Raptors trade Rudy Gay to Sacramento for multiple players

The Toronto Raptors are trading Rudy Gay to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for multiple players, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

Toronto began the season with the goal of making the playoffs, but it’s become clear after 18 games that even in the dismal Eastern Conference, that’s not going to happen with the players on the roster.

So, the Raptors chose to go in a different direction — one that will rid them of the albatross of a contract that Gay possessed, while giving them greater future flexibility to improve from a talent perspective.

The details are as follows:

On the Kings side, they’re not going to the playoffs either with a record of 5-13 that’s 14th out of 15 teams in the Western Conference. It’s a bit of a surprise that they’d include Greivis Vasquez in the deal, considering that he was just acquired this summer, has started all 18 games this season and leads the team in assists. But clearly, management believes Isaiah Thomas is ready to be the team’s starting point guard, and if they’re right he’ll do a similar job at less than half the price.

Gay’s contract includes a player option that will potentially pay him $19.3 million next season. But if he can play more efficiently in Sacramento, there’s at least the possibility that he could opt out of that final year to pursue a longer-term, multi-year deal next summer.

That has to be what the Kings are banking on by making this deal. It’s a strong move by the Raptors that will give them much more roster flexibility in the future; time will tell if the same can be said for the Kings.

Gay is averaging 19.4 points and a career-best 7.4 rebounds this season, but is shooting a career-worst 38.8 percent from the field in 35.5 minutes per contest.

Love my Uconn Huskie alumni; Rudy, Ray Allen, Kemba, Ben Gordon

    • djeg07 - Dec 8, 2013 at 9:15 PM

how about thabeet? he is a sure hall of famer!!

    • bigmizzax - Dec 8, 2013 at 9:20 PM

      …said nobody ever

    • hryanana - Dec 8, 2013 at 9:59 PM

RayRay and Kemba are awesome. Rudy is a joke, he’s great, but there are many players in the league that could hit his numbers if they were given the same green light to shoot that Rudy gets. He’s laughing all the way to the bank. 19.3…..joke.

  2. legend30 - Dec 8, 2013 at 7:47 PM

Masai Ujiri strikes again. I don’t understand this trade for the Kings. Rudy Gay has a $19.3 million player option for next year, this makes no sense for the Kings.

  3. kinggw - Dec 8, 2013 at 7:49 PM

If Toronto wasn’t tanking before, they surely are now.

    • JHathwell - Dec 8, 2013 at 8:14 PM

Says who? One could argue that this trade makes Toronto better. Rudy Gay was having a brutal season there.

    • av416 - Dec 8, 2013 at 10:45 PM

This was a genius move by Masai. I have actually watched most Raps games this year (Canada doesn’t get coverage of ANY other games) and there is no doubt Rudy was a HUGE detriment to the Raps success. Masai has made this team so much better in this deal, not only does he rid of the leagues most inefficient and over paid player, not only did he acquire a better true PG than Kyle Lowry which will allow him to move Lowry’s expiring deal (15 ppg 8 apg this year), he most importantly is allowing Demar to take this team over and see what kind of a piece he is going to be moving forward. Don’t sleep on my boy Jonas either, kids a beast and should be seeing more touches now.

      • cmehustle - Dec 8, 2013 at 11:14 PM

Wow, that was like the best Raps breakdown I have ever heard in my life!!

      • mayorrobford - Dec 9, 2013 at 2:38 PM

Canada gets TnT games like once a week. the Knicks Nets game was on last week. At least here on the East Coast we do.

  4. buffalo65 - Dec 8, 2013 at 7:51 PM

Not sure if this is the beginning of a Raptor tank job. They might be better without Gay. Can’t believe they unloaded him.

  5. jamesk2465 - Dec 8, 2013 at 7:54 PM

Kings won, they just freed up 17 mill in cap space. And if Rudy Gay doesn’t work out he can walk next summer or he can walk this summer if he ops out.

    • jamesk2465 - Dec 8, 2013 at 7:55 PM

Raptors are in the riggin for wiggins sweepstakes

      • ProBasketballPundit - Dec 8, 2013 at 7:57 PM

Except they’ll probably improve by having Rudy Gay off the floor.

      • philadelphiafan - Dec 8, 2013 at 8:13 PM

        *Parker

      • legend30 - Dec 8, 2013 at 8:28 PM

I think they improved, by trading Gay.

      • borderline1988 - Dec 8, 2013 at 9:47 PM

This team is better without Gay. The guy was shooting 38%; you have to believe you could distribute some of those shots amongst other more efficient players. If he was a fantastic defender or playmaker, then maybe it would be worth it.

And then did get back a good rotation player in Vasquez who provides a different style than Lowry.

  6. theworkhorsebackdotcom - Dec 8, 2013 at 7:56 PM

Can’t blame the Raps for not staying put. They get from under that huge contract. Not expecting any immediate returns, but change was a certain thing for this team.

On the other side Gay and Cousins….. Have fun Sacramento

  7. ProBasketballPundit - Dec 8, 2013 at 7:56 PM

We all knew this was coming the day Masai Ujiri took over. I’m surprised he didn’t get picks out of the deal too… but either way good job getting rid of Gay and his contract.

  8. ProBasketballPundit - Dec 8, 2013 at 7:58 PM

The real winner in this deal: stat sheets! They are officially unbanned from the Raptors locker room.

  9. m4a188 - Dec 8, 2013 at 8:00 PM

I wonder how long before stat sheets will be allowed into the locker room again, glad to see that chucker leave.

  10. elwaysagenius - Dec 8, 2013 at 8:05 PM

I wonder what other magic Masai has left

  11. JHathwell - Dec 8, 2013 at 8:08 PM

Masai Ujiri is smarter than you are. All of you.

    • kinggw - Dec 8, 2013 at 8:18 PM

I like him a lot, but it doesnt take a lot of smarts to trade your most expensive player when its clear your season isnt going anywhere. Even Ainge could’ve made this deal.

      • JHathwell - Dec 8, 2013 at 8:30 PM

You think teams were breaking down the door to pay rudy gay 18m this year (and likely 19m next year) to shot 38% and turn the ball over a bunch? Getting rid of Gay’s contract is a victory in itself, but Ujiri got a couple of useful players to boot.

If the idea is to replicate what he did in Denver by acquiring allot of solid talent, this is a good start.

      • asimonetti88 - Dec 8, 2013 at 8:50 PM

Convincing someone to take on Gay’s contract would not be an easy feat.

      • timberwolvesbrisin - Dec 8, 2013 at 9:07 PM

Uuuuh Danny Ainge? The guy that restored the celtics back to greatness?

      • limonadamas - Dec 8, 2013 at 9:13 PM

Umm… Ainge has done a great job with the rebuild so far. Found a great coach, dropped KG/Pierce at the right time, and has a lot of draft picks to play with.

      • naterich21 - Dec 9, 2013 at 2:50 AM

Their most expensive player is Wallace technically.

But I’m sure you meant that

      • redbaronx - Dec 9, 2013 at 1:00 PM

kinggw – It’s not just the fact that he got rid of Rudy Gay that makes this a genius move. See av416 post above for more insight. He did a very good breakdown of why this is a great move for the Raptors.

  12. buffalo65 - Dec 8, 2013 at 8:18 PM

Toronto likely improved with this deal. No tank job.

  13. DonKellyBaby - Dec 8, 2013 at 8:23 PM

Now all this franchise has to do is move out of Canada.

    St. Louis or Seattle!!!

    • atwatercrushesokoye - Dec 8, 2013 at 8:43 PM

As part of MLSE, They’ve got probably the richest owners in the NBA, who don’t mind if they lose money because they’re just a line on a balance sheet and the Leafs (who they’re tied to) rake in money hand over fist, add to that they provide content for the owner’s various channels.

Sorry but this team isn’t going anywhere.

    • mayorrobford - Dec 9, 2013 at 2:40 PM

2.25 Billion says the Raptors are going nowhere

  14. jamesk2465 - Dec 8, 2013 at 8:24 PM

There going to take Wiggins if they can. Just based of the soley fact that he’s from T.O. and he said he’d like to play there. The drop of between them 2 isn’t that big either it’s like ying and yang

  15. antistratfordian - Dec 8, 2013 at 8:35 PM

I guess keeping the stat sheets away from the team didn’t work out like he had hoped.

  16. bigmizzax - Dec 8, 2013 at 9:21 PM

WHY DO TEAMS KEEP TRADING FOR RUDY GAY??? smh

  17. Kevin S. - Dec 8, 2013 at 10:06 PM

Looks like Masai can in fact rip off teams besides the Knicks.

  18. detectivejimmymcnulty - Dec 8, 2013 at 10:27 PM

The real question is how many games until Rudy and Cousins square off? It’s amazing what a good NBA2K rating will do to a players perception because Rudy is really overrated.

  19. jbeagles23 - Dec 8, 2013 at 10:42 PM

He just chucks Getting him off the books is a win

  20. hahapapa - Dec 9, 2013 at 12:27 AM

Now send Jimmer to utah? Trade for Corbin.

    • kingcrusher - Dec 9, 2013 at 11:19 AM

Jimmer has gotten the shaft in Sacramento, but I’d hate to see him come to Utah. He needs to be on a team that can play to his strength, which would be putting up 15 ppg, and all would be the garbage shots that the stars passed off. He’d be another Paxson brother (great garbage men, not relied on to win, but could provide a spark when needed). Jimmer is fantastic shooter, but not a player that you can build a team around. He needs a true star to play behind, and then we’ll see him shine!

  21. pdub923 - Dec 9, 2013 at 1:36 AM

Who did Toronto drop to stay at 15 players?

  22. pistolpete0903 - Dec 9, 2013 at 4:31 AM

Don’t quite understand the logic from the King’s front office.
With an upcoming deep draft, they should have let the season play out (not saying they should have tanked). The word around the league on Rudy Gay doesn’t seem to be quite positive (I look at him as an inferior version of Iguadola….ofcourse Iggy plays good defense, Gay has much better offense).
The Kings need some good defense and more importantly ball handlers (maybe a Dragic or Bledsoe) on offense. The TO’s are absolutely killling them.

  23. muhangis - Dec 9, 2013 at 5:53 AM

The Raptors got nothing out of the deal except some salary cap $ space, but the deal is worth it for them. Kings are on the rise and could use Gay.

Far as Toronto drafting a guy, if they draft #1 I don’t believe that Wiggins will be the best player in the coming draft. I’m not sure if he’s even top 3, though probably top 5. Chiefly cause this is a VERY rich draft coming up!

  24. bils293 - Dec 9, 2013 at 9:38 AM

No wonder they got rid of him. How do you keep a player who openly supports Hitler?

    • redbaronx - Dec 9, 2013 at 1:03 PM

@bils293 – Where did you hear that about Hitler? Which player are you referring to?
