LeBron’s police escort to concert reportedly under investigation

Aug 19, 2013, 1:58 PM EDT

If you know anything about local government and local government financing, you knew this was coming.

We showed you a couple days ago the police escort LeBron James got, going to down the wrong side of the road, to get to the Timberlake/Jay-Z concert at Sun Life Stadium (it’s below). As I noted in the post, that’s your Miami tax dollars at work — except the people who actually monitor those tax dollars don’t think police escorts for celebrities trying to get to a concert is a good use of those funds.

From TMZ, who of course was on this:

LeBron James has police departments all over South Florida throwing up their hands … disavowing any involvement with the police escort LBJ got to a concert — but TMZ has learned Miami-Dade PD is now officially investigating the matter….

While Miami-Dade initially denied involvement … an officer with the agency now tells us they are “investigating” because LBJ’s escort would’ve been a break from protocol.

We’re told dignitaries typically make a written request for a police escort before an event — and that didn’t happen with LBJ.

Police escorts are usually reserved for the president, women in labor and a handful of other instances. Occasionally by the time of the NBA finals a team bus will get one to get through the traffic to the arena, but those are all planned out in advance.

Somebody is going to get in trouble for this, and right now you can bet there are a lot of guys trying to cover their behinds to not get in trouble for this.

Does Miami-Dade PD realize that LeBron is The King?

    • legend30 - Aug 19, 2013 at 2:39 PM

Whoever is clicking the thumbs down is a LeBron hater. Let me ask you this would you rather see LeBron or Obama? I would pick LeBron. The King should be able to get anything they want. It’s not rocket science. #EarnedNotGiven

Congratulations, you just posted the dumbest 2 comments in the history of this site.

      • ProBasketballPundit - Aug 19, 2013 at 3:22 PM

canton, they aren’t the dumbest. The first one is a joke, play on the word ‘dignitaries’ from the article.

      • legend30 - Aug 19, 2013 at 3:48 PM

People still don’t realize when I’m being sarcastic..

      • legend30 - Aug 19, 2013 at 5:12 PM

cantonbound, you’re still mad that LeBron lefted Cleveland? Move on. No one wants to play for Cleveland in any sports. They are cursed and Kyrie Irving is next to leave. Everyone knows that you hate LeBron, I’m starting to get the impression that you’re Dan Gilbert. You have to take everything so seriously… People like you are basically a terrorist you don’t belong in America. You have no sense of humor. You should get a tattoo saying “Forever Alone.”

      • tcclark - Aug 19, 2013 at 9:44 PM

I’m gonna let the first one pass because I’m hoping it was a play on words, but words don’t even begin to describe the absurdity of the second one and it really has very little to do with Obama

    • fanofevilempire - Aug 19, 2013 at 5:05 PM

They should be happy he took his talents to Miami.

  2. fnc111 - Aug 19, 2013 at 2:17 PM

    Lynch him!!!!!!!! Nowwwww

  3. gmsalpha - Aug 19, 2013 at 2:23 PM

But wasn’t LBJ going to the hospital immediately after the concert to give birth to LBJr?

    • paleihe - Aug 19, 2013 at 2:53 PM

If that’s true, he should have skipped the concert.

    • adamsjohn714 - Aug 20, 2013 at 12:47 AM

He missed the birth of his second son when he was playing in his first finals. He said something like “I was there for the first one.”

  4. sfsugator - Aug 19, 2013 at 2:34 PM

I think its hilarious when you watch the video all the peasants in grid lock traffic, while LeBron is cruising in oncoming traffic not using a hands free device. classic. go lakers

  5. dls612 - Aug 19, 2013 at 2:42 PM

Its under investigation because someone at the top didn’t get their cut of the money!

  6. eagles512 - Aug 19, 2013 at 2:43 PM

    Good

  7. beach305 - Aug 19, 2013 at 3:07 PM

I’m not mad at Lebron, but at the departments that allow this crap to go on. This is not a once time incident. I’ve heard this done for many celebrities, county commissioners and law enforcement themselves when they are late for another off duty jobs or other non work related stuff.

    This has got to stop.

  8. jzone954 - Aug 19, 2013 at 3:19 PM

    Yawn….

  9. ohiogator - Aug 19, 2013 at 3:30 PM

Leboob had to tweet it. What a clown. That what you get Miami pd for doing your boy a solid.

  10. tannethrill - Aug 19, 2013 at 3:35 PM

They gave Lebron a police cruiser, his boy is driving.

  11. 00maltliquor - Aug 19, 2013 at 3:38 PM

Damn LBJ dry snitchin’ on instagram. That cop who did him a favor may now be out of work. LeBron better hook him up with some money/a good job to continue to support his family for posting this and getting him in trouble.

  12. shanelsweet - Aug 19, 2013 at 3:43 PM

A smart Miami politician would help folks realize that keeping dignitaries like LeBron happy living and/or working in Miami helps everybody in Miami. Isn’t that what local tax dollars supposed to do for local folks?

  13. reesesteel23 - Aug 19, 2013 at 3:52 PM

I’m not going to act perfect like everyone else on here……..If I was a cop, and Jordan asked for a ride, I would have done it in a heart-beat. Only thing I would have said is…..”please, no videos”

  14. reesesteel23 - Aug 19, 2013 at 3:54 PM

All these LAKER fans on here would have gave Kobe a ride and let him borrow their pistol.lol

    • asimonetti88 - Aug 19, 2013 at 3:58 PM

Kobe has a helicopter he doesn’t need a ride.

  15. 2bemoore43 - Aug 19, 2013 at 4:04 PM

3 rings shy of KB24 status & it shows…. KB24 wouldnt have dry snitched on someone doing him a solid. lil bron needs to act like hes been there before, & STFU (stfu is under rated)

    • adamsjohn714 - Aug 19, 2013 at 4:12 PM

I think we all know Kobe’s track record on snitching.

    • topdawg4ever - Aug 19, 2013 at 4:19 PM

Nobody would do Kobe a solid because nobody LIKES Kobe.

      • ranfan12 - Aug 19, 2013 at 7:11 PM

I suppose that’s why he has a statue in China

  16. jhop86 - Aug 19, 2013 at 4:44 PM

Legend I’m not a LBJ hater he’s the best in the game today but get everything he want if he had that attitude he’d pull a kobe

  17. seanb20124 - Aug 19, 2013 at 5:37 PM

He pays a lot of taxes in Florida, he deserves a perk or two

    • asimonetti88 - Aug 19, 2013 at 6:01 PM

      Florida has no income tax.

      • willdunk4donuts - Aug 19, 2013 at 7:32 PM

Florida does have a sales tax and property tax. So if LeBron has property in Florida (yep) and LeBron buys anything in Florida (yep) then he is paying his taxes.

Its a maximum $24 cost for an 8 block escort. Counting gas and officer wages. Such a travesty.

  18. tampajoey - Aug 19, 2013 at 6:43 PM

I guess Liberals, Democrats and Blacks only care when the “elite 1% er” is a white guy.

    • jimeejohnson - Aug 19, 2013 at 10:10 PM

You need a new tampon. The old one is making you whine like a loser.

      • tampajoey - Aug 19, 2013 at 10:17 PM

Go wipe off Jesse Jackson’s and Al Sharpton’s love jizz off your chin… it’s not a good look.

  19. 2bemoore43 - Aug 19, 2013 at 6:48 PM

@ the Laker Hater who claimed no one likes KB24: white girls in Colorado & ALL of China love KB24…. stats dont lie… check jersey/shoe sales

  20. jzone954 - Aug 19, 2013 at 6:56 PM

    Again, yawn…..

  21. willdunk4donuts - Aug 19, 2013 at 7:28 PM

“As I noted in the post, that’s your Miami tax dollars at work.” – Kurt Helin

The Police escort went a whole 8 blocks. So 8 blocks round trip …. how much gas is that? 1 gallon at the most, especially on a Police cruiser, which are pretty fuel efficient. So let’s say there were two or even three (unlikely) Police cruisers involved. That’s $12 in gas.

Now let’s talk about the cop’s salary. That escort is 10 minutes of their time. So if three cops each get paid about $25 an hour, that’s about $4 per cop. That’s another $12. So we’re talking about $24 friggin tax dollars. Wow!! All that tax payer money!! Somebody call the FBI and the IRS…

Those cops were likely stationed at the concert, so its not like they were taken off of a patrol. They left to get LeBron because Jay Z wasn’t going to start the concert without him.

What this comes down to is there are some people who get upset over stupid things, because it gives their life some sort of meaning. Most of these people commenting are not from Miami or Florida. This has zero actual effect on them or their lives.

    • Kurt Helin - Aug 20, 2013 at 7:24 PM

Did those officers have other responsibilities they left to do this, or were they just extra guys hanging around with nothing to do? Either way I would call that a waste. The point isn’t the amount — if I’m late to a concert do I get an escort? Should celebrity really come with all those perks?

  22. anarchopurplism - Aug 19, 2013 at 8:11 PM

    Me me me

He can’t just enjoy an escort……he feels compelled to brag about it.

Pointing out obvious narcissism isn’t “hate.”

  23. steelers33 - Aug 20, 2013 at 2:26 AM

I guess you can say Lebron brings a boast to the local economy with the success of the heat, so it would really be like he was paying for it himself.

  24. thatguy517 - Aug 20, 2013 at 12:14 PM

It said in a different article that Jay Z was refusing to start the concert until LeBron got there so the police felt it was in everyone’s best interest that they got him there as soon as possible.

  25. billy38201 - Aug 20, 2013 at 5:32 PM

I have no problem with the cops giving him special treatment. He personally generates hundreds of millions of dollars to the Miami and Florida economy. Much of that in tax dollars that heps the community, pays for schools and even law enforcement salary. If he left town we would lose that, so there’s no harm in giving him a little special treatment. It was unwise to post the video, but in a way that could be seen as gratitude to the city for doing something nice to the man that has provided so much to the town……I am sure all of you criticizing him also contribute hundreds of millions to your local economy and never do anything unwise!
