Mark Cuban releases video Mavericks used in pitch to Dwight Howard

Aug 4, 2013, 11:00 AM EDT

The Mavericks were one of five teams Dwight Howard considered in free agency, although their plan to first pair the center with an aging Dirk Nowitzki and then try to lure other stars to join the team a year later ended up not being the most appealing option.

Teams go to great lengths to show their interest and commitment level when putting together their pitch, and in the Mavericks’ case, that included an animated video component aimed at showing Howard what life could be like for him in Dallas.

Mark Cuban released the video as part of an informative post discussing his philosophy in building his team over the past couple of seasons, and had this to say in explaining the decision to go after Howard.

No reason to re-hash last year. It sucked from every angle and was no fun for anyone.

So we went for a max free agent this summer. We had hoped that Chris Paul may be available  He wasn’t. So Dwight Howard was our first target once again.

Let me address here the inevitable question of Dwight vs Mavs culture.  We saw it as somewhat of a risk, but felt like because Dwight by all appearances and checking we did,  is a good guy and with our support systems we believed we could make it work.  if not, he was obviously a very trade-able asset.  But, as everyone knows, we didn’t sign him. He went to the Rockets.  I do have to say the meeting with Dwight was very interesting. He is a smart guy. Much smarter than people give him credit for. He is also a very, very good listener.  Unlike most people, he spent far more time listening than talking.  And he had the best response to an opening question that I have ever heard from a player, or anyone for that matter.  When we asked him what his goal was, his response was very specific ” I want to be Epic” .  Which was a perfect lead in to the video we created for him

The video seemed to have everything — the Superman cape on the animated Howard’s back, the idea that winning in Dallas would be fun, along with smiles all around with Cuban and a couple of future championship banners.

Ultimately, Howard chose Houston. But Cuban felt it was worth the risk to his team’s culture to pitch Howard on a max contract with the Mavericks — which says plenty about Howard’s otherworldly level of talent.

Seriously, that might be the most uncomfortable, cringeworthy video in Internet history.

When i saw “Global Domination” i lost it!

That was hilarious, no wonder he didn’t sign there. The thing showing how he was born from the stars was the best.

Depends on which state you live in.

The guy is s marketing genius. To us, it’s cheesy. But to an athlete with ego and narcissism? Such as Howard , smart play. He probably spent thousands making that

    • impartialsportstalk - Aug 4, 2013 at 12:13 PM

I happen to think Dwight is more like a normal guy than you think lol. And I wonder if the Rocket’s did a video, because they actually were able to sign Dwight

      “…smart play.” ???

      Apparently not.

    • antistratfordian - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:57 PM

I hope he didn’t spend more than 100 dollars to make it. I could make it for free and it would be a lot better.

    This is so lame….

  5. cowboysfaninbuffalove - Aug 4, 2013 at 11:57 AM

Dwight acts like 5 year old so the video is perfect for him

I have to say Mark Cuban is one of my favorite people in the whole world. He is one of the greatest success stories ever. But this is not anywhere near Cubanesque! Seriously, he does everything HUGE and does it right. This video looked like something I could have had made of Fiverr. No wonder Dwight didn’t sign there. If he’s as smart as Cuban gives him credit for being he must have thought “this is their best effort?” and been like no way!

Embarrassing, but not surprising considering Cuban’s inflated ego. Awful.

I’ll never get those 2 mins of my life back

Dwight Howard is very soft and will never win a championship. He is a liability in the fourth quarter of every game including playoffs, where all the games and championships are won or lost in the lat 3 minutes. All i can say to Houston Rockets is … good luck!!!! You will be like Oklahoma Thunder with a lot of flash but no substance!!!

Why would he post the video when it wasn’t successful? It just gives the whole world an opportunity to critique it to death.

  11. shanelsweet - Aug 4, 2013 at 5:03 PM

So Cuban says Dwight was smarter and a better listener than Cuban expected. Any chance Dwight noticed that vibe from him? Nobody wants to work for an employer who treats you like you’re stupid and won’t listen.

  12. aesmith777 - Aug 4, 2013 at 6:18 PM

That was embarrassing to watch. I couldn’t finish the video. It was almost like a cheesy Microsoft power point presentation made for a class in High School.

  13. kb2408 - Aug 4, 2013 at 6:55 PM

And I thought the billboards my LAKERS put up were embarrassing!!! All this hoopla for a guy that has never won a thing?! You would think it was a 27 year old Shaq on the market instead of Dwight.

  14. abchome - Aug 4, 2013 at 10:47 PM

Seriously? Wow! I bet Howard loves it, but there certainly are someone in his camp with more developed brain.
