Dwyane Wade, his children on magazine cover as Trayvon Martin

Aug 7, 2013, 9:23 AM EDT

Dwyane Wade has spoken out about the Trayvon Martin case before, he even had written “RIP Trayvon” on his shoes during a game at one point. But he and his two sons took it to the next level posing for the cover of Ebony Magazine this month.

Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old African-American, was shot and killed walking back to the house where he was staying in Stanford, Florida. Martin was confronted by neighborhood watch coordinator George Zimmerman (despite police telling him to stay in his car), a struggle followed and Zimmerman shot and killed Martin. The case has drawn national coverage and focused attention on race relations and the “stand your ground” laws, which in Florida allowed Zimmerman to be found not guilty of any wrongdoing.

Wade’s image is a powerful statement.

I’d love for things like this to be a stepping off point to a thoughtful conversation about race in America, but I fear that conversation is drowned out by the loudest voices trying to make themselves heard and be the story.
