Kelly Olynyk, C.J. McCollum fare well in annual rookie survey

Kelly Olynyk

We already told you that when asked during the rookie photo shoot who their favorite player in the league was, the majority of incoming NBA players said Kobe Bryant.

But those rookies to be were asked a lot more, too — and it was the Celtics Kelly Olynyk and the Trail Blazers’ C.J. McCollum who scored high.

Historically the NBA rookies have been pretty hit and miss with their predictions in the annual survey, but there are some interesting insights this year in the survey results, which were posted by John Schuhmann over at NBA.com.

Asked who would be Rookie of the Year, Portland’s McCollum and Orlando’s Victor Oladipo tied for the top spot. Olynyk finished third while Utah’s Trey Burke finished fourth. (I predict Burke one, Oladipo two, I like McCollum but he will be playing behind Damian Lillard so is he going to get enough minutes to really win this?)

As for who would have the best career, Oladipo and Olynyk tied with McCollum third. The winner of the most athletic rookie was Tony Mitchell of Detroit in a landslide (47.2 percent).

Best playmaker went to Burke with 47 percent of the vote followed by Michael Carter-Williams of the Sixers. Best shooter went to Ben McLemore of Sacramento, followed by the Clippers Reggie Bullock, then tied for third was McCollum and Tony Snell of the Bulls.

Oladipo won best defender (which seems a good call), followed by a tie between Solomon Hill of the Pacers, Nerlens Noel of the Sixers (who shows up little on this survey) and Peyton Siva of the Pistons.

The Blazers said they were going to play McCollum at SG next to Lillard…. some more of the quality Kurt Helin analytic work that we’ve all come to love.

And play him at the point as well, he’s a combo guard. I’ve talked to him and the Blazers.

Yes. I’ve never had to Google the first pick in the draft before without the NHL being involved.

maybe its me, but i like Cody Zeller

I’m with you. Truthfully, I’m a Hoosier alum so take this with a grain of salt.

But as well as the Hooiers did with Oladipo and Zeller, that they didn’t do more was a shame…

I think both Zeller and Oladipo will have good careers…

Many rush to judgement early. Zeller is smart, works hard and he’s much more athletic than people realize even after the predraft combine when he did things others hadn’t done in 10 yrs for those were bigs.

I was more than happy when Olynyk fell to my Celtics. Got a lot of high hopes for him. He should have plenty of time to show his abilities this season as the Celts rebuild.

Archie Goodwin and Michael Carter Williams are still under the radar. Goodwin won’t win R.O.Y, but he should be a starter before he turns 21. Carter Williams has a shot at R.O.Y. If Wroten doesn’t take the spot, MCW will be a starting PG.

McCollum is one of the most down-to-earth guys ever. Disciplined and no character issues. He’ll keep improving his game every single season.
