Bucks’ new court too slippery, preseason game vs. Raptors canceled midway through first quarter

The Bucks unveiled a new court design this offseason, one that gave a nod to the artistic look of the one at the old Mecca many years ago.

But the team may have focused too much on looks and not enough on functionality, at least initially.

The surface was deemed too slippery to play upon, and Friday night’s preseason game between the Bucks and the Raptors was canceled due to unsafe conditions midway through the first quarter.

From Doug Smith of the Toronto Star:

“It was terrible, I was really scared,” [DeMar DeRozan] said after the Raptors’ pre-season came to an unusual conclusion with their game against the Milwaukee Bucks abandoned after just over six minutes of the first quarter. …

The new court and the wax-like treatment was like an ice rink in some parts, with players slipping and sliding all over the place.

“We saw the players were having issues with traction,” officiating crew chief Danny Crawford told a pool reporter. “Then when we had a few guys go down, we figured we should have a conference. And both teams wanted not to continue the game.”

In what was the final preseason game for both teams, no harm done in calling it off if players couldn’t be guaranteed of a safe environment in which to play.

Milwaukee will have eight days to make it right, as they’ll host the Raptors in their home opener on Saturday, November 2.

Wow that sucks. I figured it had to do with an NHL team playing there, but apparently that’s not the case.

It does…this writer is to stupid to put in the fact that the ice rink was under the court tonight. The milwaukee admirals play there the AHL team.

Is hockey still a sport? Oh I forgot cuz it can’t make it onto the REAL networks anymore. Versus doesn’t count.

Is this the first time something of this nature ever happened? That’s kinda crazy too me. What happened to the paying customers and their refunds?

Fans in attendance got free tickets to a regular season game in November. Fans came out the winners here

    • saudishot - Oct 26, 2013 at 3:13 PM

They get to exchange their tickets for an equal ticket to any game in November.

    • raidmagic - Oct 26, 2013 at 10:16 PM

No, this happened a few years ago in Tampa for a Magic, Heat preseason game. They thought it was due to the ice under the floor but it turned out they used the wrong kind of wax on the floor. They refunded tickets as there wasn’t another game to defer to with the tickets.

Even in the oldest and most unattractive arena in the NBA modernized things can still have their mishaps.

I don’t know, the man is saying it’s the 2nd Bucks homecourt game. How did it change from game 1 to game 2? That’s quite confusing and I really don’t understand.
Anyway, good call on calling off a meaningless preseason game.

Yeah, I smell a rat. Namely a retired Senator named Kohl looking for a new Arena. Too bad this has beeb rebuilding since Ray, Sam, and Big Dog left.

I still don’t get how those 3 lost to Iverson with no help in 01. AI was insane that year.

Nothing a few dozen more coats of varnish can’t fix.

I’ve never seen so many ankle breakers in a single quarter before.

If the cold weather wasn’t enough, another reason to NEVER GO TO MILWAUKEE!
