Bucks’ Larry Sanders has thumb surgery for injury from bar fight, out six weeks

Nov 11, 2013, 7:49 PM EDT

The bar fight that Bucks star Larry Sanders was in has become very costly. Very.

Monday he had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb suffered in that incident and he will now be out about six weeks, something the team announced.

Sanders got a new four-year, $44 million deal from the Bucks this summer, an extension of his rookie deal. They talked about him as a cornerstone defensive anchor for the team.

It hasn’t gone that way. Sanders had previously expressed his frustration at his limited minutes under new coach Larry Drew, but this certainly is not helping his cause. Zaza Pachulia was getting the minutes at the five but he is not 100 percent now — Sanders could have proved he deserved the run, but he’s not in a position to do it.

Sanders did apologize for his role in the incident.

“For everyone I let down, I’m going to get better, going to be better. I’m going to get better at this, on and off the court. I’m going to come back better. I just thank everyone for their concerns and being patient with me.”

He may yet turn out to be worth that contract, though the coach must not think so. Too bad they still have to pay him for the time he’ll be sitting after that poor decision.

They actually don’t. All contracts have all sorts of non-basketball injury clauses and I’m pretty sure getting hurt in a bar brawl is covered. Doubt they do anything thought because it’s the Bucks and they just made this dude the face of their franchise. A small fine would be the worst I’d expect.

When Vlad Radmonovic dislocated his shoulder snowboarding, the Lakers actually could’ve cut him (wish they had). They ended up fining him 500K which didn’t amount to the game paychecks on the games he missed.

Apparently this is what you do in the NBA – sign guys and pay them regardless of what they do.

Talk about a guy waiting until literally the minute the ink dries on his contract to start wildin’.

He’s had the rep as a loose cannon for years. It’s not a wonder that he does it even after getting paid.

Larry Sanders straight robbed the Bucks’. Ersan Ilyasova and Zaza Pachulia also said thanks.

    Senator Kohl: “NOOOO!!!”

Every Bucks fan on the planet :”YES!!! More ping-pong balls!!!”
