Greg Oden’s decision on where to play likely coming this weekend

Greg Oden impressed the five teams that attended his private workout in Indianapolis last week, and more than one is said to be interested in taking a shot on the former number one overall draft pick whose career has been derailed to this point by a series of debilitating injuries.

Miami, New Orleans, Sacramento, San Antonio, and Atlanta all got a look at Oden, and while representatives from Dallas didn’t attend the workout, there is said to be a level of interest there, as well.

Wherever Oden chooses to sign, the decision isn’t likely to come until this weekend, at the earliest.

From Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald (via HoopsHype):

Center Greg Oden probably won’t decide among the Heat and five other teams until this weekend, agent Mike Conley Sr. said Tuesday, adding that formal offers haven’t been made yet. He said the Heat has seen “all it needs to see” from a medical standpoint and that Oden won’t necessarily take the highest offer. But asked if a Heat offer at the $1 million minimum would be good enough, Conley said he was not sure.

It’s interesting that Oden has yet to receive any offers, but it’s all part of the negotiating process. Much like restricted free agency, no team wants to be the one to set the market for a given player, only to see that player get a better deal to play elsewhere.

A one-year deal for the minimum isn’t likely going to be enough to get a deal done with Oden, unless only one team steps up with a bona fide contract. And while he may be looking for a low-key environment to make his comeback, he’s still more likely than not to end up in the situation that offers him the most guaranteed dollars.

I wish Oden nothing but the best- this may be his last chance.

There’s a girl in one of these cities who doesn’t know what she’s in for this weekend.

He will probably go after a money and you can’t blame him. If he does get injured again he can at least get some good money he can live off of.

Yes, but what type of breakfast cereal did he have this morning? If it was Cap’n Crunch, was it with or without crunchberries? We simply aren’t getting enough Greg Oden updates!

Just make your decision already! Man I feel like this is just dragging on forever. Might as well have a show like his son LeBron did and call it The Decision: Part 2. Sheesh!

No offers yet idiot. Need reading comprehension much?

Spurs would be best choice. Pop could manage his minutes and what he does to get the most out of him.

If Oden can come back and contribute, it would be another kick in the groin to the Portland franchise.

LOL . ” Center Greg Oden probably won’t decide among the Heat and five other teams until this weekend, agent Mike Conley Sr. said ”

I think the Heat will probably beat out ” other team ” number two if they want him . Even though I’m a Hawk fan and realize we not on his radar I hope he makes it back . He seems like a good guy .

The Heat is a bad fit simply due to minutes and the expectation to perform at a high level immediately. Also he can get more than 1 year at 1 mil. That’s insulting to a big man, even with his injuries.

You have to be kidding me with this comment right? You know they just won a 2 championships without him right? Come on, that comment is just asinine. He will be brought along slowly in Miami without much expectation. Anything we get from him is a plus.

      • uptjeff - Aug 1, 2013 at 11:56 AM

Why would he play in Miami for one year and then watch the team break up? Doesn’t make sense for a guy looking for long term security.

    • mrwormburn - Jul 31, 2013 at 11:48 PM

      U scarred?

    • zoomy123 - Aug 1, 2013 at 7:52 PM

Expectation to perform? You mean like playing 15 mins a night, playing some defense, rebounding, and catching passes from D-Wade and LBJ and then laying the ball up or dunking? Whew that sounds tortuous!

  11. bowmanj35 - Jul 31, 2013 at 3:12 PM

does it make me a bad person to root against him? its hard to root for him after he and Roy were supposed to take Portland to the promised land and both guys knees fell apart.

    • spursareold - Jul 31, 2013 at 3:19 PM

And that’s their fault? If you’re angry with anyone, be angry with the Portland front office personnel from that time. Both players had knee red flags before the draft, as did Jerryd Bayless, and the front office drafted them higher than they should have. It was a “health reach”, but every bit as risky as a character reach, and they did it repeatedly.

Wasn’t his decision supposed to happen this past Monday? I’m wondering if anyone has even offered him a one year minimum deal yet.

  13. jt1138 - Jul 31, 2013 at 3:53 PM

First, his decision was supposed to come Monday.

    Then, Wednesday or Thursday.

    Now, this weekend.

    I’m not holding my breath.

    • thatstinks - Jul 31, 2013 at 4:43 PM

      He hasn’t played in years . Don’t hold your breath ; )

  14. mrwormburn - Jul 31, 2013 at 11:46 PM

“And while he may be looking for a low-key environment to make his comeback, he’s still more likely than not to end up in the situation that offers him the most guaranteed dollars.”

Talk about wishful thinking and writing with an agenda. Author is afraid Oden is going to the Heat.

    • sykes2477 - Aug 1, 2013 at 10:52 AM

      Exactly! Thank you! :)

  15. uptjeff - Aug 1, 2013 at 11:54 AM

Oden is not going to the Heat to play for one year and then watch the team break up. He will be a Pelican.
