Dwight Howard records first blocked shot with Rockets (VIDEO)

Oct 6, 2013, 8:00 AM EDT

We could have brought you video of Dwight Howard scoring his first bucket as a member of the Houston Rockets, but considering his defensive impact will be far more important to the ultimate fortunes of his new franchise, a blocked shot seems much more appropriate.

It didn’t take long for Howard to make his presence felt in Houston’s preseason debut against the Pelicans. For some reason, Jrue Holiday either didn’t realize how close he was to Howard before releasing his shot in the paint, or he underestimated Howard’s ability to quickly get up in time to contest the shot.

Not the most intelligent decision by Holiday, but credit Howard for his quick reaction in elevating to ignite the break with his rejection.

Howard finished with 19 points and nine rebounds in 27 minutes of action.

Doesn’t Jeremy Lin have a left handed finish yet?

Wonder what it feels like to be able to block shots from 6’4″ NBA guards without having to jump more than about 2 inches off the ground.

That block is amazing for the complete lack of effort required on Howard’s part. Looks like he is playing against a child.

Dwight a punk for bailing on the LAL. How u figure? The lakers blow, kobe is old, he hogs the ball and shoots everytime. There is no depth on this team because of kobes monster contract. Dwight went to a better team and situation in hou. Its a fact that 90% of faker fans cant or wont accept. But they continue to trash howard for making the obvious choice to leave the fakers.

somebody please tell what a faker fan is. It makes no sense, it sounds so stupid, plus its old

uh, a lot of LAKER fabx never wanted DH in the first place. they were better off with Bynum and Odom

    • clevelandschronic2 - Oct 6, 2013 at 2:51 PM

Lmfao really now you wanna say laker fans wanted to keep Bynum. You gotta be fking joking. Your the same fans that has trashed Bynum the whole time he was in LA(doesnt work hard, injury prone etc). Then you trash my cavs for signing him as a FA(which im thrilled about). Laker fans are so hypocritical and delusional.

The Lakers won two championships with Bynum and Odom, and were the 7th seed with Howard. Personally, I’m glad to continue moving forward without any of them. Bynum’s injuries make it hard to count on him, Odom’s best days are behind him sadly, and Howard’s attitude just doesn’t mesh with the Lakers’ style.

“Howard’s attitude just doesn’t mesh with the Lakers’ style.”

Dwight’s attitude didn’t mesh with Kobe’s style, because they have similar wants and needs. If you’re going to have multiple alphas on the team, one of them has to take the high road or they’ll have to be separated. Dwight and Kobe wouldn’t budge. I thought Kobe should’ve done a D.Wade and acquiesced, but that’s not Kobe’s personality, so winning was not going to be in the cards with that group.

But if Kobe wasn’t on the Lakers Dwight would’ve been a perfect fit.

“But if Kobe wasn’t on the Lakers Dwight would’ve been a perfect fit.”

Disagree. Dwight doesn’t have the personality for LA, he seems like he’ll be more happy in Houston and probably enjoyed Orlando more.

“a lot of LAKER fabx” = about 4

This is news? And technically it’s not a recorde blocked shot since it’s preseason

  7. tombstone7 - Oct 6, 2013 at 3:03 PM

Dwight is a punk b/c he left Orlando to pursue a larger stage…he is wishy-washy & then whines abt being criticized. His bb IQ is low. If he is consistenly missing free throws @ the most needed times & doesn’t work to improve his game, like develop a 10ft jumper, what does that say abt his IQ? His leadership style is one that is a Pleaser…doesn’t want to own his mistakes….I & the NBA could care less abt Kobe and Dwight constant girl -infighting… Dwight nds to man-up…..did I leave anything out!? oh, and He’s a overpaid Dunkman! No rings in his future!

  8. scbaby2013 - Oct 6, 2013 at 5:08 PM

@ Cleveland, being a lakers fan is a lot more fun and appealing than being a loser cavs fan. Glad lebron left that dump and got rings in Miami. Just like ur Cleveland Indians, cavs stink and always will.

“Dwight Howard records his first blocked shot with the Rockets”

No, he doesn’t. Preseason doesn’t count in any stat books. ‘Records’ is the operative word here.

    • antistratfordian - Oct 6, 2013 at 7:42 PM

Well it’s right there in the box score – 1 block, 6-11, 19 points, 9 boards. This box score isn’t going anywhere. So it has been recorded.

  10. jgray30 - Oct 6, 2013 at 11:54 PM

@clevelandschronic….yea they may be, but what u saying don’t apply to me Cuz u never seen me say some bs like that. I never liked DH Cuz he has no offensive game. He can keep his 18 and 12. I’m not impressed. Especially when 90% of his 18 came from his 12 rebounds. I understand u a hater and all. I’m a Laker fan, and an even bigger fan of the sport. A true fan knows that DH is no one to build your team around. And people please stop talking about the finals. That team sucked, and so did every other team in the east. Rafor Alston was huge in getting them there also. If he was do great, wtf did Pau shut him down in the finals? lol but I’m delusional…

    • bougin89 - Oct 7, 2013 at 5:21 PM

Yep. Dwight Howards 20, 15, and 2.9 bpg had nothing to do with it. A true fan knows how he would suck defenses in which allowed their shooters to excel. He controlled the paint like crazy in those playoffs. He was extremely efficient in getting those 20 points too not just off of his rebounds as you put it.

  11. abxyer - Oct 7, 2013 at 7:47 AM

Really? I thought stats don’t count in pre-season. So NO, it’s NOT his first recorded blocked shot!
