Bargnani blows by Garnett for dunk (VIDEO), later gets ejected for trash talking him

Dec 6, 2013, 11:12 AM EST

When the Knicks got Andrea Bargnani the sales pitch from the pro-Bargnani side was he could do things Steve Novak couldn’t — play some defense in the post and put the ball on the floor and blow by guys. Whether those skills are really worth $23 million over two years is now a moot question, the trade is done.

Bargnani showed off those skills when he blew by Kevin Garnett for an impressive dunk early in the Knicks win over the Nets win on Thursday night. Check it out above. It was an impressive play. Although, on the flip side of that it’s been hard to watch Garnett get old before our eyes this season. He is not moving in the same way at all.

Announcement: Pro Basketball Talk’s partner FanDuel is hosting a one-day $20,000 Fantasy Basketball league for Friday night’s games. It’s $10 to join and first prize is $3,000. Starts at 7pm ET on Friday. Here’s the FanDuel link.

Bargnani wasn’t done however. First he and Garnett got tangled up in one of those NBA “fights” and both of them got a technical for it.

Then in the fourth quarter after Bargnani hit a shot, he trashed talked KG back down the court, which struck most basketball fans as Karma coming back around but struck referee Joey Crawford as a step over the line so he tossed Bargnani from the game with his famed quick trigger.

That ejection earned a huge cheer for Bargnani from the Knicks faithful that dominated Barclay’s Center Thursday night, they loved the show of toughness. So did the Knicks bench. They need a lot more nights like this out of Bargnani to make it work, especially until Tyson Chandler gets back.

After the game KG said he didn’t understand what Bargnani said because he doesn’t speak Italian, but Bargs said he wasn’t speaking Italian to him. What we have here is a failure to communicate.

Wow. I’ve talked a lot of crap about Bargnani over the years… and I was right… but maybe I should focus on Garnett now. He’s awful. I guess in a way he did retire a Celtic.

Bargnani’s actually an elite defender at the rim according to the new player tracking stats. He can shoot, defend and is an ideal stretch 4 to play next to Chandler who is also a dominant defender.

They just need ball movement and discipline on rotations and they’re good once Chandler comes back.

Elite rim defenders (Dwight Howard, Tyson Chandler, Joakim Noah) tend to make up for a lot of mistakes their teammates make. That means their team’s defensive efficiency ranks at least top 10. The Knicks this year are 25th. The Raptors the last several years were 22nd, 14th, 30th, 30th, 22nd and so on. The Raptors defense has actually improved since Bargnani left. So let’s stop making absurd proclamations.

That’s what we’re doing now huh? Tossing guys for trash talking each other?! I swear you’d think this was a 12 and under girls rec. league! SMFH

The NBA, AND the NFL for that matter, need to get their nutz back.

Even though he got off to a horrid start Bargnani has actually played pretty well this year.

Bargnani has been damn good, although I wouldn’t expect anyone who only watches the Knicks when they’re on ESPN and TNT (i.e. 4 games thus far) to know. He’s been the only real bright spot, because Melo is still not shooting well (although he is playing well all-around), Felton can’t make an open shot to save his life, Shump finally shot well for once, JR finally shot well in a game for the first time all season, and Tim Hardaway can’t get enough consistent minutes, even though he has been very good when he’s played.

    Is this real life?

Come on people, it’s Bargnani, it’s not gonna last. He’ll probably get hurt next week. His body won’t be able to handle all this intensity …

Damn dude. KG, that’s rock bottom bro. Rock…bottom.
