Doc Rivers “very disappointed” Ainge lied about how he left Celtics

Sep 5, 2013, 1:25 PM EDT

Doc Rivers AP

“It’s not a place that I chose for him to go or a place that I wanted him to be.”

That was Celtics VP/GM/decision maker Danny Ainge at a press conference, talking about the departure of Doc Rivers from the Celtics. Since Rivers left Boston — and the Celtics got draft picks in compensation from the Clippers — there has been a battle of spin on how the exit went down.

Ainge has said they wanted to keep Rivers but that he wanted out, not wanting to be part of a rebuild. Rivers has said this was mutual and he had told Ainge he wanted to stay in Boston and it was Ainge who told him the deal was on and he was out.

Ainge made the above quote at a press conference, and here was Rivers’ response on WEEI Radio, as reported by A. Sherrod Blakely at CSNNE.com.

“I was very disappointed in that part of Danny’s press conference,” Rivers, now Senior Vice President of basketball operations and head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers, said on WEEI’s Dennis & Callahan show Thursday morning. “Other than that, I have no issue. Danny knows just like I know, that that’s not true.”

Rivers added, “there were two people in that room, Danny and I. Anyone else who has a comment about what went on, doesn’t really know because they weren’t in that room; and it was more than one day, it was several days. It was an agreement. I’ll put it like that.”

Like any breakup, how it exactly went down and why is a matter of personal perspective.

And like any breakup friends will end up taking sides. In this case, that includes Celtics fans, who really have no choice but to side with the organization because that is where their loyalties lie.

I can’t wait until the season starts, although I’m not sure this puts this soap opera completely behind us.

Can’t believe I have to keep posting this. Doc Rivers became a pathological liar during that whole process.

Old news in a dry NBA offseason. Nothing to see here. Move along.

  3. losanginsight - Sep 5, 2013 at 2:10 PM

Doc is the most over rated coach in the NBA. Donald will let him go after he fails to produce atleast a WC title in 3 years.

Didn’t KG say he wouldn’t leave Boston if he had any say in the matter?

    • redsghost - Sep 5, 2013 at 4:40 PM

No he didn’t. He said he’d waive his rights if Pierce was part of the package.

Garnett most definitely DID say that…

Here is a quote from an article earlier this summer…

“HOUSTON – The Boston Celtics can discuss a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers or any other NBA team all they want, but Kevin Garnett says it won’t matter. Asked Saturday if there was any circumstance or team that could entice him to give up his no-trade clause and leave Boston, Garnett said, “No.” ”

He said NO to ANY circumstance or team (uh, to me that includes Doc leaving and Paul leaving too, but obviously Garnett changed his mind).

Garnett also said the following and again I quote from an article…

” Publicly, at least, Garnett was pretty clear about his desire to stay in Boston.

“If it’s up to me,” Garnett said, “I will live and die green all day.”

He SAID, “if it’s up to me”

Well considering he had one of ONLY 4 no trade clauses in his contract in the entire NBA, it was obviously UP to him.

He said if it was up to him, and it was, that he’d remain in green…

You know what? You may find lots of good info via Google…

Here is a quote from Garnett:

“If it’s up to me,” Garnett said, “I will live and die green all day.”

I’d also like to point out that he had one of only 4 no trade clauses in his contract so it was most definitely up to him.

You’re right, he DID say that…

but people don’t care for the truth… or they don’t care for it when they simply don’t like it…

No matter what, Doc Rivers is the best coach in basketball.

    • tubal22 - Sep 5, 2013 at 7:01 PM

uhm… it’s not hard when you have KG + Paul Pierce + Ray Allen + Rajon Rondo.

Before KG and Ray Allen got to Boston, everyone wanted Doc gone.

      This was in 2005: http://proxy.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/060112

I’d imagine “the best coach in basketball” would have won more than one title with that roster….

Rivers gonna wear out his soap box early. too early. His nose is growing too.

  8. antistratfordian - Sep 6, 2013 at 3:11 AM

You can never tell who is lying between these two. Both of them are full of garbage. I do know that Doc Rivers is one heck of a liar. He’s good at it. Ask Ray Allen.

  9. drgums - Sep 6, 2013 at 6:27 AM

I am still and always will be a Celtic fan. I just never knew I would root for the Clippers in the west. Go get em Doc

  10. chicagofan - Sep 7, 2013 at 12:34 PM

I love Doc and agree that he is probably best coach in NBA. But he should have taken the high road on this and kept that to himself. He has nothing to gain in this and it is water under the bridge–move on.
