Kelly Olynyk continues to impress at Summer League with the Celtics (VIDEO)

Jul 9, 2013, 2:02 PM EDT

When Kelly Olynyk burst onto the Summer League scene in Orlando with a 25-point, seven-rebound debut performance on Sunday, it was easy to want to downplay the accomplishment.

Plenty of players are able to have a single big game against the inferior competition the summer session brings, but Olynyk, the thirteenth overall pick in this year’s draft that was traded to the Celtics, has impressed now for three days straight.

Highlights of Olynyk’s 21-point, nine rebound performance in Tuesday’s win over the Pacers’ squad can be seen in the clip above. In addition to the offensive skill set shown, where Olynyk is comfortable in many different spots on the floor and is able to use his dribble to get himself into position to score, what isn’t seen is some of the high-IQ decisions made by the young seven-footer in the areas of both rebounding and passing.

Consistency is often the quality in shortest supply for players during Summer League, but Olynyk has bucked that trend with solid performances in all three of his outings.

Impressive. He has a nice game for a 7 footer. It’s going to be hard for other centers to guard him. Rondo is going to have fun with this guy.

Plus they have some other young talent on the team. They will probably be in the lottery next year with their own pick and they also have NJ’s #1 and they might move up in the draft by trading 2 for 1 and there is next year’s FA class and they have 2 #1 picks in 2015, 2016, 1 in 2017 and 2 more in 2018.

Interesting pick for a coach but I think Ainge knows what he is doing. He has to get Rondo to buy in to what he is doing and if he can – that will be good. Let RR be the leader – give him the responsibility, maybe there is a teacher somewhere in his makeup.

Being an optimistic Celts’ fan I think they’ll be in the playoffs within 3 seasons at the most – end of the 2016 season, possibly even the 2015 season.

Its going to be hard for him to guard other centers. By the way he’s more of a four. Like a Nowitzki type.

He and Mason plumlee have looked pretty good this summer league and look like solid backups and Olynyk a possiblity starter one day. Like a Chris Kaman ish player with better range. This is one of the ups players that stay four years in college. Both literally look like men against boys against most of these players. Not sure how it will actually translate to the NBA but they have done what they are supposed to so far.

    I love watching summer league!

After the game, he was seen waiting for Randall “Pink” Floyd and Wooderson to pick him up in Melba Toast to take him to shoot pool and play foosball at the Emporium.

The thunder should’ve drafted him instead of steven adams

Steven Adams actually looks pretty good. If he develops, he’s more of the type of player the thunder need then Olynyk

    Next Dirk?

The Celtics got a nice player here. He might not be an elite athlete but he still can be a very solid player in the NBA. You don’t find 7 footers that shoot like him, with the craftiness in the post like he has. Pair him with Rondo and who knows how many good looks he will get. Combine him with the rebounding and post presence of Sullinger and Jeff Green and you have a nice young front court. I think he can be a 10-12 ppg big man this year. He’s more NBA ready than most big man in this draft, he might not have the highest ceiling but he has the highest floor of any of the big man in this draft.

Looking like Dirk, Jr. in the post.

PLEASE just ditch the Lincecum Do before the season starts…

    • jcmeyer10 - Jul 9, 2013 at 4:48 PM

You see, Lincecum and Olynyk are like Sampson. They need the hair (Biblical) and their weed (Half Baked)… well the verdict is still out on Olynyk needing the green to succeed.
