Derrick Rose thinks Derrick Rose is the best player in the NBA

Jul 26, 2013, 5:41 PM EDT

Derrick Rose AP

What do you want him to say?

You ask any elite NBA player who the best player in the Association is and they should say themselves. You don’t want them to say, “I’m pretty good but that LeBron James guy…” You don’t get to be that good without some ego and swagger.

So whether he spent last season on the shelf or not, when Derrick Rose was asked by CNN who the best player in the NBA is, you knew what the response would be. Aggrey Sam at CSNChicago.com summed the whole thing up well.

Thus, when the former league MVP was asked by CNN who the NBA’s best player is, it shouldn’t shock anybody that he answered, “Derrick Rose.” Any other response would have been unacceptable from a player of his ilk….

Knowing that he’s set to resume his role as the face of the franchise, shouldering the Bulls’ offensive burden and being the focus of opposing scouting reports in a season where the expectations are to contend for a title, if he wasn’t confident enough to accept that responsibility, then that would be a cause for concern. After Rose’s season-long hiatus, while he might not be fretting over how he’s perceived in the court of public opinion, he certainly realizes the increased pressure created by his extended absence and by giving himself that extra time to fully recover, he has to believe that he’s put himself in the best possible position to rejoin basketball’s elite.

Bingo. Nail on the head.

Rose’s handling of his injury return certainly gave him a PR hit in Chicago. As it should have — he had the right to wait until he was ready to come back, but his dragging out of the possibility of a return last season and working out before games tarnished his image.

The only way he fixes that is win. I figure by about Game 5 next season Chicago will have moved on and we’ll be trying to decide if the Bulls are contenders.

By the way, Game 1 for the Bulls is going to be against the Miami Heat. Welcome back to the NBA, Derrick.

Breaking: Derrick rose playing on phone while on sideline, hasn’t watched NBA in past year.

    • jhuck92 - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:03 PM

Breaking: Contrary to previous reports, Derrick Rose packs on 15 pounds of muscle and studies hours worth of game tape in addition to rehabbing his knee.

    • ss3walkman - Jul 26, 2013 at 8:06 PM

No way can you miss a whole year and a half and make a claim that your the best.

Should’ve said “I’ll show you why I feel I’m the best upon my return”

  2. money2long - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:48 PM

i try to tell yall, watch out for rose. love his mentality. love his game. love his approach. for me, after kobe retires, derrick rose will be my #1. just wait.

    • money2long - Jul 27, 2013 at 1:32 AM

      not #1 in the league… MYYYY #1. .. as in, my #1 attraction…pause

      • money2long - Jul 27, 2013 at 12:01 PM

this is subject to change however, as rose can ascend the ranks by that time. as of now, i am only speaking of whom i will enjoy watching the most. but rose very well can up his game to epic levels and be in discussion for best in the NBA.

  3. dbones750 - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:53 PM

    Eli manning is more elite

  4. dezglobal - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:05 PM

Remember when everyone said how great and modest he was? Yea anyways if I was a GM right now and had the opportunity to pick 5 players

    1) LeBron
    2) Durant
    3) Kobe
    4) Melo
    5) Rose

So yea he’s not the best

    • pudgalvin - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:38 PM

Just remember, last time Rose played a whole year, he was the MVP. Lebron probably got shafted, but Durant, who failed miserably without another superstar next to him last season, didn’t win it. Kobe, who’s team has woefully underachieved the last two years didn’t win it. Melo, who’s team doesn’t win anything ever didn’t win it. I’ll give you Lebron, but I think you’ve got a real argument as to who’s second best if Rose is anything close to what he was before the knee.

      • zoomy123 - Jul 26, 2013 at 11:01 PM

As long as Durant plays at the level he’s playing at, Rose will NEVER be number 2 in the league. Durant just had a 50-40-90 season…at 24 years old, and if Russell Westbrook was chucking up shots every time he touched the ball, KD would be dropping 35 a game. Plus, as he becomes a better passer (he’s already averaging 4.6 dimes a game) he’ll become a legitimate triple double threat every night. Unfortunately, Derrick Rose might be the next Andy Murray: a very gifted player who happened to have played in an era with all-time greats in their prime.

    • 00maltliquor - Jul 26, 2013 at 10:59 PM

      Melo, lol

    • swalkppal - Jul 27, 2013 at 7:55 PM

If you were a NBA GM and chose a 35 year old guard in your top 5, you wouldn’t be a NBA GM.

      • jimispackers - Jul 28, 2013 at 6:15 PM

Nail on the head, ding ding! Young, fresh legs are the essence of building a team.

  5. saint1997 - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:16 PM

Sorry to be that guy but this has been news for like 3-4 days…

  6. jimbo062981 - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:19 PM

In the what have you done for me lately world we live in he right now he probably ranks behind Paul, Rondo, Harden, and Paul George too. DNP last year, injury prone the year before that. Hopefully he can return to MVP form.

  7. jpizzle227 - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:19 PM

Derrick rose is wrong in his assessment of Derrick rose.

  8. dadawg77 - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:22 PM

Kobe, really? A guy with two to three elite level years left at most, is your third player? Oh…. wait guess David Kahn is posting here now.

    • fanofevilempire - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:52 PM

Yeah Kobe, the guy with 5 rings, the guy who said I had to go hit those free throws
after tearing his Achilies and he did, that guy.

      • dadawg77 - Jul 31, 2013 at 11:03 AM

GM take players for the future not just two years away. Thus a GM would be a fool to take Kobe in the top ten if there was a NBA redraft. I am not saying Kobe sucks or doesn’t have a better career then maybe anyone else in the league, just he is on the downward slope of his career and you probably could get a few more years before he becomes MJ on the Wizards.

    • antistratfordian - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:21 PM

Kobe didn’t know his achilles was completely torn yet. He said he was still thinking that maybe he could come back in the game… so he had to shoot those free throws. It was a 2 point game with 3 minutes remaining when he went down.

  9. patfic15 - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:39 PM

Lol. No you’re not. I wouldn’t draft this guy top 10.

    • aptt15 - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:51 PM

Sounds like the Heat fans are still upset about the Bulls picking Rose over Beasley

      • rlaw421 - Jul 26, 2013 at 10:13 PM

Aptt, if Rose was drafted by the heat, we wouldn’t have gotten lebron and the last two trophies. How many trophies does Rose have? Nada, zero, 0!

    • kb2408 - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:19 PM

And that’s precisely why you’re not an NBA G.M.

      • patfic15 - Jul 26, 2013 at 8:29 PM

You’re right. If I were though I would follow LAs model of partnering bigs with one of the more overrated players of our generation. Kobe was simply a bridge during an era of growing superstars. He wouldn’t have been nearly as noticed in the 90s. Best thing to happen to Kobe was Colorado. Brought him attention and numerous defenders.

  10. antistratfordian - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:45 PM

Seems like he’s just been sitting around for a year coming up with ways to ruin his reputation. Well it’s working.

    • lmoneyfresh - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:50 PM

One game into next season and everybody will forget about all of that.

    • kb2408 - Jul 26, 2013 at 8:48 PM

“Ruin his reputation”? With who, fans that don’t have a clue? He made the right choice for himself and for the Bulls.

      • antistratfordian - Jul 27, 2013 at 12:01 AM

There is only one guy involved in this story who doesn’t have a clue… and it’s not one of the fans.

  11. ss3walkman - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:46 PM

Rose has been on the sideline too way too long. He’s become delusional

  12. holleywood9 - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:06 PM

5 rings is past not present buddy. He’s old and nearly done

    • kb2408 - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:29 PM

Are you referring to the same player that was 1st team all NBA last season in his 17th year? Look, if I’m starting an NBA team right now I’m taking Rose over Kobe. But let’s not act like Kobe is some washed up has been who’s barely hanging on to a roster spot. When someone else wins five rings, makes 1st team all NBA in his mid thirties and has one of his best seasons in the twilight of his career then maybe you can talk. And perhaps you don’t watch much basketball, so correct me if I’m wrong, didn’t Kobe and the LAKERS win a title just three years ago in 2010?

      • antistratfordian - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:36 PM

Tim Duncan was also 1st Team All-NBA. He’s definitely not a top 5 player in the league.

… and I don’t think last years was one of Kobe’s best. I’d say it was one of his worst especially from a leadership standpoint.

      • kb2408 - Jul 26, 2013 at 8:38 PM

So, let me get this correct. Duncan was voted to 1st team All NBA but he wasn’t one of the five best players in the league last year? According to those who vote on things like that he was. He sure looked like a top five player in the league during the Finals. Plus, what does that have to do with Kobe anyway? Kobe shot the best fg percentage of his career last season AND he led all two guards in assists. But, by your standards, it wasn’t one of his best seasons?! The crap about his leadership qualities is overblown. Unless you have been his teammate you don’t know what type of leader he is. Unbelievable…It just goes to show, in the eyes of some, no matter what he does it’s not good enough. As I’ve said before, I’m just glad his peers and those that really matter aren’t as biased as some of you guys are.

  13. kb2408 - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:15 PM

I love D. Rose. Chicago is very fortunate to have this kid. And the great thing is, he will probably spend his entire career there. I’m willing to bet he leads the Bulls to at least one title. In my opinion, he is the perfect blend of confidence and humility. If you saw the interview when he answered the question he did so without any hint of arrogance. Yes, I know that LeBron is the best player in the world at this moment. But I would much rather have a player like Rose who feels in his heart that he is the best, than to have a player who justs wants to have fun and smile out on the court (Dwight). Rose might be very low-key in his speech and mannerisms but the kid is an assasin. He’s going to come back with a vengance next season. Just watch and see.

Can you stop using the same picture for every Derrick rose article?

  15. supremekingz - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:29 PM

I posted this on Facebook 3 days ago

  16. jzone954 - Jul 26, 2013 at 8:01 PM

Rose isn’t even the best PG

Listen….explosive kid. Great talent and yea can still develop. In order to be considered the best in my eyes , he has to do a little of everything. Lebron James does ALOT if everything…..I mean I get it…..what else is he gonna say….

  17. tbutler704 - Jul 26, 2013 at 8:13 PM

Personally I try not to ask stupid questions. The media….not so much.

  18. reesesteel23 - Jul 26, 2013 at 8:34 PM

Westbrook and Rose are the same player. Prove me otherwise

    • fanofthegame79 - Jul 26, 2013 at 9:14 PM

Pretty much what I’ve been saying for years!! If OKC didn’t have Durant, we’d be hearing more about Westbrook!

      • reesesteel23 - Jul 26, 2013 at 11:08 PM

Likewise…..Westbrook would average 30…probably lead the league in scoring every year

  19. fnc111 - Jul 26, 2013 at 8:52 PM

Rose was completely shut down by Lebron 2 years ago in the playoffs. Maybe Derrick should shut up.

  20. jadaruler - Jul 26, 2013 at 8:53 PM

Good to know he’s ready to go. November can’t get here fast enough.

  21. onbucky96 - Jul 26, 2013 at 9:05 PM

Onbucky96 thinks Onbucky96 adds the best comments on all the NBC SportsTalk pages. See Mr.Rose, see how dumb I sound? You sound even dumber. If you had put your jersey on vs the Heat and won, you’d have an argument. Now you’re all talk. Just…like…me(dropping the mike).

  22. itsthemelman82 - Jul 26, 2013 at 9:56 PM

I wouldn’t want D. Rose say anything else but he’s the best. If you’re a competitor, why would you say someone else is better than you??? Slurp LeBron all you want but, D. Rose played just as well as LBJ and earned that MVP! If both guys are healthy next season, they’ll meet at some point in the playoffs and may the best man win… it’s that simple

    • pantsfreezone - Jul 27, 2013 at 12:04 AM

Rose didn’t deserve that MVP and everyone but delusional Rose and Bulls fans knows it.

Rose is going to be a disappointment and Chicago isn’t going to win anything in the near future. Truth hurts.

    • antistratfordian - Jul 27, 2013 at 12:13 AM

They’ve met in the playoffs twice already when both were healthy… LeBron won 4-1 each time.

It won’t be different in the future.

  23. antistratfordian - Jul 27, 2013 at 12:17 AM

Here’s the problem. LeBron is a bona fide all-time great in his prime who is still flat out dominating the league. Magic Johnson and Bill Simmons have him as a top 10 all-time player…. and D.Rose is trying to say he’s better than a prime top 10 all time player?

Sometimes it’s appropriate, even as an alpha male, to set your ego aside and give a guy who deserves it his due. No one is going to think less of you for doing that.

  24. sirkennerly - Jul 27, 2013 at 2:18 AM

So is D. Rose not allowed to have self-confidence after he was injured and sat out a season? What’s Rose supposed to say, “I bow down to LeBron and am servant to all he says and does.”?? We all know LeBron is the most skilled player at the moment, but we all don’t have to constantly pay homage to him like some Egyptian god if basketball. I mean, c’mon! LeBron is cheesy as hell with his personal DJ and cell phone advertisements. It’s necessary to have confident, down-to-earth players like D. Rose.

    • jimeejohnson - Jul 27, 2013 at 1:06 PM

Not all of us know that King James is #1. You’ve got the hateful, jealous pea-brains who look to denigrate him at every turn. In reality, all these pea-brains do is expose themselves as first class no-nothing LOSERS. It’s no surprise: there will always be more stupid than smart people.

  25. albie23 - Jul 27, 2013 at 5:18 AM

Westbrook is not the same as Rose! Rose does what he does cause he has to but Westbrook does it cause he wants the Spotlight!! Do you really think Rose would be shooting the ball more than Durant if they played alongside one another? Rose would be leading the league in assists with a scorer like Durant. Rose does whatever the team needs! Now quit hating on him and shut your pie hole! And LBJ cheated by teaming up with BOSH & WADE, that’s like MJ teaming up with Magic & Bird and claiming he’s great cause of the titles he’s won! LBJ left his team to get with Wade cause he couldn’t lead a team, he couldn’t mold a winner with what he had!
