Jalen Rose predicts Michael Jordan will come back for one game with Bobcats

Oct 3, 2013, 12:31 PM EDT

Romeo Void taught us to “never say never.” So in this case as far as I can go is NEVE-.

Grantland is doing a team by team video preview of all 30 NBA teams as we head into the season. Fun idea as they do it with Jalen Rose and Bill Simmons, two big parts of the ABC/ESPN NBA coverage.

When talking Bobcats, Rose throws out the prediction that Michael Jordan will come back and play one game for the team this season.

I don’t want to go down this ridiculous rabbit hole, but the first thing that has to happen is either Jordan has to sell (then buy back) his majority ownership of the team because the league has a rule against owners playing. Or, as Simmons suggests, they could get a one-game waiver from the league, which is simpler logistically but not likely to happen. Not likely is being kind here.

It would be the most raw, crass PR and marketing stunt ever — there is no value on the court to the Bobcats, this would only be about selling Adidas jerseys and Nike shoes. Nothing more. Casual Gen X NBA fans might eat it up, but that doesn’t make it right. Really, you should never do anything because Gen X might like it.

Anyway, to make my point, this is not happening. No way. But good on Jalen for making an interesting talking point.

Isn’t this the guy that guaranteed ” it’s a done deal” LBJ will be a Knick in 2010.

I thought ESPN had fired him.

I live in Charlotte always wanted to see MJ play live I would buy a ticket for sure

Grantland = ESPN… so is this another example of ESPN inventing a story just so they can report on it for a week like when Ron Jaworski said Colin Kaepernick could be the greatest QB ever?

let’s play along for a second. and not on the basketball side of things.

    the business side.

i wonder if it’d be a nationally televised game. i dont know if they have any, but if they did, jordan would probably choose one that isnt. the nba would advise him to choose a game where people would have to order league pass or nba tv to catch the game. more $.

Can you think of another reason ANYBODY would pay to go to a Bobcats game?

Better yet, can you think of any reason you’d want to watch a Bobcats game on television if not for this reason.

This is a marketing ploy and nothing more.

maybe they’re playing the Heat, Thunder, Clippers, Knicks and you want to see your favorite player. (obviously the clippers game would be a Byron Mullens tribute night).

Lol, they did better than the magic last year. That’s one way to gain a few more fans

I would be so excited to see him suit up. Bobcats vs. HEAT, Lakers, Bulls, all of those games would be interesting.

    Jalen still drinking huh

  8. asimonetti88 - Oct 3, 2013 at 3:17 PM

This won’t happen. But if it would, wouldn’t it make more sense for him to wait until next year, when they make the name change to the Hornets? Like Jalen said- he would get to sell that Jordan jersey… wouldn’t you want to sell the Jordan Hornets jersey rather than the outdated Bobcats jersey?

Would he have to leave the HoF then come back too?

I was hoping to see Bill Russell again.

Okay. I’ll take the bait. I bet 1000 Anchor Bar Wings he scores 50. But the opponent must be Da Bulls!

    • adamsjohn714 - Oct 4, 2013 at 12:29 AM

      I’ll bet 1,000,000 doll hairs he doesn’t score 25.
