J.R. Smith is angry with Paul Pierce, apparently

Aug 31, 2013, 2:21 PM EDT

J.R. Smith, Paul Pierce

J.R. Smith has never been shy and, unsurprisingly, the New York Knicks swingman didn’t put his filter on before talking to Ian Begley about comments new Brooklyn Net Paul Pierce recently made.

Pierce recently said that the Nets will take over as New York’s team, but Smith isn’t so sure that’ll be the case as he reportedly described Pierce as “a bitter person just getting out of Boston.

“(Pierce) doesn’t really know what New York is all about,” Smith told Begley. “Just know that his words have consequences and he’s going to have to pay for them.”

Smith also added that he’s hoping he’ll be healthy enough to play in training camp after offseason knee injury, but that isn’t the end of Saturday’s Smith news.

The New York Knicks will have at least two Smiths on their training camp roster, apparently, because Begley also reports that Chris Smith will join his older brother J.R. when the Knicks begin preparing for the NBA’s regular season.

The younger Smith had an underwhelming college career at Louisville, but used his connections to play for the Knicks’ Summer League squad last season en route to five points per game and a training camp invite. The 24-year-old rookie was unable to make good on that attempt, however, due to a knee injury in October that was expected to keep him out from three to six months.

Chris Smith never ended up playing professional basketball last season, however, so he’ll be a 25-year-old rookie attempting to make his professional debut when the Knicks open up camp.

If you kids can’t play nice, I’m turning this car around right now!

1972 is a hell of a lot better than never, chief

      • homieshome - Sep 3, 2013 at 12:44 PM

        It’s 1970 & 73.

      • homieshome - Sep 3, 2013 at 12:47 PM

Unless he’s talking about another sport, Knicks were in the Finals in 72 and lost to the Lakers. But they’ve won titles since then so I dont have a clue who he means and dont feel like looking

It’s funny how J.Rs brother Chris Smith is on the training camp team. He’s not bad but I think there were better point guards in summer league. I like it though I think it’s good for the teams chemistry. J.Rs just doing his thing , he knows the knicks are one of the if not thee toughest team in the league so hes sticking up for his squad. And he’s right the Knicks are NYs bball team.

    • brickzflair - Sep 1, 2013 at 2:24 PM

He’s not bad? Yes he is…he’s horrendous…not even close to being a Nba player

    • homieshome - Sep 3, 2013 at 12:48 PM

Chris Smith is terrible. There’s no way he gets a chance here on the Knicks, i actually get mad at him for accepting OUR invitations lol. Seriously Chris, you’re not your brother, just do our team a favor and quit

I just know, Paul Pierce knows more about winning Championships. For whatever that is worth. Pierce will also not be broke 5 years after he retires either, so he knows more about money management.

    • cantonbound13 - Aug 31, 2013 at 5:11 PM

Only 1 ring makes him an expert? You’re probably right about the money management however.

      • jcmeyer10 - Aug 31, 2013 at 5:13 PM

One ring and one quarter away from two but yah, I’m feeling pretty confident about the money management aspect.

    • adamsjohn714 - Sep 2, 2013 at 2:06 AM

Nobody has any secret knowledge about winning rings. You need great players to win a ring. Pierce, nomatter how smart of experienced he is, won’t ring a ring without great players around him to make a great team.

really doubt paul pierce cares what some cokehead has to say about him.

    • 00maltliquor - Sep 1, 2013 at 2:40 AM

Those are some strong allegations, sir….

  5. flickflint - Aug 31, 2013 at 5:52 PM

Why do people hate J.R. so much? He’s an exciting player, I’d rather watch J.R. play more then anyone on the Celtics or Nets

    • phaden27 - Aug 31, 2013 at 5:56 PM

Probably because exciting has never translated to consistency for JR.

    • jcmeyer10 - Aug 31, 2013 at 6:44 PM

I had the misfortune of watching him play in Denver when I was in college. Yes JR CAN be fun to watch but over an 82 game season, you are yelling at the TV in anger because of him more than yelling at the TV out of joy.

      • homieshome - Sep 3, 2013 at 1:10 PM

That’s not true at all Jc but alright, we get your point, he isn’t 100% consistent. Still a HELLUVA player to have on the team, he has came in and kicked butt more times in regular season than i could count and he earned that 6th man of the year award

  6. peterjohnjoseph - Aug 31, 2013 at 5:54 PM

So let me get this straight. A guy thats actions almost got him traded, is going to tell Paul Pierce what New York is all about?

  7. avb530 - Aug 31, 2013 at 6:13 PM

Keep talking guys, I wana see blood in these games!

  9. bux1022 - Aug 31, 2013 at 8:10 PM

6th man if the year shut up haters. Paul Pierce is a Celtic as far as I’m concerned. He’ll have 2 maybe 3 lack luster years and retire a Celtic!! Point blank period!

    • phaden27 - Aug 31, 2013 at 11:22 PM

He looked like the six man of the bar hopping squad in the second round.

  10. isomerize - Aug 31, 2013 at 8:47 PM

Um, who is JR Smith again? I know who Paul Peirce is, first ballot HOFer, NBA champion, Celtics all-time leading scorer, but really, who is this Smith dude? Never heard of him.

  11. isomerize - Aug 31, 2013 at 8:49 PM

… and half the article is about his little brothers bad knee ???

  12. onlyavoice - Aug 31, 2013 at 9:26 PM

It’s Going To Be Great Watching 1st Year Coach Jason Kidd
Take The Nets Further In The Playoffs Than
    Wanna-Be Woody & The Knicks.

  13. 00maltliquor - Sep 1, 2013 at 2:44 AM

I love how this rivalry is marinating something lovely!

  14. im2gr84u2h8on - Sep 1, 2013 at 2:57 AM

When’s the last time the Knicks won a title?

    • brickzflair - Sep 1, 2013 at 2:26 PM

A long time ago…the nets though? Never

  15. dysraw1 - Sep 1, 2013 at 10:38 AM

the rivalry isn’t what was from back in the folks feel the need to hype it up some. i love to post about my beloved knickerbockers, but this is the same old same old

    • homieshome - Sep 3, 2013 at 12:56 PM

LOL you’re not a Knicks fan. Saying “same old knicks” tells me you only knew of them for the last 10 years which was the only bad 10 years we ever had. We were always a good team, and have made it to the Finals many many times, just havent won it since 73. its funny how people forget all the good years when you’ve been bad for a while, they start thinking you’ve always been this bad. WE ARE DUE. with or without you

  16. dysraw1 - Sep 4, 2013 at 10:25 AM

dude you got me all wrong.but to be clear when i say same old i mean trash talk.
