Pau Gasol says playoffs ‘are a utopia right now’ for Lakers

From Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary:

uto·pia (noun) yu̇-ˈtō-pē-ə :  an imaginary and indefinitely remote place.

Pau Gasol has been a bit more vocal as of late on the topic of the Lakers’ recent struggles, even going so far as to throw a tantrum in front of teammates and Kobe Bryant in the locker room following an especially unpleasant loss to the Orlando Magic.

Speaking to reporters in Spanish following the loss to the Knicks in New York on Sunday, Gasol continued to deliver some honest commentary about the fortunes of his team moving forward, and obviously the future isn’t exactly bright.

As translated by HoopsHype:

The playoffs are a utopia right now. (…) The Western Conference has a lot of great teams that are playing much better than us right now. (…) If things don’t change very quickly, I don’t know if we will have many chances.

Gasol isn’t giving up, and he isn’t painting an unnecessarily gloomy image in hopes that all of the constant trade rumors that swirl around him might some day come to fruition.

He’s speaking the truth.

The Lakers are currently 13 games under .500, and nine and a half games out of the final playoff spot in the West, with four teams ahead of them before we even get there. It’s honestly easier and more accurate to refer to L.A. as being just two teams away from being the worst in the Conference — something Gasol knows all too well, and isn’t afraid to articulate in another language.

The team isn’t that great this year, but I like the fight they still have, especially Pau

    • sportsfan18 - Jan 28, 2014 at 7:52 AM

Pau isn’t going to be around for their turnaround…

  2. lakerade - Jan 28, 2014 at 2:38 AM

    No bueno.

  3. eugenesaxe1 - Jan 28, 2014 at 2:39 AM

Methinks Pau is trying to talk his way out of town.

    • danfrommv - Jan 28, 2014 at 12:16 PM

Pau to the Suns for expiring contract and one of their 1st round and one of their 2nd round picks from the Steve Nash (debacle) trade. Pau gets to play in the playoffs, the Lakers tank, and they get some sorely needed draft picks back

  4. heatlebronwade - Jan 28, 2014 at 3:57 AM

Pau is minor in comparrison to his odder brother Mark Gasol. Mark is a greater ,rebounder tougher and is more valuable to the grizzlies. Mark is the one to the hall of fame and much better and tougher.

That comment is just rude. Pau is definitely a future Hall-of Famer and might find his way into an International shrine as well. Rookie of the Year, 2x NBA Champion, and 4 NBA All-Star, Grizzlies all-time leading scorer, and that still doesn’t even touch his International accolades. Pau is a great player who deserves to play out his remaining years without all this criticism.

    Lakers 16 & 29

Jazz 15 & 29 and the Jazz are LAST in the West.

No, I don’t think the playoffs are attainable even in a dream…

Lakers won’t make the playoffs next year either…

The Lakers, after this season, will be below .500 as a team for the past two seasons.

The Lakers will be better next year, but not enough to keep them from being below .500 as a team for the three year stretch that concludes next season (last yr, this yr and next yr they will be below .500 for those 3 yrs as a team).

      stop trolling

      • sportsfan18 - Jan 28, 2014 at 12:43 PM

Trolling? I’m stating what I think will happen. Waiting until something happens and then saying I knew that would happen is weak. I’m stating what I feel will happen before it does is all.

        Last season 45 & 37
This season 34 & 48 (projecting, have INCREASED their win% from current .356 up to .415)
        Next season 43 & 39

        3 yr total 122 & 124

Now others, as it their want, may state what they think too. That is the purpose of internet sites such as this where public comments are welcome.

I haven’t put any individual down, a player, called anyone names etc…

    • bougin89 - Jan 28, 2014 at 11:27 AM

The Bucks are 8 & 36. We’re better at losing.

      • sportsfan18 - Jan 28, 2014 at 3:24 PM

Good one! Any team with Jennings is going to suck.

      • bougin89 - Jan 29, 2014 at 8:48 AM

Well we don’t have Jennings anymore but we have Ekpe Udoh, Mayo, Knight, and now this post is getting too depressing so I’m stopping right there.

    • musician0785 - Jan 28, 2014 at 11:32 AM

“The Lakers will be better next year, but not enough to keep them from being below .500 as a team for the three year stretch that concludes next season (last yr, this yr and next yr they will be below .500 for those 3 yrs as a team).”………………so your guessing…..nobody cares about your trollish predictions….

      • sportsfan18 - Jan 28, 2014 at 12:48 PM

yeah, people guess ALL the time. There are zillions of articles each year on all sports and teams predicting (guessing) teams final standings etc…

People predict/guess who’ll win the Super Bowl, player of the year etc…

IT happens on these sites ALL the time too. People state their “trollish predictions” on sites such as these all the time.

We guess (or as you say give “trollish” predictions) the division standings on here.

I’ve seen many users on this very site give their “trollish” predictions as to who would finish in what order in the divisions (Knicks, Nets etc…).

Why the dislike when I do it Musician? Is it SIMPLY because you like the Lakers and SIMPLY don’t like what I’m saying?

This is America. We are allowed free speech. I haven’t called you names etc…

People need to have thicker skin especially when all I’ve done is no different than many do on here with their guesses about finish, championships, player of the year, MVP’s etc….

    • danfrommv - Jan 28, 2014 at 12:13 PM

Last year they were 45-37. How is that below .500?

    • asimonetti88 - Jan 28, 2014 at 1:22 PM

I like how you’re already able to predict next season. You should use those powers for something good, like telling us all which stocks to buy.

      • sportsfan18 - Jan 28, 2014 at 2:04 PM

Uh, MANY other posters on this site and others do the EXACT same thing… grow up.

      • sportsfan18 - Jan 28, 2014 at 2:05 PM

so many people, like you, said a year or so ago how the Lakers would be back, rebuild in a hurry when the summer of 2014 came around.

ALL of those people were talking back then about something MORE than a year out.

Tis a normal part of sports site discussions that you yourself partake in.

Since you do it too, I guess you just don’t like it when someone doesn’t say something nice about your team.

  6. billtetley53 - Jan 28, 2014 at 2:59 PM

sports, pay no mind to musician.

His posts consist of telling people to quit trolling, and that’s it. He has no basketball knowledge whatsoever.

He is butthurt because he lives vicariously through his sports team and when they stink, his life us horrible.

He ccant take that his team , and him by proxy are getting picked on, when he couldn’t keep his mouth shut when they were winning…..the of dish it out but can’t take it thing. He, like most lakers fans, behave like a child.

I hope they don’t get demolished by the pacers tonight lol.
