Rudy Gay gets standing ovation from Kings’ fans (VIDEO)

Dec 10, 2013, 10:58 AM EDT

Rudy Gay did not suit up for the Sacramento Kings Monday night. Not that they needed him, they got 32 from DeMarcus Cousins, 31 from Derrick Williams and 24 from Isaiah Thomas as they rolled to an impressive win over Dallas.

However, when Gay (and Quincy Acy and Aaron Gray) walked into the building Monday night they got a nice standing ovation from the fans and from the guys on the Kings’ bench. Gay may not be popular in the NBA “Blogosphere” but right now he is popular in Sacramento.

And that can last — if he can learn to play within the team system. Feed Cousins the rock in the post, don’t fire off a jumper over his head. Use the pick-and-roll, don’t gravitate toward isolation sets. Long two pointers are not your friend. This has the potential to be a good pairing in Sacramento and I get why they rolled the dice on it, but it’s still a gamble.

It’s really too bad that Rudy is such a non-team player. He gets hot sometimes and looks like a top 10 player but it’s far and few between. His style also doesn’t help as he needs to be shooting all the time to play his game.

Guaranteed Rudy won’t play that way in Sac… New Coach, New Team, New Strategy.. The Kings already had 4 players that can score 20+. They need him for defense more than offense…. and he’s still an upgrade over what the Kings have had ( Salmons, Garcia, Caspi, Greene,).. and I don’t include Tyreke Evans because he’s a PG playing SF on poorly constructed rosters.

Rudy Gay should wear a tshirt that says “Analytics Be Damned”.

Those same standing ovations will turn into annoyed glances soon when they look up and see that Gay is shooting 10-31 and the Kings are losing by 15.

Gay is a volume scorer, which is a polite term for a high usage, low efficiency player. Sacramento fans will tire of him tossing up that 40% shot and ignoring DMC in the post. I predict boos before the end of this season.

Rudy’s career seems to be taking a Steve Francis type of turn. REALLY overhyped, then recognized for what he really is, then bounced around the league like a ping pong ball.

Ayo Mr. Helin…I’ve been critical of some of your posts but solely on a journalism-technique-type of level, I just read a great post of yours though, so on point….about Barkely & Dan….where did that stuff go though?

It’s still there. Headline was tweaked a little.

By “blogosphere” do you mean PBT? Because you’ve been shredding him at every opportunity this whole season

Same with almost every other blogger that comes on here. Give Rudy a break! I’m pulling for this Queens team, they are very interesting to me. They got a ton of pieces.

Every blogger everywhere. You’d be hard pressed to find any basketball pundit on the internet that’s a Rudy Gay fan.

Rudy is a black hole. Jonas never saw a pass inside all season. Will Cousins put up with that? Don’t think so. If they change the rules and put more balls on the court, it may work.
