Nick Young calls Clippers covering up Lakers championship banners at Staples Center ‘disrespectful’

Oct 20, 2013, 8:03 PM EDT

Lakers.com Lakers.com

We knew this was coming.

After the Clippers redecorated Staples Center by putting up large images of their own players over the space on the wall where all of the Lakers’ championship banners and retired jerseys reside, comments from the Lakers were to be expected.

But most, wisely, couldn’t care less about how the Clippers decorate the gym when the Lakers aren’t the designated home team. One of the Lakers’ newest players, however, seemed to take exception.

From Dave McMenamin of ESPN Los Angeles:

“He can do that?” Young said after Lakers practice Sunday, the team’s first since returning from China. “For real? That’s disrespectful. We got to talk to Doc. He can’t have that. We got to do something about that.”

The Clippers revealed their Staples Center redecoration at their preseason game Friday, as they plastered giant posters of players Chris Paul,Blake GriffinDeAndre JordanJamal CrawfordMatt BarnesJared Dudley and J.J. Redick over the Lakers’ 16 championship banners and 10 retired uniforms.

“That’s a lot of pull y’all are giving Doc,” Young continued, somewhat facetiously. “I think he shouldn’t come in and have so much pull like that. He’s got to earn his keep.”

When a reporter argued that Rivers’ championship resume from his time with the Boston Celtics should give the coach the credence to do so, Young retorted, “But he didn’t win no title in L.A. That’s where it’s at. Look at all these banners in here, you can’t shadow those up.”

Nick Young hasn’t yet won anything in his career, either.

Young’s Lakers pride is adorable, but the more tenured players have more perspective. The reality is that the Clippers should have done something like this a long time ago — short of winning banners themselves, the least they can do is make their home court a place all their own, without being constantly reminded of how far they have to go to become a historically well-respected NBA franchise.

Nick young knows he is Nick young right? Stfu and sit on the bench. A lot of talk for a career schmuck.

    • disappointedfan - Oct 21, 2013 at 1:31 PM

The only thing that’s adorable is writer Brett’s approach to disrespecting Nick Young. What has Nick won? Seriously bro, in an article that highlights 30 foot posters the likes of studs like JJ Redick, Matt Barnes? (definitely gonna increase his street cred now, might add a new tat now) and Jared Dudley, clearly we are talking about studs here. All of those guys are franchise castoffs from another city and haven’t won anything by themselves either. Sure, the Clippers need an identity within an arena that they share (and as the fans we do not know what they pay…to whom and what for the privilege to avoid the embarrassment of another cities wrath on their historical futility). They can’t have a mascot because they are based off of a SAILBOAT! A classy sailboat mind you, but a sailboat meant for San Diego. Seriously, if you are cheering for Barnes and Dudley with the thought in mind that they should trump West, Baylor, Johnson and Worthy, you’ve already have lost the marketing war my neighbor friends. What’s next, coverings over Chick, Kareem and Magic statues out front? Clippers=Always lame.

      • adamsjohn714 - Oct 22, 2013 at 4:03 AM

They could sail their SAILBOAT on all the lakes in Los Angeles. Duh.

  2. asimonetti88 - Oct 20, 2013 at 8:43 PM

“short of winning banners themselves, the least they can do is make their home court a place all their own”

If they want to make their home court a place of their own, they should consider moving into their own building instead of someone else’s. They could always go back to the Sports Arena, USC doesn’t play there anymore.

    • jeffreysig - Oct 20, 2013 at 11:22 PM

It’s not the Lakers’ arena either, it’s owned by AEG which is the LA Kings ownership group.

      • asimonetti88 - Oct 22, 2013 at 10:26 PM

You’re right, the only team AEG owns parts in is the LA Kings. We’ll just pretend they don’t own parts of the Lakers, Galaxy, Houston Dynamo and Sparks as well.

    • wkl21 - Oct 21, 2013 at 10:52 AM

and the Lakers could always go back to the recently renovated Forum.

      • redbaronx - Oct 21, 2013 at 11:50 AM

@wkl21 – I have to admit I still love the forum!

    • paleihe - Oct 21, 2013 at 11:30 AM

If that’s the case, the Lakers would have to move out also since Staples was built for the LA Kings.

      • Anoesis - Oct 21, 2013 at 1:46 PM

You’re delusional if you think Staples was built for the Kings alone. AEG had bought the Kings the year before and wanted a new home for them in the downtown area.

AEG wanted $70 million in concessions from L.A. Certain city council members were adamant that city tax funds not be spent on a new arena. AEG ended up footing the bill themselves, but without tenants other than just the Kings it wasn’t going to work financially.

When the Lakers agreed to come along it sealed the deal for Anschutz. Dr. Buss traded 25% ownership of the Lakers for a 25-year lease. The Clippers tagged along later.

The Kings and Lakers get priority on game dates. The Kings get Thursdays and Saturdays, the Lakers get Fridays and Sundays. The Clippers get the leftovers.

      • disappointedfan - Oct 21, 2013 at 1:50 PM

The funny thing is the Clippers could never get their own building. LA? Really? Chris Paul will age out before they can convince anyone to pass it on to taxpayer money. lol @ Clipper fan

      • paleihe - Oct 21, 2013 at 2:13 PM

My point was that the Lakers, just like the Clippers, are tenants.

      • paleihe - Oct 22, 2013 at 1:14 PM

It’s painfully obvious that readers of this site have no clue what “lease” means.

lease1 [lees] Show IPA noun, verb, leased, leas·ing.
        noun
        1.
        a contract renting land, buildings, etc., to another;

“When the Lakers agreed to come along it sealed the deal for Anschutz. Dr. Buss traded 25% ownership of the Lakers for a 25-year lease.”

  3. imakcds - Oct 20, 2013 at 8:44 PM

as long as they pay the rent on time, and don’t damage anything, then that is a renter’s rights….
as is the land lord’s right to Raise Their Rent!!

    • sportsguynyc - Oct 20, 2013 at 9:29 PM

what does that even mean? Did the Lakers buyout AEG for the rights to Staples?

  4. chrisstyles32 - Oct 20, 2013 at 8:46 PM

    haaaa stay in your lane.
be ready for next Tuesday when the clippers whoop that ass with ease.

  5. dondada10 - Oct 20, 2013 at 8:46 PM

Nick, Adam Morrison contributed to those titles more than you did. Be quiet.

    • adamsjohn714 - Oct 22, 2013 at 4:04 AM

I’d have to say that they contributed almost exactly the same amount.

  6. Anoesis - Oct 20, 2013 at 8:49 PM

Meh, not an issue for this Lakers fan. If they want to pay the labor to cover the banners up before every home game and take them down after, 41 times a year, go right ahead. It isn’t like the Clippers haven’t ever wasted money on stupid things in the past.

  7. fearthehoody - Oct 20, 2013 at 8:52 PM

    He sucks so who cares?

    • mytthor - Oct 22, 2013 at 12:54 AM

I think probably the reporter who asked him the question.

  8. gallmich09 - Oct 20, 2013 at 9:01 PM

This isn’t about wasting money. As the arena is shared by 2 teams of the same league, the Clippers organization have every right to do what they want during there home games. The covering the banners is not being disrespectful of the past Laker success and achievements. Lakers are just jealous presently over the changing of the guard, as the Clippers are the new #1 NBA team in Los Angeles. Let them put the arena in the manner they want to when it is there time and quit this childish bickering over something so small and stupid.

  9. marky77790650 - Oct 20, 2013 at 9:10 PM

I suggest that the Clippers move to Anaheim where the Ducks play. If you have to be so childish like Doc and cover up the Banners and retired jerseys at Staples where people go just to look up and see history then take your team somewhere else. The Pond would be the perfect place to start their own history. No one would care about the move….Not even the Clipper fans since they can then have their own fresh start.

  10. walterwhite1976 - Oct 20, 2013 at 9:15 PM

Who cares about the Lakers and their wishes. They Suck. I suggest they tread lightly…

    • asimonetti88 - Oct 20, 2013 at 9:18 PM

“Who cares about the Lakers and their wishes”

Clearly, you do, or else you wouldn’t have read the story and commented on it!

      • spthegr8 - Oct 21, 2013 at 1:12 PM

        @asimonetti88
        LMAO!!!! Pretty Much!!

  11. sportsguynyc - Oct 20, 2013 at 9:28 PM

Young is an idiot; Clips didn’t want him after one season. Lakers won’t after this one.

  12. dynamicninja - Oct 20, 2013 at 9:29 PM

how about the clippers use the banners as motivation?

You would never see the lakers cover up the clippers pacific division title banner.

    • Anoesis - Oct 21, 2013 at 1:05 AM

Quite right, since the Lakers don’t hang anything but championship banners. A Pacific Division banner to the Lakers is like those participation trophies kids get.

  13. walterwhite1976 - Oct 20, 2013 at 9:45 PM

Not a fan of the Lakers but I realize their past greatness, and also that they will SUCK this year. I also love that the Clippers have added fire to the rivalry. Should be fun watching Kobe go 1 on 5 vs Doc’s crew this year.

    • spthegr8 - Oct 21, 2013 at 1:22 PM

      @walter
It should be fun watching the clippers win 45-50 games this yr and get BOUNCED outta the 1st rd of the playoffs……….AGAIN!!!! New coach and a few new players, but it’s the SAME OLD clippers!! If last yr taught us anything, it’s that , even we ( the Lakers ) are @ our worst and the clippers are @ their BEST. They STILL didnt make it further than us in the post season. LLS!! Not hating, those are the FACTS!!

      • mydukietwinkles - Oct 22, 2013 at 1:17 AM

It is so funny hearing lakers fans say that last year was the worst season they had… when it was nothing but “we are going to win the championship with D12 and nash!” weeks before the season even started. That was not your worst season… and if you actually watched the clippers play and was actually informed about them maybe your so called “facts” would mean something but as it is you are just the typical lakers fan lol

  14. barrettzrun - Oct 20, 2013 at 10:01 PM

Clippers should try WINNING a championship before covering up Lakers championship banners. THEY PUT THOSE BANNERS UP THERE FOR A REASON you dumb jealous “haters.” Yeah. Clippers NEVER have, NEVER will. GO BACK TO SAN DIEGO.

  15. kingwithringz - Oct 20, 2013 at 10:12 PM

    Shut up Nick.

  16. basketballgod87 - Oct 20, 2013 at 10:21 PM

why our we talking about the lakers they going to be horrible

  17. 00maltliquor - Oct 20, 2013 at 10:26 PM

That’s right Nick!! Welcome home buddy!! Stir that pot babyyy!!

  18. Fantasy Football Consultant - Oct 20, 2013 at 10:26 PM

Problem is it shouldn’t be there home court.

  19. bryancsuf26 - Oct 20, 2013 at 10:29 PM

It’s allright Clippers,go ahead and cover up the Lakers Championships. We all know how much you guys are butt hurt over the fact they all belong to the lakers. It’s ok Clipper kids, lets pretend the Los Angeles Lakers Championships are not their by covering them up.Maybe you guys should move to another state because all those banners are won by the best Los Angeles Team in LA and theirs only room for 1 Los Angeles team.Go Los Angles Lakers!!

  20. fonefifty - Oct 20, 2013 at 10:39 PM

The Lakers and Clippers both moved into Staples Center in 1999, along with the Kings. None of these teams own the arena — they all rent space. It’s an awkward arrangement, but it makes sense that each team would do whatever necessary to make it look and feel like “home” during home games. No disrespect.

    • asimonetti88 - Oct 21, 2013 at 12:15 AM

The Lakers and Kings are owned by AEG, who just happens to also own and operate the Staples Center. The Clippers are owned by Donald Sterling, who has made a habit of saving money by playing in other team’s stadiums, whether it be Staples, USC’s Sports Arena, or even the Ducks’ Honda Center.

      • dunkmann - Oct 21, 2013 at 2:19 AM

I guess the landlord can kick the Clippers out if he doesn’t want them anymore. I presume the landlord enjoys the rent payments the Clippers send him..

      • fonefifty - Oct 21, 2013 at 3:15 AM

When did the Buss family sell the Lakers?

      • wkl21 - Oct 21, 2013 at 9:39 AM

        AEG doesn’t own the Lakers.

      • mydukietwinkles - Oct 21, 2013 at 10:42 AM

That is incorrect. Ownership implies holding over 50% of the lakers share which they do not have. AEG only hold about 30% stake in the lakers which makes sense seeing as they are the main money draw in la. But by no means was the the stadium built for or by the lakers and to say AEG “owns” the lakers is also wrong. They are tenants at staples, just like the clippers.

      • redbaronx - Oct 21, 2013 at 11:53 AM

asimonetti88 – I just love the misinformation you put up routinely. The Buss family is still the majority shareholder of the Lakers. Not AEG.

Considering that all of the teams that playing there are leasing the space, no one team has any claim on The Staples Center over the others.

      • fonefifty - Oct 21, 2013 at 12:15 PM

40 thumbs-up? It’s amazing that Laker fans don’t even know who owns their team.

      • asimonetti88 - Oct 21, 2013 at 1:46 PM

AEG owns around 30% (Anschutz holds 27% and Roski has about 3%) of the Lakers. If you don’t believe me, you can look at this recent Forbes article:

        http://www.forbes.com/sites/kurtbadenhausen/2013/02/18/lakers-jerry-buss-leaves-legacy-as-the-nbas-greatest-owner/

To say they do not “own” the Lakers is 100% false. There are multiple owners of the Lakers, including the Buss family, AEG and Patrick Soon-Shiong. The Buss family holds the largest stake, just over 60%.

      • mydukietwinkles - Oct 22, 2013 at 11:49 AM

@asimonetti ok so you just proved my point that AEG doesnt own the lakers lol i dont even have to read the article… you basically just told me what i told you verbatim

    • wkl21 - Oct 21, 2013 at 9:33 AM

AEG owns the Kings & Staples Center
(so I guess the Kings own the building).

      • asimonetti88 - Oct 22, 2013 at 10:31 PM

AEG owns parts of the Kings, they own parts of the Lakers, they own parts of the LA Galaxy, they own parts of the Houston Dynamo, they own parts of the LA Sparks and they own parts of countless minor league hockey and soccer teams.

In addition to the Staples Center, they own literally dozens of stadiums around the world.

They do not own JUST the Kings and Staples.

  21. vegetablemed - Oct 20, 2013 at 10:48 PM

If I was a reporter I would of said “And which one of those titles have you been apart of Nick Young?”

  22. dkphilly1122 - Oct 20, 2013 at 11:06 PM

He sucked with the 76ers and sucks just as much with the Lakers…..he needs to focus on his lack of game rather than covering banners. When they are the home team why should Lakers banners be exposed, regardless if it is technically the Lakers home building?? That would be flat out stupid with all Lakers stuff hanging around during a Clippers game, and I dislike both teams therefore bias.

    • asimonetti88 - Oct 21, 2013 at 12:48 AM

Are they gonna cover up the statues outside too? If it bothers them, then they can get busy winning their own banners.

      • Anoesis - Oct 21, 2013 at 1:06 AM

Maybe they should just get a vinyl wrap for the entire building so it looks like the Sports Arena.

  23. rumar1989 - Oct 21, 2013 at 1:17 AM

WalterWhite1976, Only a Laker hater like you would say that they suck and says Kobe will go 1on 5 this season. Whoever your team is probably or likely won’t win it.

  24. rumar1989 - Oct 21, 2013 at 1:20 AM

WalterWhite1976, Only a Laker hater like you would say that they suck and that Kobe will go 1 on 5 vs Clippers this season. Whoever your team is, likely won’t win it.

  25. banggbiskit - Oct 21, 2013 at 1:25 AM

Why would the Clippers need to show “Respect” to the Lakers? If you don’t like it Nick, go out and beat them, you have your chance opening night. Buckle up son.

    • asimonetti88 - Nov 29, 2013 at 4:00 PM

“If you don’t like it Nick, go out and beat them, you have your chance opening night”

      Mission accomplished.
