Nowitzki says he has reached out to Dwight Howard already

The Dallas Mavericks remain on Dwight Howard’s short list, if reports are to be believed.

Mark Cuban has built an organization guys want to play for, and while he would share the spotlight with Dirk Nowitzki for a year or two Howard would be the alpha dog in Dallas. This would be his team; it would be rebuilt around him.

Nowitzki is already tampering… er, helping to recruit Howard to Dallas, he told the Star-Telegram.

“I reached out to him and told him we’d love to have him,” Nowitzki said. “It’s not like we call each other every day. I didn’t write him a letter. We just had a little phone contact. That’s about it….

“To me, when he’s healthy he’s the most dominant big man in the league,” Nowitzki said of Howard. “He’s shown that at the end of the season when he was right what he can still do.

“He can dominate on both ends of the floor if he feels healthy, he can still use his athleticism. He’s a beast on both ends of the floor.”

But sure Lakers fans, good riddance to him. He can easily be replaced, right?

Howard came back from back surgery too fast last season and wasn’t right, and that combined with the coaching change to a radically different philosophy, and the injuries to Steve Nash and eventually Kobe Bryant, doomed the Lakers season.

But Howard is still the best center in the game when healthy. He can be a force at both ends of the floor (although he needs to accept he should be used more in the pick-and-roll than the post). Wherever he lands that team is either a contender or on the cusp of it.

So the smart play is to have your star reach out and say he wants Howard on the team.

I’d rather predict the moods of a 14-year-old girl than what Dwight Howard wants to do in free agency or what he will say July 10. But Dallas is in the mix and Dirk helps that cause.

    That’s cool. Dwight’s in Houston house-hunting today.

He actually just posted an Instagram video of him at a basketball camp at UCLA.

Really, guys want to play for Cuban’s organization? Why’d they all leave?

Just thinking about the Lakers opening night roster makes me laugh.

Stern’s getting out just in time. His two favorite franchises have just taken up residence in the lower level of the outhouse.

        Knicks and Lakers.

Yeah, but just thinking about all those banners in the Staples makes me smile.

As for Howard’s being the alpha dog – you’re only the alpha dog if you come through in the clutch.

The dude dragged a horrible team and a lousy coach all the way to the NBA finals. Name me another player who has ever done that. He’s come through in the clutch plenty of times.

The Lebron James-Cleveland era comes to mind..

If he’s concerned about being the face of a franchise asap he should go to Dallas. Kobe is still the face of the LAKERS (for better or first worse) and the Beard is the face of the Rockets. That’s why I don’t understand the Houston thing. The Beard is the man for that team, has the ball in his hands most of the time, and is option number 1. Harden is also a few years younger than Dwight, so if he goes there he’ll still be the “2nd fiddle”. At least in Dallas or Los Angeles he will eventually become “the man”. In Houston that will probably never happen. If he goes to Dallas who else will they have? Dirk and Dwight is not enough to win a title.

You have to be A man to be THE man, so that won’t happen for Dwight, no matter where he goes. He’s a beta male.

His people are looking, should have clarified.

Last year, didn’t Kobe “reach out” as well :)

Dwight might not like Los Angeles: it’s not humid; it’s got an ocean; and there’s great food and culture all around. It’s not like Orlando, in any way! Those Texas cities may have more of what Dwight likes.
