LeBron James picking music for NBA 2K14

Jul 26, 2013, 4:35 PM EDT

Maybe LeBron James really does work out to Imagine Dragons.

But I seriously doubt it. This has bugged me for a while – we’ve all seen that LeBron James/Powerbeats commercial more than we ever wanted, does anybody really think he gets his sweat in to Imagine Dragons? Anyone?

But apparently he does like them because he is personally picking the music for NBA 2K14, the company announced this week, and Imagine Dragons made the cut of artists whose music will show up on the soundtrack.

“2K is letting me take control of some important elements in NBA 2K14, including this year’s soundtrack,” James said in a released statement. “I love that I’m the first NBA 2K cover athlete to choose the soundtrack.”

Last year Jay-Z did the music for the game.

The AP reports songs on the game’s soundtrack include: Drake’s “Started From The Bottom,” Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight,” Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” featuring Pharrell Williams and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Can’t Hold Us,” with Ray Dalton. Other music acts featured are Jay-Z, Coldplay, Robin Thicke, The Black Keys, Eminem, Fly Union, Gorillaz, Imagine Dragons, Jadakiss, John Legend, Kanye West, Rick Ross, Kendrick Lamar, Nas and Puff Daddy.

I don’t think you can go anywhere and be safe from Daft Punk right now.

As for the rest of the list… lose Phil Collins and I’m good with it.

Good on 2k, it has to be fun to be able to pick a soundtrack that millions of people will listen to.

  2. goraidersgospurs - Jul 26, 2013 at 4:48 PM

Ill stick to NBA Live 14 all by my self, but how not like Phill Collins?

    • JMClarkent - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:14 PM

I am impressed that you are willing to align with a franchise that has been dead for years (and wretched for years before it died) before even pressing start on a demo.

    • phaden27 - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:53 PM

I still remember the last NBA Live I played, the one with Dwight Howard on the cover.
I also remember playing a game against my buddy and racking 50 points with Scalabrine off dunks.
Staying with 2K, regardless of who is on the cover.

this years 2k is just ad broken i can score 50 points jason collins…seriously

      • phaden27 - Jul 27, 2013 at 1:11 PM

You should try turning up the difficulty then. 😛

It’s pretty much the American Airlines Arena soundtrack, with Gorillaz. Heat fans, get it while it’s hot.

  4. 00maltliquor - Jul 26, 2013 at 4:54 PM

It’s gotta be better then the tracks Jay-Z picked for 2K13. And PLEASE, nothing off of Magna Carta Holy Grail! I love(d) Jay but man, that album was pure trash.

    • adoombray - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:17 PM

THIS! Hardcore 2k13 players all hate Jay-Z now after that awful soundtrack with videos that werent even cut in a way that was cool. Last year’s game was like the best sports video game ever will be hard to top especially since they will have competition from EA for the first time in years (and of course I have to get both Live and 2k14) but the music, the music is a LOCK to be better

“I don’t think you can go anywhere and be safe from Daft Punk right now.”

Why would you want to “be safe” from Daft Punk? They’ve produced some of the best music of the last 20 years…

  6. bifford - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:13 PM

At least is isn’t 90% JayZit and his pals.

  7. dirk504 - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:34 PM

Phil Collins is legendary. Should’ve included Lecrae instead of all negative rappers.

    • goraidersgospurs - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:30 PM

which negative rappers are on the list????

    • akmgiants - Jul 26, 2013 at 9:40 PM

I’m sure he’ll pick some great music

  10. kingcrusher - Jul 26, 2013 at 8:32 PM

I love his last comment “As for the rest of the list… lose Phil Collins and I’m good with it.”
What kind of crappy reporting style is that? Just give us the scoop and smile that we’re reading your article. If you really wanted, why didn’t you just make your own wish list and say “If it’s not this, it sucks!” lol
Phil Collins is awesome. One of the best musicians in the history of music.

Do you really think a 2K basketball game is the best sports game ever? They can’t even compete against EA’s FIFA 13. No 2K sports game can’t compete with the almighty FIFA Soccer franchise.

  12. jadaruler - Jul 26, 2013 at 8:51 PM

At least that terrible French Montana song he loves didn’t make it.

  13. onbucky96 - Jul 26, 2013 at 9:10 PM

Enya, Yanni, John Tesh, Celine Dion, Taylor Swift, Wham!, Ashley Simpson, Milli Vanilli, Vitamin-C, and Winger. After all, Easy Come, Easy Go!

  14. axelmontoya99 - Jul 26, 2013 at 11:25 PM

What’s next Chris Bosh singing the theme song for Jurassic Park 7?

  15. dirk504 - Jul 26, 2013 at 11:41 PM

Negative = rappers who preach drug dealing, murder, and fornicating. Kids will be playing this game and it would’ve been better to include rappers with a positive message. Rick Ross is the biggest fraud of them all.

  16. dirk504 - Jul 26, 2013 at 11:44 PM

Akmgiants? So rappers bragging about how much richer they are than you and a criminal life they all made up is not garbage? Grow up.

  17. daubs17 - Jul 27, 2013 at 1:41 AM

ya this is news why? might as well find out what lebrons favorite color is(let me guess…pink)

  18. smackingfools - Jul 27, 2013 at 7:34 AM

Yeah, lets drop Phil Collins in favor of more negative content and devil worshipping music. Seems to be leading us in the right direction.

    • jimeejohnson - Jul 27, 2013 at 12:56 PM

      Devil worshipping music: Mmmmmmmmmmmmm!

  19. smackingfools - Jul 27, 2013 at 7:40 AM

FYI. The local, small market drug dealer doesn’t even go around bragging about selling drugs. I’m pretty positive that if these rappers were what they say they are then they wouldn’t be telling over a million people how many drugs they sold and how many people they kill. Funny how an athlete can’t say anything without offending someone and a rapper can say whatever he wants. News flash… The rappers influence out youth more than an athlete.

    • brutl - Jul 27, 2013 at 5:45 PM

Look up BMF Entertainment, or the FBI files on ODB and the Wu-Tang Clan. Some of these guys are criminals first.
Still, it’s not all bad there are some real artists out there relating in a positive way. Glad to see Kendrick on there..
But musicians are artists and they should enjoy freedom of expression for that purpose. I think news reporters are much more dangerous because they’re expected to give factual information, just like an athlete would be in an interview.

The DJ in his hotel room in China helped LeBron pick the soundtrack.
