Report: Rockets trade Royce White to the Sixers

Jul 5, 2013, 9:00 PM EDT

Royce White AP

This is almost better news for the Rockets than the report that Dwight Howard has agreed to sign in Houston.

Royce White, the talented but troubled first round draft pick of the Rockets in 2012, has been traded to the Sixers, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

Philadelphia will receive the draft rights to international prospect Furkan Aldemir and cash in addition to White, while the Rockets will clear White’s $1.7 million from the books in exchange for “future draft considerations.”

White didn’t play at all last season for the Rockets, and was very open publicly about an anxiety disorder which prevents him from flying at times, among other things.

Houston suspended White at one point last season for failing to report, but eventually convinced him to play in the D-League where he ended up averaging 11.4 points and 5.7 rebounds in 16 games with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

If you’re wondering why the Sixers would bother taking a risk on White, the reason is that there’s a Houston connection in the Philadelphia front office.

The new GM of the Sixers, Sam Hinkie, came from the Rockets, where he was the executive VP of basketball operations prior to getting the gig in Philly. He likely was involved in the choice to draft White, and believes there’s still hope for him with a new team to contribute at the NBA level.

Gonna be a long drive to Philly

    • badintent - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:15 PM

I think Shaq will lend him his monster RV the Heat bought him.

      • 00maltliquor - Jul 6, 2013 at 2:51 AM

You’ve got to be the most randomest person on these message boards bro, for real…what goes on in your mind? LOL! Keep doing you though, I love it!

      • badintent - Jul 7, 2013 at 1:31 AM

Shaqiting the Fool. That’s how I roll. Tall guy thing

      • 00maltliquor - Jul 7, 2013 at 2:25 AM

        Lol! That’s whats up.

  2. apkyletexas - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:07 PM

Crazy. Reminds me of when Jerry West traded Pau Gasol to the Lakers for a bag of used balls and a 3-day family pass to Disney Land.

Pretty nice to have friends in other teams’ front offices!

    • Kurt Helin - Jul 6, 2013 at 2:34 PM

Marc Gasol was part of that deal.

    • ProBasketballPundit - Jul 6, 2013 at 4:02 PM

Yeah no kidding. You sound like 2008 Gregg Popovich. Marc Gasol was a good get for a team that might have lost Pau to free agency anyway.

  3. tcclark - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:11 PM

The Sixers got a young talented 1st round player, an international prospect, and cash for essentially nothing. I think this is well worth the pain of letting him take a bus.

    • bougin89 - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:24 PM

Call me crazy, I still think Royce White is a prospect that is worth something. I agree, good trade for the Sixers.

      • metalhead65 - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:30 PM

ok you are crazy! hope the deal included a supply of Tylenol for the sixers because he will give them nothing but headaches.

      • bougin89 - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:35 PM

They included enough cash in this deal for plenty of Tylenol. Don’t you think?

      • biasedhomer - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:40 PM

They had to give up an international player AND cash to get rid of White, which pretty much is saying Royce White has negative value.

      • abchome - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:44 AM

He’ll be fine. Just give him a bus and let him travel wherever he likes, and keep him away from the team and the media…

      • tfoz5150 - Jul 6, 2013 at 7:52 AM

They’re saying they did this just for his expiring contract.

      • bougin89 - Jul 6, 2013 at 10:36 AM

Good point. They can decline his next two years.

  4. bellerophon30 - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:11 PM

Oh dear God, did Bynum teach them nothing?

    • biasedhomer - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:22 PM

I’m pretty sure the Sixers are not planning to build around White like he’s some sort of superstar. But that’s just me.

      • bellerophon30 - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:26 PM

A hassle is a hassle, even at 10% of the price. And since White’s upside is so much lower than Bynum’s………

    • bsplaincs - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:53 PM

I didn’t know Royce White was into bowling as well……..

  5. sportsnut101 - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:15 PM

    Enjoy phila transit system

  6. jcrileyesq - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:24 PM

nj, ny boston, wizards driving distance… White knows this is his last opportunity if it pans out got a quality player if not easier for them to tank the season

  7. dare9498 - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:28 PM

I see White is in a D-League jersey in this picture, I didn’t realize they ever got that man to even play a game this season.

  8. timb12 - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:29 PM

I can’t wait to hear White’s take on this!

  9. karlton3 - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:32 PM

While correct, the headline is misleading. It should be something like:

“76ers trade for International prospect, cash; Rockets require them to take White to complete the deal”

  10. fnc111 - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:32 PM

Royce needs to grow a pair of balls and fly. What a pu$$y.

    • jmgatskiejr - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:12 PM

Thank god you’re lucky enough to be disorder free to be an judgemental, callous loser and kick a guy with a mental health issue.
Should he have been upfront with the Rockets about the severity of the issue and worked out a compromised contract to cover loss of production and limit his income? Absolutely. He could have signed a services contract doing community outreach stuff etc while undergoing treatment with an agreed up medical group. His player contract could have been modified to kick in when he started to fulfill agreed upon milestones. I’m sure the Union would have worked with the team.
To make ignorant ass statements like yours makes realize how much bigotry there is toward mental illness even today.

  11. tomshoe - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:33 PM

    Waste of talent.

    Waste of a draft pick.

    Waste of my time.

  12. fnc111 - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:34 PM

Royce needs to grow a pair and fly. What a v a g

  13. rickyspanish - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:45 PM

    fnc111

Panic disorder and anxiety are no joke. Meatheads like you will never understand that until it happens to you. I hope you don’t have to deal with any sort of anxiety in your life because it’s awful. You should have a little sympathy. Don’t you think he wants to play and make millions of dollars? Of course he does, but his problems are debilitating.

    • spursareold - Jul 6, 2013 at 8:26 AM

He apparently was not completely forthcoming before the draft about the degree of his issues. No sympathy in that case.

    • 6thsense79 - Jul 6, 2013 at 2:17 PM

Well then it may be time for a new occupation don’t you think? He can’t perform his duties as a professional athlete. No different than someone with a physical disability not being able to run up and down the basketball court.

  14. darrkkomens - Jul 5, 2013 at 10:27 PM

The Sixers are doomed and will be bad for the next 10 or so years. What is Hinkie still secretly working for Houston, horrible GM choice, Horrible new owners, Horrible Royce.. Why!!!!!! He can’t play, won’t get on planes now we took on a new problem, traded away our best player.. SIXERS SUCK .. Let me know when there are new owners and a new front office.. This is a disaster

    • biasedhomer - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:48 PM

The Sixers goal is to lose games next season. White helps this goal. Plus they need to get to the salary floor.

    • sasquash20 - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:32 AM

I actually like the new GM so far. Yeah it sucks to lose Holiday but it wasn’t like they were anywhere close to winning. And while Holiday is a good young combo guard he isn’t a guy you build around. He is more of a guy you build with. By losing him they got Noel (who could be a defensive stud), a 1st next year, and they should suck and have a good shot at a top draft pick. Next years draft is supposed to be really strong at the top. Not to mention by trading with the Pelicans they didn’t have to match salaries because the Pelicans were so far under the luxury tax line. So next year we Sixers fans should actually have real hope for the future, instead of the last decade plus when we were stuck in the middle of the pack. In the NBA you almost have to suck before you actually get better.

  15. gmsalpha - Jul 5, 2013 at 10:50 PM

Now Royce can drive to games in Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Buffalo, Charleston, and Virginia Beach.

  16. tcclark - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:08 PM

I really don’t understand people hating this. Even if he only plays home games, we just traded for a former 1st round pick, an international prospect, and cash for NOTHING.

  17. kingjoe1 - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:43 PM

Alfemir is a true coup. As for White, he could be huge if…but let’s be real all those making fun of his mental illness are truly low life schmbags

    • biasedhomer - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:50 PM

While it is an illness, I feel like Royce also brought some of it (the whole mess with the Rockets organization) upon himself.

    • metalhead65 - Jul 6, 2013 at 10:28 AM

no we are not scumbags white is. the rockets did everything they could for him and he rejected all their efforts to help him. he used his “illness” to get paid while not doing his job or working with the professional help they had set up for him. he did it because they actually wanted to work with him to help him over come his problems and wanted to stick with his everybody baby me approach. good luck with that attitude 6er fans.

  18. jcmeyer10 - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:07 AM

Pretty happy with Sullinger instead of this guy. Thanks Rockets!

  19. lavoysboy - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:12 AM

How can you not like this, he is gonna be a 2 year pro. The worst that happens is we put him in the D league, and hope he develops. Plus NBAD league has produced some quality starters and good bench players. I am not giving up on a guy who only played one year and has potential. Oh and we didn’t give anything up for him! How can the sixers lose? Except they are gonna lose a ton this season..

    • spursareold - Jul 6, 2013 at 8:30 AM

I think their plan for white is to pass on his year 3 option in October, and let him roll off the books next summer. Talent is only useful if it can be utilized. Royce comes with WAY too much baggage, like OHare airport amount.

  20. cantonbound13 - Jul 6, 2013 at 8:35 AM

If this guy actually plays, would it be wrong to hold up pictures of airplanes as he shoots free throws?

  21. htowntexan - Jul 6, 2013 at 9:47 AM

Our GM is great at making deals, but awful at draft picks. Three first rounds picks last year, and none of them are any good. And this guy — not sure what to say. Anxiety is a serious issue, but we knew he had this issue. Thank you for taking him off our hands.

  22. ProBasketballPundit - Jul 6, 2013 at 3:56 PM

Royce who? Sorry, I watch the NBA. I’ve never seen the guy.
