Trey Burke was selected by the Timberwolves with the ninth overall pick in the draft, but Minnesota has traded him to the Utah Jazz for the 14th and 21st overall picks in this year’s draft, reports Jon Krawczynski of the Associated Press.

The Timberwolves reportedly decided to move down in the draft after seeing the players they were targeting — Victor Oladipo, Ben McLemore and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope — already selected by other teams.

The deal makes sense for the Jazz, who need a point guard and Burke is someone who can step in and contribute right away. Kurt Helin breaks down for us what Burke brings to the NBA:

“Maybe the most household name in this draft thanks to his NCAA Tournament play. He may also be the rookie with the biggest impact next season. He is a very good offensive player, especially off the pick and roll. He can shoot with range or drive the paint and he has good court vision. The only questions are his height and how that impacts his defense. But nobody questions his heart, he is a leader.”

Minnesota ended up with Shabazz Muhammad at 14, and Gorgui Dieng at 21.

I love the move for the Jazz; a slide by Burke plus a crafty move definitely equals a pick that I can get behind.

Crazy pissed they traded the 26th away for basically nothing, a 2nd rd and cash is a joke, should have drafted Glen Rice Jr., position of need at 2-3. Rice is going to be the SOD of the 2013 draft. He showed up in the d-league post season and proved he can play against pro quality competitors.
Like the Shabazz pick, might not be a super star but will be a good piece at the 2 guard. Now they just need a full season with all the pieces together, I foresee a 6 seed next year if that happens
