Michael Beasley arrested on possession of marijuana charges

Aug 6, 2013, 2:18 PM EDT

Michael Beasley

Michael Beasley once told David Kahn that his days of smoking marijuana were in the past. They were apparently in the future too, though, because the Phoenix Suns forward was arrested early Tuesday morning after a Scottsdale police officer smelled marijuana after stopping the former No. 2 pick for a traffic violation.

Beasley has had his fair share of public issues with the drug, but he’s pretty much been able to stay out of trouble — and out of the limelight — over the past few seasons (save for when he got his car impounded after speeding). That doesn’t make Tuesday’s news anymore surprising, though, and will likely lead to further scrutiny for the former Kansas State product.

An abundance of details aren’t necessary when it comes to this sort of case, but the Scottsdale Police Department decided to post them on their website anyway with a headline titled “High Profile Arrest.”

On 08/06/13 at 1:15 am SPD made a stop for a traffic violation in the area of Scottsdale and McCormick Roads. As the officer approached the vehicle he could smell marijuana emanating from within the car. A search of the driver’s area recovered marijuana that was impounded. The driver, identified as Michael Beasley, was booked pending charges for possession of marijuana and released.

It’s unfortunate that a player once considered to have so much potential has continued to struggle with this problem, especially considering he’s no longer as productive as he once was — despite being a five-year pro that’s just slightly older than the college seniors drafted earlier this summer. The 24-year-old averaged a career-low 20 minutes during his first season with the Suns while also putting career-lows in the scoring (10.1), rebounding (3.8) and field-goal percentage (40.5) departments.

Man…what a waste. This kid was one of the best college players I’ve ever seen. He completely dominated.

    • spthegr8 - Aug 6, 2013 at 4:30 PM

^^^^^ He definitely wasted his talent but he won’t waste ANY of that Bag!!!! It’s not his fault anyway. Those Gremlins he was talkin about peer pressured him into it. DAMN Gremlins!!!

    • brainsmasher - Aug 7, 2013 at 6:27 AM

Damn…I haven’t anybody dominate in college like Beasley since Larry Bird and Xavier McDaniel. I’ve even seen Beasley drop 45 in the pros like it was nothing.

    Michael Bluntsley.

Okay Mikey, this is getting real old….

  4. heat256 - Aug 6, 2013 at 2:38 PM

He’s got some wicked glaucoma issues.

  5. armstrongsmissingball - Aug 6, 2013 at 2:42 PM

Trade him to Denver and be done with it.

  6. florida727 - Aug 6, 2013 at 2:46 PM

The NBA has a way of weeding out the players it doesn’t… oh heck, even I can’t go on with that :)

  7. edwardemanuelson - Aug 6, 2013 at 2:49 PM

    Spurs please make a call.

Not like the Suns would ever help us anyway.

    • dopekidz83 - Aug 6, 2013 at 2:53 PM

Be careful what you wish for cause the Suns would love to dump his contract into somebody else’s lap.

      • edwardemanuelson - Aug 6, 2013 at 3:04 PM

By chance, do you happen to know what’s left on his contract?

Perhaps, a trade can be worked out.

      • dopekidz83 - Aug 6, 2013 at 3:31 PM

He’s got 2 years left on his current contract at 6mil per year.

      • adamsjohn714 - Aug 6, 2013 at 4:03 PM

unfortunately for the Suns, the Spurs aren’t really in the habit of making ridiculously stupid moves. The Suns should try to leverage this situation into voiding his contract.

    • spursareold - Aug 6, 2013 at 5:02 PM

Spurs would never touch him. Not only is he a burner off the court, he’s a low percentage volume shooter on the court.

    • biasedhomer - Aug 6, 2013 at 6:19 PM

Only way Spurs would trade for him is if he was an expiring contract or the Suns take back a bad contract, but the Spurs don’t really have bad contracts.

  8. hildezero - Aug 6, 2013 at 3:21 PM

Do you really want him in your team?

  9. bullsfannotabudman - Aug 6, 2013 at 3:28 PM

and to think some allegedly knowledgeable b-ball people thought the Bulls should draft this clown instead of DRose!

    • dondada10 - Aug 6, 2013 at 4:31 PM

That would almost be as bad as Oden over Durant.

      • bellerophon30 - Aug 6, 2013 at 5:32 PM

It’d be worse. At least Oden is a good guy.

  10. skinsfanwill - Aug 6, 2013 at 3:32 PM

No wonder he looks like he doesn’t give a zhit on the court. And plays like it too. if you can’t get off the Phoenix bench and average a decent number then you are basically a bum. I’m just happy Miami saw he was a bust early out.

  11. htownred34 - Aug 6, 2013 at 3:33 PM

    Come on now again?

  12. rumbabeats - Aug 6, 2013 at 3:39 PM

B-easy might be the biggest pothead in league

  13. tannethrill - Aug 6, 2013 at 3:48 PM

The only thing that surprises me is that Pat Riley drafted the guy in the first place. Would have been interesting if Miami had landed Rose instead.

    • heat256 - Aug 6, 2013 at 4:17 PM

Or Westbrook. Or Love. But they got the turd sammich by getting the #2 pick and nearly setting the franchise back into a smoke filled haze with Eazy Beasley.

  14. mickdamill - Aug 6, 2013 at 4:22 PM

“I don’t smoke weed no more….. and I aint smokin no less,”

This guy is a total clown, his decision making off the court is about as good as his decision making on the court.

    • ProBasketballPundit - Aug 6, 2013 at 6:21 PM

Holy crap, nice reference mickdamill. I love 20/20 but I would never have caught that reference. Time to break out the iPod.

  15. dondada10 - Aug 6, 2013 at 4:32 PM

My top 5 list of who I would like to smoke weed with, dead or alive:

    1. Kurt Cobain
    2. J.D. Salinger
    3. Joe Namath
    4. Michael Beasely
    5. Pat Riley

  16. hildezero - Aug 6, 2013 at 4:34 PM

Is that… “Back Again” – Dilated Peoples

    • mickdamill - Aug 6, 2013 at 4:51 PM

      Sure is lol

  17. spursareold - Aug 6, 2013 at 5:04 PM

I think the funniest thing to be seen in the summer of 2015 will be Michael Beasley trying to get a job for more than a minimum deal.

  18. biggestredmiami - Aug 6, 2013 at 6:17 PM

    Needs to be legalized.

    • ProBasketballPundit - Aug 6, 2013 at 6:23 PM

Yes, there’s literally no rational reason for it to be illegal but that doesn’t mean it’s not damn stupid to get caught with it. I know tons of people who smoke and none of them have ever been busted with it.

      • antistratfordian - Aug 6, 2013 at 8:18 PM

Well the people you know are probably not young black men driving $200,000 cars in Snobsdale… so they’re not at risk to get pulled over nearly as often.

That being said, Beasley should be aware of what I am implying and be more careful.

  19. hildezero - Aug 6, 2013 at 6:38 PM

The Alchemist is a sick@$$ producer. The beat for Back Again is a classic legit hip-hop beat.

  20. mikeystyles - Aug 6, 2013 at 7:54 PM

Michael Beasley’s Career so far = Up In Smoke!! Lol Just Sayin’

  21. stayhigh_247 - Aug 6, 2013 at 9:03 PM

Dam i’m glad the Bulls passed on this dude, what a way to squander a once in a lifetime opportunity.Think of all the very good players that never made it to the league and this dumbass wontt take it serious.

  22. saintlaron - Aug 7, 2013 at 2:13 AM

So. He smokes weed, just like most people. Not my $$$ = idgaf

  23. yunkerimages - Aug 7, 2013 at 7:03 AM

    DWS – Driving While Stupid

    • 22yearsagotoday - Aug 7, 2013 at 2:27 PM

Exactly, especially if he’s on a short, local trip. Why use a smelly substance like cannabis in a public place. Rich and stupid seem to go together when it comes to athletes.
