Report: If Boston can move Pierce for pick they will go after Josh Smith. Really?

Josh Smith is part of a rebuilding plan? Josh Smith and Rajon Rondo on the same team together?

It doesn’t make a lot of sense if the plan is to rebuild a championship team — unless you think you can do that around guys with shaky jump shots — but the report from Sean Deveney of the Sporting News is that the Celtics could make a run at the Hawks free agent.

As for the rebuilding sure to follow the dismantling, that is contingent on what happens with Pierce. If the Celtics can unload Pierce to a team with enough cap space to absorb his salary, they will get a trade exception worth Pierce’s salary, or $15.3 million. And if that happens, the plan is already in place. According to a source, the Celtics have a sign-and-trade offer ready for Atlanta forward Josh Smith that would be the top priority in free agency.

Smith and Rondo were high school teammates and this is not the first time Smith has been tied to the Celtics via trade rumor.

Also, if the Celtics traded Paul Pierce to the Cavaliers, as has been one of the rumors, then they would generate a big trade exception to make the math work out.

But is this really rebuilding a championship team? I just can’t see it. File this one under a real long shot, but the report is out there and it certainly has gotten people talking.

this celtics team would have looked a LOT better with Rondo/ DeAndre Jordan combo vs a Rondo/Smith combo…

    Stern Screwed you guys man..

    • rodyaugu - Jun 26, 2013 at 2:55 PM

Smith is a way better player than Deandre Jordan, I dont know what criteria you came up with to conclude that a 6’11 center with no post game, no jumper, and shaky post defense is better than a guy who averages 15.3 ppg and 8 rebounds per game. Not to mention neither Rondo and Jordan can shoot freethrows. A Rondo/Smith combo would be way better than a Rondo/Deandre combo.

I would say it might work…..IF DOC WAS THE COACH!!

    • kb2408 - Jun 25, 2013 at 3:45 PM

Dude, Doc is a coach not a miracle worker. Josh, Rondo, Green etc., ain’t beating Chicago, Miami, or Indianapolis.

    • 808raiderinparadise - Jun 25, 2013 at 5:58 PM

Strongly dislike the Celtics but if Josh Smith was Rondo’s High School teamate this is a great move, because whatever young coach comes in has to deal with Rondo’s lil moody girl mentality maybe Josh and him together can make Rondo more team/coach friendly ….

      • somekat - Jun 25, 2013 at 6:01 PM

Yes, Josh Smith is going to HELP Rondo be a better teammate….yeah, that’s a risk worth taking

  3. bucrightoff - Jun 25, 2013 at 2:32 PM

Celtics need to get on that tanking train for Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker or Marcus Smart or Julius Randle or…yeah next year is stacked.

  4. ranoversquarells - Jun 25, 2013 at 2:40 PM

If Ainge gets Smith I’m boycotting the season …

    • kinggw - Jun 25, 2013 at 8:21 PM

Because they were so good last year.

    • turdfurgerson68 - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:47 PM

Please do. Don’t need any more bandwagon fans

      Enjoy rooting for the Heat.

  5. kanemoney - Jun 25, 2013 at 2:41 PM

No way – celts know better

  6. terrellowens81 - Jun 25, 2013 at 2:42 PM

It could work if KG stays. Rondo, Bradley,Green,Smith, KG sounds like a good starting 5… At least better than the Lakers.

    • kb2408 - Jun 25, 2013 at 3:50 PM

Only in Boston would they concern themselves with beating the LAKERS, while ignoring the fact that they won’t beat Chicago, Miami or Indy with that team! At least in Los Angeles we don’t expect the LAKERS to win a title next season. But those expectations will change in 2014-15.

      • turdfurgerson68 - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:52 PM

“But those expectations will change in 2014-15.”

Typical delusional Laker fan…already assuming Lebron is going to LA.

Sorry friend, but the Lakers ain’t getting anywhere close to the Finals for YEARS to come.

  7. bougin89 - Jun 25, 2013 at 2:48 PM

IF this happens do they keep Garnett and try to make a run with Rondo, Smith, Garnett?

    • mysterious - Jun 25, 2013 at 3:06 PM

im guessing so. i wonder what the package for the hawks is, im guessing either bradley or sullinger

  8. 13arod - Jun 25, 2013 at 2:50 PM

smith sucks he doesn’t know how to pass the ball and he said he wants a max contract he is worth 5 million at the most

  9. wvuandsteelers - Jun 25, 2013 at 3:03 PM

Pierce to Atlanta in a sign and trade? Atlanta needs a 3 and it just pushes their cap room to next year (Howard and Paul are the longest of shots right now). Or maybe he goes to Cleveland who sends one of their centers to Atlanta.

    • thatstinks - Jun 25, 2013 at 3:06 PM

Think B . No way Ferry pays 18 mil for Pierce . I think Pierce to the Clip and Bledsoe to Atlanta would be…..smoove . Ha !

      • mysterious - Jun 25, 2013 at 3:07 PM

pierce is 15 million not 18

      • remmsterr - Jun 25, 2013 at 7:22 PM

The David Stern is blocking any trades that involve Celtic players being traded to the Clippers and vise versa – even if there’s a third team involved.

      • remmsterr - Jun 25, 2013 at 7:23 PM

Meant David Stern* not The David Stern.

  10. thatstinks - Jun 25, 2013 at 3:04 PM

So long as the Celtics new coach doesn’t have a problem with long jumpers and a me first attitude it will be a great match . If Doc almost got in a fight with Rando he would beat Josh like a pinata .

    • kinggw - Jun 25, 2013 at 8:15 PM

When has Josh Smith demonstrated a me first attitude? Smith is known for taking a few bad shots, but he hasn’t been a malcontent even though he’s been the subject of trade rumors for the past three years.

      • thatstinks - Jun 26, 2013 at 8:23 AM

Sure he has . He has been kicked out of [practice and asked for a trade . As far as the me first attitude I mention , I feel he shows it be continuing to take those gross outside shots .

        Josh Smith Mid-range Jump Shots (2012-2013): 51-of-187 (27%)

        Joakim Noah Mid-range Jump Shots (2012-2013): 42-of-112 (38%)

  11. jaerba - Jun 25, 2013 at 3:14 PM

To be fair, isn’t this how a lot of people saw Pierce back in the day? When he was playing with Fatoine, did anyone really think he was a championship team leading player? Sure, he had better numbers than Smith, but he was taking 20 shots per game and making <45%, and he always got worse in the playoffs.

I'm not saying they have similar careers but they had similar perceptions of just being good allstars, but not superstars. Then KG and Allen show up and people start calling him clutch and saying he's a winner. No one was saying that during the first half of his career.

    • drewzducks - Jun 25, 2013 at 9:13 PM

      Fatoine. Love it.

  12. bostonian13 - Jun 25, 2013 at 3:24 PM

What’s so bad about having Rondo and Smith on the same team?!? Smith is the perfect type of athlete to run a fast break with Rondo, and for Rondo to throw lobs to. We saw what he done with KG in the first year n a half of the big three before Garnett’s injury. Bradley or Sully might have to be apart of that sign n trade but you’re still looking at a lineup that consists of: Rondo, Lee, Green, Smith and KG. Not bad at all if you ask me, and then all you have to do is add the right role players around them. We might be a 4-7th seed but maybe one of the most dangerous. But that is of course with the right coach.

  13. readysethike - Jun 25, 2013 at 3:54 PM

i like this move…if doc was the coach…o well hopefully lionel answers danny ainges call

  14. JHathwell - Jun 25, 2013 at 3:59 PM

People acting like Josh Smith is Benoit Benjamin. SMH.

Anyway, Rondo excels in the open court, as does Smith & Green. Having this team push the pace next year is a good idea, and I’m sure Ainge is still intent on turning Garnett and Pierce into more draft picks to go with the one they got for Doc.

This team might not be contenders right away, but i like their chances to be good again rather quickly.

  15. readysethike - Jun 25, 2013 at 4:15 PM

hopefully Lionel is hired. so Josh Smith has an incentive to want to come to Boston

  16. flyrocket31 - Jun 25, 2013 at 5:22 PM

i actually like that core. if Rondo comes back healthy. but their bench needs alot of work

    • flyrocket31 - Jun 25, 2013 at 5:23 PM

Smith, Rondo, Green and Garnett. with courtney lee at the two?

  17. gary2525 - Jun 25, 2013 at 5:48 PM

That would be stupid on the cleveland parts to trade away 2 picks for Pierce he is 35 and has a couple years left and wants way to much money. Don’t get me wrong he’s good but not worth all that money. It’s cleveland anything can happen in that town.

  18. bigwii - Jun 25, 2013 at 5:56 PM

This could be a very good step for the future of this team. Rondo, Smith, and Green would be a very solid defensive trio along with a very good and exciting fastrbreak offense. If Green can build off of what he did at the end of last year and in the playoffs that would be huge for this team as well. It would be a airshow in transition, and would be tough to defend. The only problem is this would not be a championship team by far, and would still need a few more pieces to get close to it.

They would still need a shooter that can create his own shot, which they could get in the draft with a guy like Ledo, he could play SG with Bradley and be the scoring to his defense. The other thing would be a center, Melo might be that guy down the road but that is not a sure thing, they need to sure it up with at least one more either in the draft this year or next maybe in free agency. They would still need to sure up their bench with some more shooters, especially a backup PG.

Either way if they can find shooters to surround Smith, Rondo, and Green the team could be tough to deal with for years to come being as young as they are. There is a lot of potential here.

  19. sergeyjan - Jun 25, 2013 at 6:17 PM

This would be great! They could also try to get J.R. Smith because he doesn’t want to go back to N.Y. and make him the starting 2 guard with Rondo Smith Green Smith and Garnett (asuming KG doesnt get traded to clippers….its ok David Stern will just veto the trade)

  20. barkley4life - Jun 25, 2013 at 6:36 PM

According to certain Celtics fans that regularly post here(ahem you know who you are) there should be no need to rebuild. The Celtics only lost to the Heat last year because Avery Bradley and Chris Wilcox were hurt….and this year it was injuries. And Courtney Lee and Jason Terry were huge upgrades that were gonna make them deeper. And Jeff Green was gonna give Lebron fits and etc etc etc

  21. scalfor3 - Jun 25, 2013 at 7:15 PM

Hate this. You’ll be entertaining and lose in the first round every year with that core. Get bad now and grab someone good in next years stacked lottery.

  22. halfbaht - Jun 25, 2013 at 8:17 PM

Better off paying The Truth $15 mil than a sign and trade for that scrub josh smith. Sulli is a better choice to start at PF anyway

    • kinggw - Jun 25, 2013 at 8:43 PM

Josh Smith is a real scrub. In the past three years he’s averaged 18/9/4 while Pierce has averaged 19/5/4.

Unlike Pierce, Smith didnt have the benefit of playing with an all star caliber point guard. Sullinger as a starter, you can’t be serious. Comments like yours showcase why its hard to have an objective basketball discussion with some C’s fans.

      • halfbaht - Jun 26, 2013 at 10:06 AM

pierce didn’t even get to play with a point guard this season, we didn’t freaking have one! besides, pierce has shown for years what he’s made of, regardless of team mates. not like teague isn’t a good point either, so you can’t blame him for smith’s short comings. sullinger will only become better with more playing time, i’d rather see him develop than waste minutes on smith. josh smith is a scrub. look at the guys attitude. boston doesn’t need a cancer.

  23. watermelon1 - Jun 25, 2013 at 8:21 PM

Just go all the way with non-shooters and get rondo, smith, and Dwight Howard.

  25. saintlaron - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:28 AM

Bloggers/commentators act like guys can’t develop jump shots. We’ve seen it happen over & over again; the longer guys stay in the league the better their jump shot will be if they put in the work. Rondo + Josh Smith + Avery Bradley = a hard lineup to score on. Let Jeff Green handle the bulk of the scoring. That would be a decent start to “rebuilding”. Rondo can carry a team when he is focused.
