Report: Lakers called Knicks to express interest in Iman Shumpert

The Lakers have exactly zero healthy point guards on the roster at the moment, and for a team experiencing more than its fair share of injury issues for the second straight season, it makes sense to make cursory calls around the league to see who might be available in trade.

Iman Shumpert — not a point guard obviously, but a talented two-way player — has been receiving sideways looks from the Knicks since he couldn’t finish a Summer League stint due to a prior commitment with adidas, and it’s been rumored that he could be had in a deal for the right price.

The Lakers, according to a report from Chris Broussard of ESPN.com, contacted the Knicks to see if indeed that was the case.

The Lakers recently called the Knicks to express their interest in Iman Shumpert, according to sources close to the situation.

No trade is imminent, and sources say the Lakers’ call was more about doing their due diligence; it’s well-known Shumpert is available. The Lakers are unlikely to make a deal before the end of their current four-game trip, which concludes Tuesday night in Memphis. …

Sources say the Lakers also are interested in another Knicks player — center Tyson Chandler. The Lakers did not inquire about Chandler when they called about Shumpert, but they are weighing whether to propose a Pau Gasol-for-Chandler trade, according to sources.

Gasol may be on the block, but it’s unclear if the Knicks would trade the anchor of their defense in Chandler for a player more suited to producing on the offensive end of the floor. On the Lakers side, Gasol’s contract comes off the books at the end of the season. But if they take on Chandler, who comes with major health concerns, they’ll have committed to his $14.5 million salary for an additional season.

Back to Shumpert, it’s important to remember here that this is what general managers do — they are in constant discussions with other teams about possible trade scenarios throughout the season. But with the Lakers dealing with so many injuries and needing desperately to upgrade the talent on the roster to try to make a push for a spot in the postseason, it would appear that these types of calls will increase in frequency as the Feb. 20 trade deadline approaches.
