Wizards re-sign Martell Webster to four-year, $22 million contract

Jul 2, 2013, 2:52 PM EDT

Martell Webster

The Wizards drafted small forward Otto Porter, but incumbent starting small forward Martell Webster remained the top priority in free agency.

That’s because Webster, who signed a one-year contract with Washington last summer, shot a career-best 42.2 percent on 3-pointers and helped the Wizards go from 28th in 3-point percentage to 10th. For a team relying on John Wall’s driving and Emeka Okafor and Nene in the post, Washington needed Webster to space the floor. Bradley Beal couldn’t fill that role it alone, and he still won’t have to next season, either.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports:

This has all been confirmed by CSNWashington.com.

Webster’s game and salary are now commensurate with a low-end starter or high-end backup, which are two roles he could play next season. Porter is Washington’s small forward of the future – and maybe the present.

If Porter is immediately ready to start, Webster can come off the bench. If Porter needs more time, Webster is a nice stopgap.
