Report: Knicks’ long-term plan is to keep ‘Melo then recruit Kevin Love

Nov 12, 2013, 6:13 PM EDT

Kevin Love, Corey Brewer AP

We at PBT danced around this a little earlier talking about how Minnesota is willing to make moves to win now in an effort to put a winner around Kevin Love so he will not leave.

It’s a long, long ways off, but in the summer of 2015 Love will be the premiere free agent. Thanks to the ineptitude of former GM David Kahn (who refused to offer Love a five-year max extension because he wanted to save the one long deal he has for his favorite Ricky Rubio, so Love pushed to get an opt-out after three years in a four-year deal) Love has the ability to and is expected to opt-out that summer.

The Knicks, who are off to a slow start this season with questions about their roster construction, have as priority No. 1 re-signing Carmelo Anthony this summer (which is likely but not a lock). How they keep him is telling him of their plans for Love, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

Almost assuredly, Love will exercise his early termination option in two years and take a strong look at where the free-agent landscape stands with the T’wolves. He could re-sign a longer, richer deal with Minnesota, or chase big-market platforms in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and perhaps elsewhere….

The suitors promise to be plentiful for Love in two years, which is why the Knicks are already brainstorming his pursuit, sources said. Between now and July free agency, the Love pursuit will be part of New York’s hard sell to Anthony. The Knicks are a mess now, but the mirage never changes: always a salvation on the way at the Garden, always a championship parade headed down the Canyon of Heroes.

While it’s too early to know how things will shake out, we do know Love will be very, very popular in a couple of summers.

Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak has said he expects the process of attracting the team’s next star to pair with Kobe Bryant — and take the torch from him — would take a few years. A lot of Lakers fans have their eyes on Love. The Chicago Bulls could lose Luol Deng this summer and by 2015 will have Carlos Boozer off the books. Derrick Rose will be there as the draw and with just a couple smart moves they could have the cap space to go after Love (and still have some talent on the roster). It is possible Dallas and other teams will be in the mix also.

Of course, if the Timberwolves are a potential contender (and they have a good core right now) it would be hard to walk away. Plus Minnesota can offer the largest contract out there.

Then of course don’t forget the Knicks, they are going to be at the forefront of this parade. At least that’s the dream they are selling right now.

The Knicks aren’t anything more than also-rans here. As long as Dolan runs the Knicks, nothing goos is going to happen.

  2. dom2424 - Nov 12, 2013 at 6:27 PM

Pacers let David west go and sign Kevin love, if they have the cab space.

  3. Mr. Wright 212 - Nov 12, 2013 at 6:33 PM

Can we just focus on now? This team ain’t going nowhere this year, next or in 2015 or 2016 until Dolan stops meddling and fixing what’s not broken. Every time the team is on a good path, he has to go and do something to screw everything up.

That would be a terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible decision from Kevin Love

    • jusdre313 - Nov 12, 2013 at 8:19 PM

opposed to staying on the Twolves???? i dont see why it would be terrible

      • milkman1989 - Nov 12, 2013 at 8:56 PM

To put it simply. Look at what the wolves did this off season and look at what the knicks did this offseason. Which teams owners/gm do you trust better? IS IT THE TEAM NOT ONLY SIGNING BARGNANI BUT PLAYING HIM AT CENTRE!!!! Besides the way K.Loves ballin’, he has better options than the knicks and unfortunately the wolves….

      • jusdre313 - Nov 12, 2013 at 9:38 PM

@Milkman im not saying NY is the best option, there are tons more and k.Love is a beast. Yeah Twolves might have made some moves THIS summer.. but lets not act like they didnt sit on their hands for years and not imporve the team. Hell they wouldnt even MAX out Love in the first place.

      • greatmiamisportsmind - Nov 12, 2013 at 11:03 PM

Love wasn’t MAXED out under a different GM/President. Flip Saunders has shown that he is capable of making good moves. Something the past 2 GM’s haven’t been able to do, except for a couple times in the last 24 years.

        “Centre.”

  5. antistratfordian - Nov 12, 2013 at 6:49 PM

Ha! So they basically want to add another Melo-type player? Someone should inform the Knicks of the First law of holes.

  6. sawick48 - Nov 12, 2013 at 6:50 PM

“reports” like this infuriate me. ITS A NON-STORY! in related news, my long term plan is to win the lottery and retire young on an island. preferably by 2015.

  7. northstarnic - Nov 12, 2013 at 6:55 PM

A-woj is a hack who happens to love spreading negative rumors about the wolves. Great job referencing this crap multiple times today, PBT. Maybe if you keep repeating it, it will become credible reporting.

    • therealhtj - Nov 12, 2013 at 8:19 PM

So cute – another Wolves fan who thinks he’s staying. Just precious.

      • greatmiamisportsmind - Nov 12, 2013 at 11:04 PM

I think he is gonna stay as well

  8. vi3tguy415 - Nov 12, 2013 at 7:04 PM

Love…if you see this and do go to either my Knicks or Lakers team, you WILL BE THE FIRST WHITE GUY THAT I WOULD BUY A JERSEY FOR.

  9. luisrivasbuttocks - Nov 12, 2013 at 8:40 PM

    Your Knicks? AND your Lakers?

    Greedy bastard.

  10. monkeyhateclean - Nov 12, 2013 at 9:40 PM

There aren’t enough rappers and hip-hoppers to lure any quality FAs to play in the diseased crime-ridden cesspool that is NYC or any of its filthy boroughs.

Love is going back home in 2015, and home is MOS DEF not Ookla, where he spent all of 2 years.

Love’s home is (and will be) the P-O-R. So it is written.

  11. homegrowntalentmn - Nov 13, 2013 at 12:17 AM

I agree! I’ll add to that. Why does every nba star have to team up/ recruit other stars. Seriously makes you look weak…melo, lebron, cp3 and dwight.

    • gofinsgoheatfloria - Nov 13, 2013 at 7:14 AM

“Why does every nba star have to team up/ recruit other stars?”

Because a track record in the NBA means more than a track record in college.

  12. maracineanu16 - Nov 13, 2013 at 1:36 AM

I would love to see this guy playing for the Bulls. That would be heck of a ballgame

  13. doorharp11 - Nov 13, 2013 at 6:48 AM

all you bottom feeding teams of the nba can keep wishing and making your ignorant thoughts. klove is not leaving after this contract he will pick up his options because this team has a chance to compete for years to come and he knows that. you fools havent even seen a game of the twolves so you wouldnt know what these twolves have to offer the nba fans. klove, kmartin, rubio, pekovic, brewer, and others like playing ball with one another. so keep dreaming you bottom feeding fans…

    • sportsfan18 - Nov 13, 2013 at 10:55 AM

      Love, yes
      Rubio, yes
      Pek, yes

Martin? no. good, very good player, underrated, but we’re talking about a few yrs from now. he isn’t a spring chicken and in a few yrs will really be on the downside of his career.

so Martin isn’t a thought in 2015 for Love to base any decision on, neither is Brewer

If Rubio can improve his shooting, he could be amazing.

i’m not saying Love will definitely leave, but they’ll need another piece and there is time to get another piece if they keep improving and make the playoffs as that will make them more attractive for someone else to go there. not all free agents want to go there of course, small, cold, snow when they could have many other NBA cities.

But it’s too soon to know anyway. Love, Rubio and Pek are a nice trio and with some success, playoffs this yr and next, well they might get another good player to join them.

if not, it’s either L.A. as Love really likes it out there or it’s the Bulls to play with Rose as they are friends

  14. benjamintko - Nov 13, 2013 at 2:51 PM

KD will leave OKC to join Harden in Houston. Westbrook and Kevin Love to Lakers.
