Monta Ellis on bad shots: ‘"I’m gonna play Monta-ball"

Oct 1, 2013, 8:00 AM EDT

Monta Ellis

Monta Ellis and Brandon Jennings, the Bucks’ backcourt last season, took a lot of deserved flack for taking bad shots.

After being signed-and-traded to the Pistons, Jennings said he had to take many bad shots to bail out Milwaukee’s limited offensive players. Whether that was true or not, Jennings can make it look true by changing his shot selection in Detroit. It’s a real opportunity for a fresh start.

Ellis is taking a slightly different approach.

I’m not sure whether Monta-ball is:

1. A new sport

2. This guy

3. A style of playing basketball that includes fearless shooting (and I mean that as both a positive and negative) and strong aversion to defensive effort

Let’s go with No. 3, which is somehow the most reasonable of the three options.

Technically, Ellis is right. Because NBA players are analyzed by so many perspectives, they’ll all get criticized by someone somewhere.

But some analysts are obviously more informed than others, making Ellis’ excuse a copout.

One of those analysts, Rick Carlisle, will even have a say Ellis’ playing time, and I suspect Carlisle won’t be thrilled with an “everyone does it” defense of bad shots.

The Mavericks have a chance to make the playoffs this season with Ellis starting at shooting guard, but it’s very possible his bad shots hold them back. If he can somehow find the shooting restraint he used six and seven years ago when he first burst on the scene, Dallas’ road would get much easier.

Yes, Ellis would still get criticized by observers who love his volume scoring, and that would undoubtedly be frustrating for him. But those in the know, like Carlisle, would be praising him, and shouldn’t that count much more?

Arguably the best value signing off the entire of season… despite his flaws.

Let’s take a look at your comment again in a fe months when he’s shooting 32%. He’s a chucker. Always has been, and with this new quote, always will be. Carlisle’s going to lose all his hair this season. Ellis is worse than Mayo, trust me.

        1. Receive the ball

        2. Shoot a turnaround 720 no-look one handed fadeaway jumper with both eyes closed.

        3. Brick shot.

        4. Call for ball until they pass it to you.

        5. Repeat from step 1.

ummm, no. because of his flaws… which are glaring.

At times he’ll look like he is worth that contract but unfortunately most of the time he won’t.

@2016 Monta is a dope player, I let it be known. And pardon me but the Bucks suck. You think he wanted to be there….bad shots or not, when you get sent to milwaukee im sure you stop caring very much. Monta has never played on a team he can care about until now…I think he will excel……i know he will. mainly because he was droppin 6 dimes on a team that shot 6% as a team.

He can go off some nights when his shot if falling, but when it isn’t falling he shoots anyway. He can be a star at times and a bum on other nights, he is a good acquisition though, the guy can score.

you do know there aren’t infinite shot attempts to be had in each game? It stands to reason, at least to me, that each shot attempt has some actual value, and when you miss a lot, you’re limiting your team’s offensive effectiveness.

Or, more simply: MISS = BAD. MAKE = GOOD.

Very well said sir. There ARE only so many shots per game. Monta is terrible, so is Brandon Jennings.

Volume scorers aren’t worth the hassle.
