TMZ report: Lamar Odom has had a drug problem for the last two years

Aug 24, 2013, 12:40 AM EST

Lamar Odom AP

We’ll begin this by stating the obvious, which is that Lamar Odom played in the NBA for the Clippers last season without incident, and has not failed a league-mandated drug test since 2001.

With that being said, we also cannot ignore the report that is out there.

TMZ, an organization that is admittedly more interested in Odom’s relationship with Khloe Kardashian than they are with his NBA career, is reporting that Odom’s “hardcore drug abuse” is the reason that the marriage between Odom and Kardashian is “in crisis.”

From TMZ’s report:

The marriage of Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom is in crisis, and TMZ has learned … the core reason is hardcore drug abuse.

Multiple sources familiar with the situation tell TMZ … Lamar has had a problem for 2 years. It got so bad, last August Khloe pressured Lamar to go to rehab. Lamar went to a facility in San Diego, but he was so resistant Khloe hired private investigators to secretly stand guard at the rehab place to make sure he didn’t leave. The P.I.s stood guard 24/7.

We’re told the situation has become dire. Sources tell us … within the last 2 days, the entire family staged an intervention, trying to convince Lamar to go back to rehab, but he wouldn’t have any of it.

These are obviously serious allegations, especially where Odom’s NBA career is concerned. But again, he hasn’t failed an NBA drug test, so no matter how credible the sources, it’s all just hearsay to a certain extent.

In case you’re curious, here’s how the league’s drug testing program is laid out, via Larry Coon’s CBA FAQ:

Testing falls into two categories: reasonable cause and random. Reasonable cause testing occurs when the league or players association provides the program’s independent expert with information about a player’s use, possession or distribution of prohibited substances, and the expert believes that reasonable cause exists to order testing. If reasonable cause is found to exist, the player can be tested without notice up to four times in a six week period. Players can be subjected to random testing up to four times during a season and up to two times during an offseason (offseason testing is conducted for SPEDs and diuretics only).

To summarize, players are tested up to six times per year, although the offseason tests are only looking for steroids, masking agents, or performance-enhancing drugs.

Odom is still a free agent, and these allegations may be the primary reason why if the teams that are interested are aware of these alleged issues. The Clippers were the team most recently reported as having interest.

The drug testing in professional sports is laughable. There is always and NBA or NFL player getting busted with weed. And it’s not because they just like riding around with it.

If those drug test were laughable you wouldnt hear about athletes getting caught all the time. TMZ is an entertainment show not a factual show. If you get your news from TMZ you are dumb anyway

  2. 2016olympics - Aug 24, 2013 at 10:55 AM

Clearly he isn’t taking ‘performance enhancing’ drugs…

  3. qlindsay - Aug 24, 2013 at 10:57 AM

@ onlyavoice Sorry but a Duke University study showed that surprisingly White people have a higher rate of illegal drug use than Blacks have, and Native Americans have the highest. Now go deal with your drug problem infested community.

    • 00maltliquor - Aug 24, 2013 at 1:32 PM

Maybe it was a study amongst Duke students. They only asked the 30 non-whites that were there.

    • badintent - Aug 26, 2013 at 3:07 AM

right on the Natives. They choke the ER with Drug ODs every night here.My friends work in the Hospital, tell me it the same ones every week, just different drugs

  4. qlindsay - Aug 24, 2013 at 11:26 AM

Black and Asian teens lowest illegal rate of illegal drug in the United States. White teens much higher.

The news is that blacks account for 13% of the population and studies have shown that almost 50% of Americans have admitted to trying weed at one point in their lives. Do the math.

That kind of goes against your generalized logic, doesn’t it? Bigoted clown.

You guys talking about selling or doing the drugs?

  6. miamatt - Aug 24, 2013 at 11:45 AM

I’d really like to know what is meant by “hardcore drug abuse”. Some people who never touched a drug in their life might describe smoking a joint that way. But that is a far cry from chronically using pills such as Xanax or kicking back with a bag of Heizenberg’s blue-crystal “classic coke”.

Also, rehab is absolutely one of the least effective means of helping an addict. Celebrity Rehab, on the other hand, is TV ratings gold. Why do I get the feeling this is all part of the script?

  7. joshm5683 - Aug 24, 2013 at 12:11 PM

I haven’t read all 48 comments, but “hardcore” drug use is a pretty broad statement. As far as testing goes, most of the hard drugs are out of your system in less than 48 hrs unless you’re doing an expensive hair test, which I doubt the NBA or any other professional sport does. I don’t think you can say “He’s passed every drug test he’s been given” because like people have said testing is a joke in the NBA and no normal test would uncover anything besides weed and possibly a high BAC if it was after a long weekend.

    • Kurt Helin - Aug 24, 2013 at 12:32 PM

The drug test would catch cocaine, heroin and other such drugs in a player’s system.

      • joshm5683 - Aug 24, 2013 at 2:40 PM

I’m not sure on heroin or other opiates, but speaking from a professional standpoint, unless they are testing specifically for certain drugs which is unlikely and not cost effective, things like coke exit the system extremely fast so they’d have to have tested him pretty much within a day of his last line. Thats why with the term “hard drugs” I wonder what they actually mean, because it is a pretty broad statement

maybe that’s why that dude is always mumbling,I can never understand a word he says

    • ranfan12 - Aug 24, 2013 at 5:08 PM

Lol, I heard him when he said he was a member of the Lakers during a clippers interview

  9. papacrick - Aug 24, 2013 at 1:11 PM

If this writer only knew that the most hardcore drugs only stay in your system for 72 hours max. Very easy to beat the tests when you’re not being tested everyday. That’s why probation tests it’s coke/heroin addicts at a minimum bi-weekly. 6 times a year is a joke to the hardcore addict
