Paul Pierce commits the preseason hard foul against LeBron James (VIDEO)

Oct 18, 2013, 12:29 AM EDT

In case you were wondering if the Nets, now with Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett in the fold, would be taking on any portion of the Celtics’ past rivalry with the Miami Heat, we saw in Thursday’s preseason game in Brooklyn that the answer was a resounding “yes.”

In addition to the Nets making sure to come away with the 86-62 victory, Pierce let it be known early on that even though it was only the preseason, nothing would come easy for LeBron James if he had anything to say about it.

Midway through the first quarter, with LeBron getting out on a fast break, Pierce was back, and essentially made sure to body check James in the open floor before he could make his move to the basket.

It wasn’t a flagrant foul, and it wasn’t a dirty play. And sure, Pierce easily could have tried to legitimately defend the play, or half-heartedly reached in for the steal as LeBron drove around him and to the basket for an easy two points.

Instead, Pierce sent a message, however small, that there will be nothing easy against his new team — even in a meaningless preseason contest.

Damm Paul Pierce looks crazy weird in that BKN jersey. Gonna take some time to get used to.

Paul Pierce and KG are old news. They’re old as sh!t and LBJ already vanquished them 2 years when he dropped 45-15-5 on the Celtics.

No, the 45-15-5 game is old news. It happened two years ago. KG and Paul Pierce are still playing, today. They might be past their prime but they’re HOFers and you always have to respect that…

Is it OK to say that you are both kinda right?

Smh. Pierce, Pierce, Pierce… always frustrated about LeBron. The Bad Boys Pistons didn’t even do nonsense like this in the preseason!

But 1) James is used to this sort of physical play and 2) no other player has to put up with physicality like this except for maybe Dwight Howard from time to time – but Dwight never gets hammered or tackled on a fast break.

Well my only guess for the hard foul was not to join the Jason Terry I Got SHT On Club!

The “statement” is “I can’t guard you so this is all I can do”.

That is a hockey check or a line backer shrugging off a full back.

I think the league is a little crazy with the technical fouls….BUT that’s not a basketball play and can seriously hurt the average player, running at those speeds, no padding on wood floors!

That type of Non-Basketball play has to be grounds for a fine or suspension.

    Dirty Play!

Not even man. Pierce just stood his ground, he didn’t throw his shoulder into him or anything. LeBron is so much bigger and stronger, that barely even took him off his path.

      • miamatt - Oct 18, 2013 at 1:19 PM

Please. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it dirty, but Pierce clearly threw his upper body, forearms/elbows-first right into James’s chest. If Pierce had “stood his ground”, it would be a charge, and to say it “barely took [James] of his path” is just silly.
