If you’re the New York Knicks, you should be in the championship business. This is one of the handful of big markets hat can land free agent superstars, it’s a place role players want to be. You can draw the talent, you need to be smart about it but you can bring in guys who can win.
Knicks new GM Steve Mills said essentially that to the New York Post before his team tipped off the season with a win Wednesday.
You want a “championship or bust” kind of mentality to a degree, but that also needs to be tempered with reality.
You can decide for yourself if what team owner James Dolan told staff, as reported by ESPNNewYork.com, is based in reality or is closer to the reality of a zombie apocalypse show.
In a recent meeting with the coaching staff and some team executives, Dolan said he believes the Knicks have enough talent to win a title and that he expects them to do so this season, league sources with knowledge of the owner’s message during the meeting confirmed.
“He told them he believes they have enough talent to win it all,” one source said, “and he expects it to happen this year.”
I expect Paulina Gretzky to show up at my house tonight trick-or-treating. You can expect whatever you want.

The Knicks are a good team — 54 wins last season, won the Atlantic Division and made it to the second round of the playoffs last season. But most prognosticators (including myself) think they are a step behind the Heat and improved Pacers and Bulls. I don’t think their defense is there, I think their offense based around ‘Melo is too easy to disrupt in the playoffs. Some Knicks die-hard fans will dispute this (check the comments) but these are the same fans that booed their big off-season acquisition Andrea Bargnani on opening night as they start to realize the reality of his game.
The bigger question is how do the Knicks get to the contender status.
They are essentially locked into this same roster next season (unless you think Amar’e Stoudemire or Bargnani are walking away from their last eight-figure paychecks), but they have made a focus of re-signing Carmelo Anthony. In 2015 they could have the cap room to go get someone to play with him, essentially pitting them in a star recruiting war with the Lakers and maybe the Mavericks and others (hard to say precisely what the landscape is in two years).
