” said Nash, who has been rehabilitating away from the team in Vancouver, Canada. “I’m really excited, just to be part of the team again.”

The Lakers could use Nash back in a lineup that has had to lean on D-League pickup Kendall Marshall at the point (although he has played well and may be one of those guys who thrives in the Mike D’Antoni system, plus he has found his previously lost shot). Jordan Farmar and Steve Blake also could return to the team next week.

Nash is not going to be what he once was at age 40, but for a guy who has meant so much to the game, a guy with a gift of court vision and an amazing ability to dictate a game, I want to see him leave the game on his terms. He should leave playing well, not because injury forced him out. I hope he meets that goal (and ruins the hopes of selfish Lakers fans trying to push him out to door to save some cash against the cap).
