When the Clippers engaged in the three-team deal that sent dynamic point guard Eric Bledsoe to Phoenix in exchange for Jared Dudley and J.J. Redick, they improved at the wing and shooting guard positions but suffered a substantial loss in terms of a capable backup to Chris Paul.

The Clippers continued their shrewd offseason decision-making by filling that void with Darren Collison, who has agreed to a two-year deal according to multiple reports.

Marc Stein of ESPN.com reports that Collison holds a player option for that second season, while Sam Amick of USA Today reports that Collison’s deal will pay him $1.9 million for next year.

Collison and Bledsoe are similar in that there is a widespread, irrational love for each player’s skill set. Both are quick and athletic, and can score and handle the ball effortlessly at times, while (for the most part) possessing an ability to initiate the offense.

Collison had his opportunities in Dallas, but failed to make the most of them, and was eventually fighting for minutes with (and lost his starting job to) the 38-year old Mike James in the latter part of the season.

Despite Collison’s inconsistency, he’s a solid pickup for the Clippers considering the overall talent he brings for the price. He holds career averages of 12.1 points and 5.2 assists in 29.5 minutes per game, has played only four NBA seasons, and was a teammate of Paul’s with the Hornets back in 2010.
