Lakers’ Kaman, Sacre bought a cow. You can’t make this up.

Nobody knows for sure, but the phrase “going the whole hog” most likely comes from butchers back in the day when pork was king in America trying to convince people it was less expensive to buy an entire animal’s worth of meat not just pick the parts they wanted.

Now Lakers big men Chris Kaman and Robert Sacre have gone the whole cow.

Yes, that means exactly what you think it means. They teamed with Lakers conditioning coach Tim DiFrancesco to buy an entire cow… and not as a pet, as Dave McMenamin reports at ESPNLosAngeles.com.

DiFrancesco, who has picked up the nickname “Grass-Fed Tim” around the team because of his belief in the health benefits of eating grass-fed beef, came up with the idea after connecting with a farm that raises grass-fed cows down in San Diego.

Kaman is getting half, 200 pounds, while Sacre and DiFrancesco are getting a quarter, 100 pounds, each…

“I had to go to a Best Buy to go buy me a 15 cubic foot freezer,” said Sacre, who estimated that the freezer and the beef will end up costing him about $1,300 combined. “It’s, uh, it’s intense.”

Good luck getting Steve Nash to go in on this next time. Now, if you were buying a green tea leaf farm…

I’m a grass-fed beef fan but not just because it has not steroids or antibiotics — I buy it because it tastes better. However I purchase small amounts, not “I need a new freezer” levels of beef.

Does it help Sacre and Kaman stay healthier? They swear by it — but remember they are professional athletes paid to stay in shape.

“I dropped from six [percent body fat] to three,” said Sacre, who was a second-round pick with a nonguaranteed contract just trying to make the team when he started working with DiFrancesco. “I really find myself having more energy and really always feel healthier and haven’t been sick that much.”

    I don’t find this strange at all. My family did this all the time. It is a heck of a lot cheaper, and grass-fed is better tasting meat. Just because you make lots of money doesn’t mean you gotta be stupid with it.

        On the most basic level cows are designed by evolution to eat grasses. That’s why they’re called ruminants. Humans cannot digest grasses. Feeding cattle food we CAN digest is inefficient and contributes to famine. It takes 2,500 gallons of water, 12 pounds of grain, 35 pounds of topsoil and the energy equivalent of one gallon of gasoline to produce one pound of feedlot beef.

        Cows cannot easily digest grains and corn, which is their primary food in feedlots. Their digestive flora (various bacteria) are incompatible with such feed, therefore feedlots pump the cattle full of antibiotics, growth hormones, and other drugs to keep them from getting sick and to pack on the most pounds possible.

        You are a fool to claim grass-fed beef has no benefits, particularly in sustainability of the planet. And none of this addresses the simple fact that most people prefer the taste of grass-fed beef when correctly cooked, even those who raise corn-fed cows.

I can promise you that laws require farmers to steralize their clothing as well as required to change clothes entirely when going from building to building in their clean as can be feed lots.       And PS all these animals are only finished on corn. THey only corn for a short period. They all start on grass. You really don’t know anything about the industry and fall victim to lies.     That’s too much red meat. It doesn’t surprise me that Kaman is buying 200 pounds of cow though. If there was one guy who I’d guess is all about a steak, it would probably be Chris Kaman. I imagine that watching him eat can be an off-putting experience.

    There is an opinion that the phrase “going the whole hog” originated in the poem “Hypocrisy Detected” by William Cowper, 1782: Subsequently it appeared in newsprint in the The Commercial Advertiser in December 1827. The use of the phrase first became widespread during the United States presidential election of 1828.

    Is this supposed to be news? Chris Kamen bought 200 lbs of beef. Actually, that was a pretty small cow, if he is getting half a cow and it is only 200 lbs. That means the live weight of the cow was only about 675 lbs. Usually, cow(or more likely, steers) are in the 1000-1200 lbs range when butchered.
    But, getting back to buying cows, I was at a dairy cattle auction about 15 years ago, when a well known NFL player, I believe it was Walter Jones, was at the auction and actually purchased a real, live dairy cow. A top pedigreed one, for which he paid about $15,000. At the time, top pedigreed dairy cattle were considered good investments.

    It’s smart.

    I mean, to say he’s consuming “I need a new freezer levels” of beef is somewhat misleading, considering 1/2 cow of beef simply won’t fit in a typical freezer. Plus, it’s not like he’s eating it in one sitting. It will probably last him a year.

    We have, in the past also purchased beef this way for our family (granted, we have 4 children). It is convenient, economical, and we find the taste to be vastly improved over typical, store-bought beef.
