Norris Cole’s crossover breaks Derrick Rose’s ankles

Oct 30, 2013, 11:11 AM EST

Welcome back to the NBA, Derrick Rose.

He looked rusty on this play, where Miami’s Norris Cole brings the ball up quickly, starts to move towards a Chris Andersen screen — Rose starts to anticipate the contact and Cole crosses him up and gets the wide-open jumper.

Rose says he wasn’t rusty, that he shot 4-of-15 because he was just missing shots. Okay, you can define that difference for yourself. Rose looked great in the preseason, but that was the preseason, the Heat are a long and athletic team that makes life difficult for penetrating guards because they have guys who can cut off angles, and when they did that to Rose he chose some rather poor shots. However you define it, we know Rose will have better games.

Not sure if Norris Cole has a better move in him.

Miami went on to win the game handily on the night they got their shiny new rings.

    ColeWorld!!!!!!!!!! Put em on skates!!!!!!!!!

  2. legend30 - Oct 30, 2013 at 11:22 AM

Cole World!! Cole dominated Rose all game… Rose “The Return” LMAO!

  3. eltrilliardo - Oct 30, 2013 at 11:31 AM

Are you kidding me with this?

Rose played terrible on defense, but this isn’t the play to highlight… Birdman was the one who broke his ankles, as is clearly seen in the replay.

Well, success though… You got my click and my response.

    Nice journalism.

      SOMEONE IS SALTY…

    • zeedoubleyou - Oct 30, 2013 at 11:44 AM

Rose got juked so far out of position on the crossover that he fell into Birdman’s leg. The screen had nothing to do with it.

    • chicitybulls - Oct 30, 2013 at 12:09 PM

I’m going to tell you and cg like I told someone in another post, you’re making sense and that’s not allowed. Anyone can see he tripped over birdman’s leg. Rose did play bad defense on that play but to make it seem like he got crossed and fell on his own is not using your eyes or seeing what you want to see. It is what it is. For all of their talk though I bet if Gar Forman called up Pat Riley and offered Rose straight up in a trade for cole they would wet their pants over excitement.

      • heat256 - Oct 30, 2013 at 2:27 PM

Hate to break it to you chief, but the crossover Cole did is exactly what put Rose in the position to get tangled up with Bird’s legs in the first place. If Rose hadn’t gotten faked so bad, he wouldn’t have shifted to the left when Cole made his crossover. It’s OK for your guy to look foolish on one play. It doesn’t define him or your team. Hell, there will be plenty of plays this year James, Wade or Bosh get fooled. So what. But acting like it didn’t happen just ain’t cool man.

      • chicitybulls - Oct 30, 2013 at 2:35 PM

I acknowledged in my comment that Rose did play bad defense by over anticipating Cole taking the pick by birdman, but to act like him falling to the ground because of Cole’s move alone and that birdman’s leg had nothing to do with it is disingenuous.

I by no means believe this one play is going to make or break the season any more than I think this one game will. It’s a long season and this is game 1 of 82. A lot of things will happen this season. When the playoffs roll around that’s what will make or break the season for everybody.

      • roachyxxx - Oct 31, 2013 at 7:55 AM

It wouldn’t be a straight up trade, though, it would be 40 players from the Heat to be named later.

  4. cg2424 - Oct 30, 2013 at 11:49 AM

I guess we’re going to ignore the fact that Rose fell when he tripped over Birdman not from Cole’s crossover because page views because media because journalism.

    • miamatt - Oct 30, 2013 at 12:01 PM

Rose did get his legs tangled with Bird, but only after he had lost his balance on Cole’s move and was awkwardly trying to get it back.

    • antistratfordian - Oct 30, 2013 at 2:25 PM

      Still got shook

      • spthegr8 - Oct 30, 2013 at 2:57 PM

He did get shook, but he was trying to hedge over the screen and tripped over birdmans feet. People are making a bigger deal of it than it should be. Just Sayin”!!!

      • antistratfordian - Oct 30, 2013 at 3:27 PM

The thing to remember here is that Rose has a responsibility to himself and to his fans to not put himself in that situation.

And if you look at the video closely you’ll see that Rose lost Cole because he was peeking at Birdman coming for the screen – he turned his head a little to the left and that’s when Cole was gone. Sayonara. The rest is GIF history.

      • roachyxxx - Oct 31, 2013 at 7:57 AM

Cole played well. How’d he do against the Sixers? LOL.

      • antistratfordian - Nov 3, 2013 at 5:54 PM

        Better than Rose against… everyone.

  5. asublimeday - Oct 30, 2013 at 11:51 AM

Looked terrible. If this is what he looks like now, I’d hate to see what he would’ve looked like when he was first healthy at the all star break last year.

Oh wait, I would’ve loved to see that.

  6. heavychevy15 - Oct 30, 2013 at 11:58 AM

Delusional Chicago fans trying to downplay Cole making Rose look dumb.

    • roachyxxx - Oct 31, 2013 at 7:58 AM

Geez, how afraid are the Heat fans of Chicago to make this many comments on one play?

  7. hildezero - Oct 30, 2013 at 12:17 PM

Damn. That was a great crossover.

  8. skinzfan21 - Oct 30, 2013 at 12:48 PM

I don’t know which is worse…… the fact that this is even a story, or the fact that Heat fans are overreacting to a play in which Rose over anticipated the screen then tripped over Anderson’s foot!

But I have a funny feeling these same fans will be calling Oden the best big man on his first dunk followed by a block that jumpstarts a fastbreak. Calm down…… there’s a lot of season left

    • doc305 - Oct 30, 2013 at 1:05 PM

Its almost as bad as Bulls fans scrambling to give a reason why Rose didn’t get crossed, but tripped instead. Rose bit hard on the screen and paid the price trying to get back into position, happens to the best of players. I personally enjoyed Coles play on the steal, where he positioned himself for the steal and finished at the rim over the defenders.. that is a replay I would watch over and over again. Truth is Miami’s PG are perfect for this team, super scrappy defenders, and can hit the open jays.. plus they can occasionally create their own shots. Cole has been in the league for two years, and has two rings to show for it!! Best part about it is that you can tell that he is not letting up, only wants to continue to get better.

      • redbaronx - Oct 30, 2013 at 1:41 PM

@doc305 – From the rest of NBA fans not in Miami or Chicago.

Really? Who cares??? People get crossed up all the time. It’s one play. Get over it! There’s no reason for Miami fans to brag about it, or for Chicago fans to defend Rose’s play. One play…one game.

      • doc305 - Oct 30, 2013 at 2:46 PM

@red….. thanks for reading my comment and agreeing it.

    • zeedoubleyou - Oct 30, 2013 at 1:06 PM

Over anticipated the screen? Check the video. Rose didn’t even know that Birdman was there until he was on top of him after the crossover.

  9. teabone413 - Oct 30, 2013 at 12:51 PM

    only helin would post this.

let’s get to real reporting and journalism.. that is if you can.

  10. jzone954 - Oct 30, 2013 at 12:55 PM

Yea Rose knocked into Birdmans foot, but Cole clearly put the move on him, it happens , it’s basketball, please stop making excuses , like yes Rose got the move put on him by Cole. End of story.
I can see where this is going to end up now with so many rushing to try to down
Play or make excuses on why Rose looked like he got shook out his shoes by Cole.

    • eltrilliardo - Oct 30, 2013 at 1:55 PM

      J-Zone… stick to hip hop.

  11. beach305 - Oct 30, 2013 at 1:44 PM

Rose is great, but he did get beat bad on that play. In fact all night he couldn’t stay in front of Cole or Chalmers when would dive in the lane.

  12. 00maltliquor - Oct 30, 2013 at 2:15 PM

Dang, Cole and Bird were conspiring to put Rose out for one more year with that one!

I seen it live, did any of you gasp for air when you saw Rose go down too? LOL

  13. antistratfordian - Oct 30, 2013 at 2:32 PM

Uh oh, now Rose has to deal with Norris Cole. He’s already been gettin’ #rekt by Chalmers for years.

  14. jzone954 - Oct 30, 2013 at 2:37 PM

Whenever it comes to the Heat it’s always “it’s just one play” or “it’s just one game”
No ones not realizing that, that being said A- Rose got the move out on him by Cole and B- the Heat blew out the Bulls in which most of you who aren’t heat fans were hoping other wise. Simple

  15. 1972wasalongtimeago - Oct 30, 2013 at 2:53 PM

Rose may or may not be a great basketball player, but that’s not what’s important. What is important is that he is amazing in advertisements, both television and print. So humble. So inspiring. He really does things the white, um, RIGHT way. He’s just so likeable. Unlike that other guy who just doesn’t get it.

    • beach305 - Oct 30, 2013 at 4:24 PM

Hard to call him humble when he says HE says that he is the best player in the NBA.

      Or when he said this

“I’ve got to be the only superstar in the league that’s going through what I’m going through right now,” he said,

      Yeah, real humble

      • 1972wasalongtimeago - Oct 30, 2013 at 4:55 PM

Dude. I was being sarcastic. Nobody thinks Rose is more full of crap than I do; unless of course you count the guy who scored Rose’s last SAT. He probably thinks Rose is more full of crap than I do.

    • antistratfordian - Oct 30, 2013 at 4:42 PM

      10/10 post.

  16. scalfor3 - Oct 30, 2013 at 3:04 PM

Cole made a nice move on Rose. Rose is still a much better player than Cole. That pretty much sum it up?

  17. pburghballin - Oct 30, 2013 at 3:12 PM

It’s really obvious guys. Bulls fan here, not from Chicago, and able to be completely unbias. Rose got crossed, mildly, got his leg caught up on Birdmans ankle and tripped, making it look like he got crossed much worse than he did.

    So to sum it up:

Did Rose get crossed? – YES, sorry Bulls fans

Was it some epic move that will go down in the annals of NBA history? NO, not by a long shot. Sorry Heat fans.

  18. rodge1 - Oct 30, 2013 at 5:52 PM

Rose was humble in every interview I saw him do UNTIL he won the MVP. He’s been pretty arrogant since. Just saying

  19. heatnation305 - Oct 31, 2013 at 1:53 AM

That was the BEST CROSSOVER THIS WHOLE SEASON!!!!!!!! …… another championship banner perhaps…. Rose is washed up

  20. universalseeder305 - Oct 31, 2013 at 1:37 PM

Cole Norris did outplay D-Rose but it’s only the first game and I doubt he’ll play this poorly again.
It was Nice to see the NBA hype machine fizzle out when it’s Chicago golden boy played like garbage.
