Otto Porter didn’t expect first NBA practice to be so fast-paced

Jul 9, 2013, 7:37 PM EDT

Otto Porter, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft by the Wizards, is not an elite athlete compared to the other players selected around him. He also played for Georgetown, the 301st slowest among 347 Division I teams last season. The Hoyas heavily structured offense relied on timing, passing and shooting more than Porter’s explosiveness.

But that will change for him in the NBA.

Quickly.

Via J. Michael of CSN Washington:

“It didn’t go what I thought it would go like,” Porter said after his first practice Monday. “The way you think about the first practice, it was something you didn’t expect.

“His system, you want to get out and run more. The system where I’m from, its more slow-paced. But I’ve got to get back to my high school days always running. It’s not that bad.”

Porter’s challenge won’t get any easier when he heads to Las Vegas for the summer league, where games are often haphazardly full of fouls and turnovers. With Sundiata Gaines point guarding the Wizards’ summer-league team, don’t expect them to be the exception to the rule, either.Perhaps, a few hectic summer-league games will do wonders for Porter. They could re-calibrate his senses, and then by comparison, NBA play would no longer seem so drastically different than Georgetown.
