Matt Barnes ejected for hard foul on Kevin Love (VIDEO)

Dec 23, 2013, 1:55 AM EDT

It’s some Bruin on Bruin crime.

Kevin Love was having a monster night (he finished with 45 and 19) and the Clippers big men had no answer for him (or Nikola Pekovic) when this happened:

Love got the ball at the three point line, pump faked and that just burned Ryan Hollins, so Love put it on the floor and drove the lane, went up and Matt Barnes came in with the hard foul. Words were exchanged, and they were not words with friends. The referees called it a Flagrant 1, reviewed it and after seeing a hit to the head upgraded this to a Flagrant 2 and ejected Barnes.

To me, the league needs to lessen this penalty — yes it was certainly a foul and there was contact to the head, but Barnes was making a play on the ball here and it wasn’t that severe. This wasn’t a swing at Love’s head.

What could really get Barnes in trouble is he didn’t leave the court immediately, instead going over to argue with the referee. He did not leave the court in a timely manner.

My guess is Barnes gets just a fine for this, no suspension. But not leaving the court could make it a healthy suspension.

Barnes way of getting any bit of attention in the league.

  2. muhangis - Dec 23, 2013 at 2:26 AM

But I don’t think it deserved ejection.

    It didnt deserve a ejection?

    it deserves a suspension.

Get this clown out of the league

His reaction right after the hit on Love and esp. after he heard that his foul got an upgrade showed to all of us his smart and intelligent charackter properties.

I agree that it should have been only Flagrant 1 but his reaktion after that showed that he is not the smartest man on earth…..

Yo dude, for real, you’re adding K’s where C’s belong which is common gang member thing for Bloods or people against the Crip culture do.

You’re a joke and obviously not the smartest man on earth either. Hope someone in all blue walks up to you someday and pistol whips you.

        Merry Christmas to you.

Can’t watch the vid ’cause it’s blocked where I am, but based upon Kurt’s depiction–which sounds trustworthy and accurate–I predict a downgrade and a fine. I’m ambivalent on the rules on such foul, simply because they are so selectively enforced, like all the others.

The ref were ridiculously bad in this game.

  7. cakemixa - Dec 23, 2013 at 8:24 AM

You really gotta give it to him. The guy strives to be as fake of a tough guy as Perkins. Garnett, etc.

Did he tweet something stupid about it then delete it right after?

  8. jerdogthompson - Dec 23, 2013 at 10:55 AM

Clearly Matt was making a play on the ball. Flagrant 1 is a stretch, but hey, refs need to afford the Wolves some sort of chance to pull out a win. How’d that turn out for ya guys?

  9. jerdogthompson - Dec 23, 2013 at 10:57 AM

Fake tough guy huh? I got a hundred bucks that says I could tie one hand behind Matts back and blindfold him and he would still knock the stupid from your chops.

    • jimeejohnson - Dec 23, 2013 at 12:07 PM

He’s a punk. Always has been. Love would have squashed Barnes like the ant he really is. Not only that, he’s a stupid ass. But he’s your buddy so it’s ok.

that was the worst refereed game in the history of basketball. they gave the wolves every chance in the world to win that game and they still couldn’t pull it off

  11. steelcitywhitty - Dec 23, 2013 at 4:42 PM

It was a hard foul to the head of a star player. Flagrant 2. You think the same call is not made if the foul was made against LeBron. Plus after the hard foul, Matt walked up on Love trying to instigate a fight. Matt is a goon and he should be treated as such.

The NBA in this decade has come to stand for No Balls Anywhere.
Matt Barnes and Chris Paul are the only ones with any toughness on the Clippers, maybe the only 2 that could have survived when REAL basketball was played, a long time ago. (before the 3 pt shot, as a reference).

That’s a common foul. I can’t believe dudes are getting ejected for hits like that. I guess it has more to do with Barnes’ reputation than what he actually did.
