Phil Jackson to Dwight Howard: ‘I expect to see you get on board’ with Lakers

Jun 30, 2013, 2:30 PM EDT

Former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Jackson speaks during a ceremony to retire jersey #34 in honor of former Los Angeles Lakers player O'Neal during their NBA basketball game against the Dallas Mavericks in Los Angeles Reuters

The Rockets are first in line to meet with Dwight Howard once free agency commences at midnight Eastern, but that doesn’t mean other teams aren’t going to let their wishes be known where Howard is concerned

While no contact with free agents is allowed by teams until 12:01 a.m. on July 1, that doesn’t extend to those with no formal employment relationship to a given franchise, even though we may be well aware of where this individual’s particular sympathies lie.

Phil Jackson reached out to Howard via Twitter early Sunday, and although he didn’t mention the Lakers specifically, his message to the free agent big man was unmistakable.

Jackson is currently spending time in his second home in Montana, and won’t be present for the Lakers meeting with Howard this week — thus the quote from this song in the first line of his message.

Again, Jackson is not connected to the team in any official capacity. But the fact that the Hall of Fame coach reached out with some fatherly advice to Howard can only be seen as a positive in the Lakers’ overall recruiting pitch to get Howard to stay in Los Angeles.

I don’t think his comment is pointless. All the signs point to the Lakers firing Mike D. If Howard signs with the Lakers and hiring Phil. I have never heard of a team telling there HC to wait on hiring a coaching staff unless he maybe fired.

Love the Taj Mahal reference, but you’re gonna have to play it for him, Phil.

I don’t think it’s the coach D12 has an issue with. The D’Antoni is just a fassad. The real story is Kobe.

D12 is not willing to wait 2 or3 years for Kobe to retire. he wants to be Alpha Dog right away.

Why worry about if there is an issue with Kobe?? The real issue is the BIG picture of getting ready to win another Championship and the Lakers with Kobe and D12 know how to get there. Keep Building with this team. Remember, The Heat is still the team to beat.

Why did Phil quote a song that says to get out of L.A.?

Good catch! Seems like one of those DaVinci Code things where a simple lyric is supposed to signal Howard to execute “the plan.”

The title of the article is : “Phil Jackson to Dwight Howard: ‘I expect to see you get on board’ with Lakers”

No where does it say Phil wants him to go to the Lakers. After actually reading the lyrics to the song, and the fact that if you click on Phil Jackson’s twitter account and NONE of the rings that are shown are Laker rings he only shows his Bulls rings, and the fact that the Lakers dissed him to get D’Antoni…this could be code for “Get the hell out of LA!”

Phil, you are in your Montana house. Eat your shroons and be quiet. Howard is Buss’s problem , remember ? Remember he didn’t hire you.? Guy is losing it. Jennie better get up there and hive him some loving.
