Report: Derek Fisher plans to retire after upcoming season

Jul 26, 2013, 3:38 PM EDT

Derek Fisher

One more go around, then Derek Fisher is done.

Fisher has been a shell of his former self for a few years now on the court but has hit enough threes and been good enough in the locker room that he keeps getting deals. That includes one for next season with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

But after that the guard who will turn 39 before the start of the season is going to call it a day, reports ESPNLosAngeles.com.

It will be Fisher’s 18th season in the league, and he enters it with the intention that it will be his last, the source said.

Fisher will be entering his 18th NBA season. While he’s not a great player anymore he will have an impressive playing resume that includes five NBA titles and a host of memorable moments. Fisher was always a smart but fearless shooter, and while that led to some questionable choices at points it also led to him being one guy who never got tight and had the same stroke with the game on the line as he did in the second quarter. There’s a reason Kobe Bryant liked and trusted him.

When his playing days are over, Fisher can pretty much write his own ticket: I could see him as head of the players’ union, as a politician, as a broadcaster, working for the league office, pretty much anything. He’s smart and he’s a natural leader, he can succeed at a lot of different things.
