Miami Heat take training camp to Bahamas next week

Sep 24, 2013, 1:14 PM EDT

The real question is are the Miami Heat getting to training camp aboard a Carnival Cruise ship?

After media day next week, the Miami Heat are taking their training camp to the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort in the Bahamas.

Yes, that is serious, the team announced it Tuesday.

Two seasons ago — the first season after LeBron James and Chris Bosh joined Dwyane Wade in Miami — the team conducted its training camp on a military base. That was largely to try and get some time alone for the team to bond, away from the prying eyes of intense media scrutiny.

There is certainly some of that here — get away and let the team bond in a place they will enjoy. Not a lot of media outlets will pay for their beat writer/television reporter to spend a week at a resort in the Bahamas (however, if NBC would like some fantastic first hand coverage of the Heat training camp, I will offer myself up to take on that heavy burden). More than just that, this is also a reward to the team.

Remember, Pat Riley used to take his Lakers teams to do training camp in Hawaii, for the same reasons of bonding and getting out of the routine. It worked pretty well for them. Plus, Heat owner Micky Arison — chairman of the board for Carnival Cruise Lines — has a few connections in the resort world. Atlantis has the facilities, remember they hosted a college tournament there last season that included eventual national champion Louisville.

We’ll see how this works for the Heat, but for a veteran team like this they will likely enjoy the getaway. Plus Chris Andersen can work on his tan.

This team got even better. D-wade got lighter for his knee issues, Chalmers will get better as he does every year, and we got the intriguing questions of how good Oden and Beasley will be. PLUS, we still got Chris Bosh.

All part of the plan to maintain the Miami Heat’s status as THE premier workplace in the NBA. Ray Allen said on multiple occasions that he has never had as much fun on a team as he did last year, and that was well before the final result was known. Don’t kid yourself, word gets around on the FA circuit and Miami has smartly leveraged their on and off court assets to promote a championship culture and a team that players want to be on.

3-peat they wont b dethroned with pieces added if oden give them 15-20 of paint time, and beasley given tha opp to win a ring………BOY!!!!!

The issue with Beasley was never really on the court. He is going to add a lot to this team as will Oden

    • asimonetti88 - Sep 24, 2013 at 3:05 PM

That’s a highly questionable statement. His point totals have decreased each of the last two seasons, while his field goal percentage has declined every year of his career.

The issue has never been his talent, definitely. But he’s had plenty of questions on the court.

Beg to differ. He is a terrible defender and the Heat are defense first minded. He either couldn’t learn or didn’t care the first time he was here in Miami. He is a shoot first offensive player. Very talented but an iso player. He either couldn’t learn or didn’t care, again. Unless he changes those two weaknesses he won’t make the opening day roster.

Looks like someone got into Beasley’s stash

      • leahcima1 - Sep 24, 2013 at 4:29 PM

Smells like the sewer spit up it’s lunch.

      • jimmymarlinsfan - Sep 24, 2013 at 11:10 PM

        You did? Nice!

      • cantonbound13 - Sep 25, 2013 at 1:11 PM

They should implement voice messaging on this site, so people can speak slowly to you.

      • jimmymarlinsfan - Sep 25, 2013 at 5:07 PM

Does speech come any slower than the written word? Did your Knicks have a nice, full summer of golf?

      • cantonbound13 - Sep 25, 2013 at 5:48 PM

Your team get their full dosage of PED’s? How about your 100 loss Marlins? Hahahaha!

      • leahcima1 - Sep 25, 2013 at 8:41 PM

jimmymarlinsfan didn’t your mother ever tell you not to take advantage of poor devils and get into a battle of wits with an unarmed man. Cantonjerk has never had a winner in his life so he gets his jollies being as big a jerk as he can be. Ask him how many World Series the Marlins have one and how many his team has won, then tell him to STFU.

      • cantonbound13 - Sep 26, 2013 at 10:39 AM

We can always depend on you to throw out a stupid comment. If you must know my team won 26 World Series Championships. They are the NY Yankeees, the greatest franchise in all of sports. This further proves that all you do is spew hate and nonsense.

This will be a tough year… much as the pacers , the bulls, and so on will he better per say, understand that the heat will be better then last year as well…..and that’s not good news for those who are dying to see them loose.

  6. norcal031 - Sep 24, 2013 at 1:55 PM

We’ll the owner of the team is a cruse line billionaire, and does own carnival cruise, so why not take the team there. He probably has 10 floors at the Atlantis Resort….

  7. norcal031 - Sep 24, 2013 at 1:56 PM

I just saw the headline and made a comment, then I read the article and it was exactly what I wrote…..

Sending an NBA team to training camp at a resort with a casino under the same roof? What can possibly go wrong?

    • leahcima1 - Sep 24, 2013 at 4:06 PM

With Pat Riley and Eric Spoelstra, – nothing. Don’t worry.

      • cantonbound13 - Sep 24, 2013 at 5:11 PM

Does your mommy know you’re on the computer again?

      • leahcima1 - Sep 24, 2013 at 5:38 PM

Wow. Talk about clever. You cantonjerk belong in the Hall of Fame of clever comebacks. Rarely have I heard such witty remarks.

      • jimeejohnson - Sep 24, 2013 at 8:31 PM

Only a pussy talks about somebody’s mother from the safety of their computer.

  9. cantonbound13 - Sep 24, 2013 at 4:14 PM

Too bad 1972, Leah & Jimmy can’t go to see them, damn no fly list!

    • leahcima1 - Sep 24, 2013 at 4:34 PM

Cantonjerk you’re getting more incoherent every time you come out of your sewer. What is you latest stupidity supposed to mean and who is Jimmy? Take your time. Don’t want you to blow your bald little head.

      • cantonbound13 - Sep 24, 2013 at 5:01 PM

Such anger issues. Don’t let jealousy get the best of you.

      • leahcima1 - Sep 24, 2013 at 5:47 PM

Cantonjerk I don’t think winning two out of the last two NBA championships is going to make one jealous of you. But this is a new season coming up in a month, so The Heat have to prove they are the best again. They can’t do it with their mouths. Have to do it on the floor. So we’ll see. I will admit you’re a winner if your NY Knicks win the NBA championship, but ’til then STFU, the Heat until next June are the reigning NBA Champions and your Knicks are not..

        Pearl Jam & a Heat fan? Yawn….

  10. hildezero - Sep 24, 2013 at 4:31 PM

I think LeBron was one of the few people involved in this idea, right? Hmm…

  11. kingwithringz - Sep 24, 2013 at 6:02 PM

Cantonbound13 is a troll. @Kurt Helin, block him please.

  12. legend30 - Sep 24, 2013 at 11:51 PM

cantonbound13, you’re city is cursed. Cleveland will always be cursed. Jim Brown is severely overrated. Who did he played against exactly? I like how you always comment about the Heat.
