Pierce, Garnett return to Boston for preseason game. Well, if they play.

It’s going to just look strange — Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett playing in the TD Garden in Boston wearing Brooklyn Nets jerseys.

It will happen twice during the regular season — but it could happen before that, during an Oct. 23 preseason game, reports CSNNE.com.

Of course, this is preseason, so it is certainly possible that neither player will make the trip. Veterans often sit out preseason games, especially one such as this where the return could be emotional.

Pierce and Garnett are iconic Celtics but agreed to a trade from Boston to Brooklyn this offseason (KG had a no-trade clause). The Celtics have embarked on a post “big three era” rebuilding project — just don’t call it tanking.

KG and PP make Brooklyn interesting as a potential contender. If everything goes right — if the older Garnett and Pierce are healthy come the playoffs, if Deron Williams returns to his Utah form, if Jason Kidd can coach — they are a real threat in the East. But that’s a lot of “ifs.”

Brooklyn and Boston actually will meet twice preseason — the Nets will host the Celtics on October 15.

But the real emotional return will come during the regular season. We should find out the date for that in the coming days when the NBA schedule for next season is released.

Wouldn’t it actually make more sense for them to go up and get the emotion of playing as visitors out when the games don’t count? I’m sure it will always be tough to go back to Boston, especially for Pierce, but it won’t be the first time.

No. This is not something that should be ‘gotten out of the way’. The Celtics will treat the moment appropriately and Pierce (especially) and Garnett will do the same.

It’s not like it was an ugly split, it was just business. They will come back, I will shed a tear and then we will play the game.

From the Nets perspective, you want the emotions to flow in a game that doesn’t matter. I have no doubt the Celtics will suitably honor both of them. The Nets don’t want Pierce and Garnett overwhelmed in a regular-season game if they can avoid it.

Kevin, you make a good point. We are on the same page. I just think it wouldn’t be cool of the Nets I suppose.

They’ll sit out and not play until the games matter. Barely any fans will even be there.

I’m still going just in case.

Well looks like I am going to two pre-season games.

Err one pardon. Will definitely be at that first Nets at Celtics game.

I was going to say they need the preseason to build chemistry so i expect them to be out there but then i thought The regular season will be their preseason they have a season to build chemistry the nets will microanage they’re minutes both in the regular season and the preseason.

Side note: great face by Garnett in that picture.

What Williams, Lopez and Johnson learn from KG and PP will be priceless. Not only that but the support and backing Kidd will get from KG and PP will really help to get him through his first season as a coach.

I’d love to see the Nets get desperate for guard depth late in the season and sign Kidd. If the Russian wants an attraction then a player coach is what he needs.

Player-coaches are illegal under the CBA.

You mean fun is illegal under the new CBA :D

Yep, and wouldn’t Kidd technically still be under contract with the Knicks?
