Following reports of cartilage damage that cause swelling in his knee, Chase Budinger had knee surgery on Monday and had his meniscus removed, the team reports. The surgery was done by Dr. James Andrews in Florida.
The team says Budinger is out indefinitely and with this surgery it is very likely he could miss the entire season. Remember last season, when Budinger had knee surgery he missed all but the final three weeks of the regular season. This time around there was no dramatic injury, rather just a lot of swelling as he started to ramp up activity before camp, then when the team did an MRI doctors found the cartilage damage that had to be dealt with.
Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman made it sound like this recovery may not take as long as the last one, speaking with the Timberwolves official site.
“I just felt so bad for [Budinger],” Adelman said. “He’s the type of player who can really add to what we do offensively. I feel bad for him, and I really don’t want it to become a trend. With last year it really became a trend. We really want to see him get back as quick as possible.”
The good news is the other key players on a Minnesota team snakebite by injuries last season — Kevin Love, Ricky Rubio, Kevin Martin and Nikola Pekovic — are still healthy. If they can stay that way this very well could be a playoff team in the West.
