Report: Mike Woodson told J.R. Smith to take better shots, so he took just one Friday

The soap opera that is the Knicks 2013-14 season continues.

J.R. Smith missed training camp with a knee injury then the start of the season following a league suspension (for testing positive for marijuana use for a third time).

After all that, he has never been able to find a groove this season — he is shooting just 34.2 percent this season (it was 42.2 percent last season). The Knicks need more offense and he has not been able to provide it this year.

Which led to a an in-game struggle Friday between him and coach Mike Woodson, followed by Smith intentionally going into a shell Friday, reports Frank Isola of the New York Daily News.

According to a team source, Woodson admonished Smith for poor shot selection during the Bulls game and then became upset over something Smith said on the bench. Woodson waited until after the game to express his disappointment with Smith’s attitude and reminded the volatile shooting guard that he’s been his strongest advocate for the past two seasons.

“Mike said that after all I’ve done for you I can’t have you talking back to me like that,” the source claimed. The same source added that Smith made a lewd comment that angered Woodson….

Saturday night, Smith scored two points, making just one shot on eight attempts in 24 minutes, and appeared to be benched in the fourth quarter of a 111-106 win over the Hawks at the Garden.

Smith was averaging 11.6 shots a game going into this game. And he is missing a lot, check out his shot chart from this season.

Saturday night in a Knicks win over the Hawks Smith took 8 shots, hitting just one.

Even after looking at all that, it strikes me as a slippery slope for Mike Woodson to start questioning any of his players’ shot selection. That is especially true of Smith, who always has taken bad shots he just isn’t making them with the same regularity now. Smith made those shots on his way to being Sixth Man of the Year last year, Woodson just needs to hope those shots start falling now.

“Saturday night, Smith…appeared to be benched in the fourth quarter of a 111-106 win over the Hawks at the Garden.”

    JR Bricks.

If he had been in there instead of Tim, WE LOSE.

    • pbtunpaidwriter - Dec 15, 2013 at 4:17 PM

I guess JR doesn’t usually ever take good shots then.

Well did he make that shot or not !? C’mon!

    • ProBasketballPundit - Dec 15, 2013 at 2:17 PM

He did not, 0-1 for the game. Although he did get fouled on a shot and was 2-2 free throws. So in a way you could say he took two shots and made one.

Misleading headline Mr. Helin. I cam here ready to admonish Smith for pouting (trying to prove a point by taking one shot) but he took 8 and made 1. Different story. I had a teammate that did that in the 2nd half of a game and not shooting at all b/c you can’t shoot your way is one of the most selfish acts in basketball.

Smith: just another drug addled, illiterate professional basketball player who does the “look at me, look at me” thing & has nothing to look at. Why do these idiot GMs and owners sign trash like Smith?!

He should find a way to use cannabis without getting caught. Alcohol is far more insidious but pea brain losers don’t consider it a drug.

        Amen, Jimee.

Woodson is coach so he has a right to admonish that thug.

“The same source added that Smith made a lewd comment.” Do tell? Was it one of those “s*ck my di*k” or “f**k U” or how about “STFU”? I read and see those types of comments everyday and everywhere my browser takes me to read and see the news. Isn’t it time we stopped hiding behind the curtain? Just go ahead and tell us what he actually said. We’ve got our big boy pants on.

This was the smartest move Woodson has made all year. Smith & Felton poor play have been the biggest reason why this years team is struggling so badly. If you actually watched the game last night, with Felton out & Smith out down the stretch in favor of Hardaway Jr., you saw for the 1st time this season last seasons Knicks. Woodson kept rookie Tim Hardaway Jr. in the game in place of Smith, who was shooting just 1-of-8. Hardaway played 27 minutes to 24 for Smith and rewarded the team with perhaps his most complete game of the season: 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting, four rebounds, two assists and three steals. Dolan had a front row seat last night right next to the Knicks bench. Woodson might have just saved his job & a trade is probably going down early this week as a ton of their summer signings can get traded as of today.

That shooting chart is absolutely atrocious.

Woody’s a good coach but man oh man he lost that team. And he’s right, after all he’s done for JR and he’s going to act like that!? What a loser.

    • Mr. Wright 212 - Dec 15, 2013 at 3:58 PM

Not only the shot chart, but the ridiculous ANGLES and body contortions that he gets into to take the shots. horrific Rucker League garbage.

  9. dinofrank60 - Dec 15, 2013 at 11:05 PM

Coaches think that any shot that they don’t draw up is a bad shot.
Fans think that any shot that is not wide open or is contested by a hand in the face is a bad shot.

But both agree: ANY shot taken by JR Smith is a bad shot.

  10. louhudson23 - Dec 16, 2013 at 11:37 AM

The question is who signs bums like this(repeatedly),and why would his coach be an advocate for him? He is a coach killing, selfish player who isn’t very good, even at what he purports to be good at,not to mention his lack of fundamental skills and virtual ignorance of the actual point of the game…..And don’t blame race or weed for Smith’s problems. Millions of bright, successful, and hard working individuals smoke weed, are black or both. Smith is just a fool, high or not….

    • redbaronx - Dec 16, 2013 at 1:29 PM

@louhudson23 – Amen. Weed has nothing to do with it. He’s just not a very bright individual, or basketball player.

    • dinofrank60 - Dec 16, 2013 at 11:40 PM

Because he can score. At least he used to be able to score, but he is the reigning Sixth Man of the Year.
