5’10” guy does between-the-legs dunk over Blake Griffin (VIDEO)

Aug 5, 2013, 4:48 PM EDT

I started arguing for this a little last season and I’m going to stick with it — if you’re going to let guys who never play off the end of the NBA bench that nobody at home knows fill the NBA All-Star Weekend Dunk contest, then why not let some of the real dunk contest circuit guys who are not in the NBA take part?

Why do that? Watch that dunk above again.

That is 5’10” guy is “Young Hollywood” (his mother calls him Haneef Munir) and he did this three times at an event in Santa Monica last weekend Griffin was at to help sell some of his Air Jordans (this sweet ad will help with that, too).

What the dunk contest needs is creativity and energy — that’s what the dunk contest circuit guys bring. If Young Hollywood did this exact dunk in New Orleans next February at All-Star Weekend, he would bring the house down. Fans might even tune in (the problem with the dunk contest is that it doesn’t translate to television all that well, unless the dunk is off-the-charts). I know what the NBA needs is stars doing the contest to really get ratings, but that’s not likely to happen (not in great numbers, anyway). Young Hollywood won the 2011 Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown, he knows how to perform on a big stage. So why not let some fresh faces have a shot? That would be fun.

It’s been true for so many years now, the NBA ASG dunk contest is the worst dunk contest on the planet. I’m not sure the NBA could handle the fact that their players can’t measure up to even the lower tiers of streetball dunkers.

The final nail in the dunk contest coffin came in 2011. Both DeRozan and Javale killed it in the opening round, but they put Blake through just for the weak car dunk so Kia could get their sponsorship. After that, any hope of getting the stars to participate ended because they knew it was a joke.

I agree – it needs to either have the streetball dunkers or bring out a million dollar briefcase and ban the props. That would get people watching.

I agree let the street ballers dunk at the dunk contest. matter of fact have it be the street ball vs the nba dunk contest. Maybe that will motivate the stars to participate. The worst excuse is I dont wanna risk injury ,,, Realy???

    HOLY CRAP!!!! Really?

    • longtallsam - Aug 5, 2013 at 10:22 PM

No…not really! Because if they were good enough to “abuse” NBA players, they would be in the NBA. Sure, there are plenty of guys who are great in one facet of the game, like dunking, or dribbling, but they aren’t all-round, good enough to make an NBA team.

      • besttruckeralive - Aug 5, 2013 at 11:25 PM

Not true! Because it’s about more than being able to “abuse” NBA players! The NBA is a Brand! They can’t let guys in the NBA who refuse to lose their “thug” image! A couple sneak through the cracks i.e. The New York Knicks entire team but other than them I’m talking about real street thugs who wouldn’t even give up their thug image for the NBA! Believe it or not there are a few that can play with the best of them that the NBA just can not and will not ever allow in!

That would get ratings for sure. Street Dunkers vs nba Dunkers why can’t nba do this. Just have them sign release saying they not at fault. My 8yr kid has to sign it when he plays baseball. So I’m sure they will sign it. They get. 15 min of fame maybe even camp invite who know

Make this happen Adam silver. Cuz David stern is a punk
