Kobe Bryant’s latest Nike spot for China: 4AM Summer Nights (VIDEO)

Aug 11, 2013, 12:30 PM EDT

Kobe Bryant spent part of this summer in China on a tour for Nike Basketball, and while he couldn’t actively participate in clinics as he continues to recover from the Achilles surgery he had a few months back, he did spend some time coaching some young players and trying to impress upon them what it takes to separate yourself from the competition.

It starts at 4:00 in the morning, and finishes with Bryant explaining to the players the need to not only practice, but to be mentally present while doing so.

Forget Phil Jackson – that guy right there needs to coach the Lakers.

And if they don’t want him, I’ll take him on my Spurs when Popovich retires in the next couple of years.

Mental focus. Precision. How much your mind is present during practice. Sharp angles, sharp movements. This is what our coaches should be teaching, and what we rarely see on the court.

This is amazing Kobe – why haven’t we seen this from him before? Suddenly, I totally respect the guy.

“This is amazing Kobe – why haven’t we seen this from him before?”

I’m going to go ahead and assume because you haven’t been paying attention. Kobe doesn’t miss many games, but when he does, this is exactly what he does.

He was coaching the Lakers last year. It was a disaster.

“all my moves are sharp” – kobe

KB puts in the work…that’s why he can still run with the young guns at his age and still be considered a superstar. pretty hard for a guard to do.
