Mavericks allow Darren Collison to become unrestricted free agent

Darren Collison might have played himself out of a contract offer from the Mavericks.

Collison – by averaging 41 starts or 2,000 minutes in the last two seasons of his rookie-scale contract (he actually did both) – increased his qualifying offer from $3,342,175 to $4,531,459, and the Mavericks declined to extend that higher offer by the June 30 deadline, according to Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports. That makes Collison an unrestricted free agent.

If the Mavericks had extended the qualifying offer, Collison would have had the right to match any offer to Collison, an advantage they surely would have liked to hold. But the risk would have been Collison immediately accepting the qualifying offer and turning it into a one-year, $4,531,459 contract.

With the Mavericks all in for Dwight Howard and trying to clear cap space to make that happen, extending Collison a qualifying offer was a risk they couldn’t take.

This won’t stop the Mavericks from re-signing Collison, and they still hold his bird rights.

Collison is a good PG, very inconsistent but he’s still good. maybe he’ll never be a starter in this league but he’ll get another chance to play. Carlisle hated him, especially if he was willing to have Derek Fisher start instead of him.

    Cuban’s Sales Pitch To Dwight.
We Have Old Man Dirk With Bad Knees & Nothing Else.
    Dwight, NEXT.

But Cuban spends on his players. Their locker room is all decked out with what these kids want. Each locker stall has a video game system in it, everything is plush and first class. Everything for these guys around the team, training, facilities, amenities etc… is top rate due to Cuban spending on his guys, even their chairs in the locker room.

It isn’t the end all by any means, but some of these kids like that stuff. Look at what the top college teams are doing with their locker rooms. The new USC facility is amazing. The Alabama Crimson Tide have a waterfall in their locker room now.

Dwight likes to play and goof off. Who knows what he wants.

Dirk will take less like Duncan did after this coming yr. Cuban has and will pay for players.

I still think Dwight will go to Houston due to Harden because he’s so much younger than Dirk…

I would love to see my Pacers bring him back. D.J. didn’t get it done. The Pacers need to add something in the way of a pure pg to feed Hibbert and West. You can’t make Paul George handle the ball, guard the top scorer and then ask him to score… it’s too much.

Pacers signed CJ Watson, a solid pg and a much better defender than Collison. It’s a good fit and better one than re-acquiring Collison would have been.

Bring him to the Lakers to learn clutch decision making from Nash. Bring him!
