Nets draft player who hopes to play as well as his coach does

NEW YORK – Jason Kidd is one of the NBA’s all-time greatest point guards, but he retired for a reason.

At 40, he could no longer keep up with the game’s younger players. That’s no knock on Kidd. it’s just what happens to nearly every player at that age.

Simply, Kidd is no longer an NBA-caliber player, and that’s why he’s coaching the Nets instead of contributing more scoreless games for the Knicks.

So, maybe the Nets’ first-round pick, Mason Plumlee shouldn’t answer questions about playing his new coach one-on-one this way:

“If I can hang with him,” Plumlee said, “I’ll be alright.”

No, Mason, you won’t be alright just because you can hang with a retired player. You’ll be alright if you can carve out a backup role on what suddenly looks like a contending team.

Alas, maybe the rest of Plumlee’s answer to the one-on-one question reveals how he can do that.

“That’s my coach,” Plumlee said with a laugh. “I don’t want to speak on that right away.  No, he’s a hell of a player.”

Ah, brownnosing, that’s the trick.
