LeBron sets the record straight, says Spurs’ Danny Green did not party with the Heat after Game 7

Jun 23, 2013, 3:30 PM EDT

Green-LeBron

After the Heat won their second straight NBA championship, the party moved from American Airlines Arena to the Miami night club Story, where the team partied into the wee hours of the morning celebrating its hard-fought run to the title.

There were plenty of photos and videos to come out of the evening’s festivities, but perhaps none were more interesting than the one featuring LeBron James giving a hug to San Antonio Spurs sharp-shooter Danny Green.

That particular picture became newsworthy, of course, due to the fact that it was a bit odd to see a member of the losing team appearing to be partying with the newly-crowned champions.

But that’s not exactly what took place.

So, after Green became the subject of scorn in the days following the celebration, James took to Twitter to defend his former Cavaliers teammate on Sunday.

Fans would like to believe that players on opposing teams have a certain level of animosity toward one another, but the reality is that most of these guys grew up playing together either on the AAU circuit or in college. And plenty, as is the case here with James and Green, have a relationship based on being former NBA teammates.

Oh, okay. Good. Glad photos of Danny Green came out. Glad he’s okay. He went missing after Game 5….

  2. BigBeachBall - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:43 PM

He left…. With a case of champagne on lebrons tab…. Shhhhhhh…

    • flyrocket31 - Jun 23, 2013 at 6:01 PM

the club picked up the100k$ tab!

      • stayhigh_247 - Jun 23, 2013 at 8:25 PM

then thats a dumbass club owner.

      • apkyletexas - Jun 24, 2013 at 2:07 AM

I love how The King had to reach over the rope and across the heads of several hangers-on in order to give the fake half-hug to Green.

Nothing spells self-important narcissist quite like roping off the VIP section of a loser club for yourself and your “friends”. Green should have stayed at his hotel and stayed out of the photo.

      • apkyletexas - Jun 24, 2013 at 2:10 AM

I should have said: Nothing spells self-important narcissist quite like roping off the VIP section of a loser club for yourself and your “friends” — and then tweeting about it.

  3. fearthehoody - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:48 PM

You kidding? Who doesnt get dressed up, drive all the way to a club late at night, and say hi to a friend just to go back home after?

    • capya - Jun 23, 2013 at 4:32 PM

      Only a couch-bound cheetos-muncher would consider a grey t-shirt “dressed up.”

      • davidly - Jun 23, 2013 at 6:35 PM

Seriously ? Even, like, a brand-new gray t-shirt without any Cheetos stains on it yet?

  4. packhawk04 - Jun 23, 2013 at 4:06 PM

Who said he went home? Ive gotten dressed up, went to some clubs, saw a guy i knew in the place, went in said hi and left right away. I didnt go home, though.

    • cmehustle - Jun 23, 2013 at 6:36 PM

Did yall go to his place?

  5. jerrysshadescleaner - Jun 23, 2013 at 4:14 PM

lol it was danny greens bday week or somethin like that so he went to party, said he saw lebron was there, said hi and stayd a few n left. besides they were ex team mates so not a big deal. hes a kid, hes gonna party, n u kno there were plenty of hot ladies at that club, probably took one and split

  6. jerrysshadescleaner - Jun 23, 2013 at 4:19 PM

And good for Bron to back the kid up, was a great series, could have gone either way n the heat are champs, so spurs n green gotta come back stronger, congrats heat fans, not bandwagons though – Spurs Fan

  7. mlbbal52 - Jun 23, 2013 at 4:19 PM

    Who cares.

  8. jamieaadams - Jun 23, 2013 at 4:21 PM

Good on LeBron for taking some of the heat off the kid. See what I did there?

  9. rodge1 - Jun 23, 2013 at 4:39 PM

    @capya

Only a ‘View’-watching couch-sitting bonbon-eating woman would worry about what an athlete wears to go out.

    • eventhorizon04 - Jun 23, 2013 at 7:25 PM

It’s quite amazing how badly you missed the point of capya’s comment.

    “Dapped Up”

    Love it

    • ProBasketballPundit - Jun 24, 2013 at 9:59 AM

But you’re a Miami fan (me too). At this point you’d love it if LeBron said they “fapped up”

  11. hatesycophants - Jun 23, 2013 at 4:58 PM

I take exception to the suggestion that this ever became newsworthy.

  12. jcmeyer10 - Jun 23, 2013 at 5:09 PM

    Why do we care?

    • dci744 - Jun 23, 2013 at 6:16 PM

Yet you couldn’t resist leaving a comment

      • hatesycophants - Jun 23, 2013 at 7:11 PM

        That doesn’t mean anyone cares.

      • jcmeyer10 - Jun 23, 2013 at 8:19 PM

I am not responding to the article but the people who think a situation like this is impossible and demeaning to their favorite franchise.

Just because you toss around hate on a message boards doesn’t mean your favorite player does too.

  13. dolphindubs - Jun 23, 2013 at 5:19 PM

I’m just glad Danny Green was finally spotted. He disappeared after Game 5….

    • apkyletexas - Jun 24, 2013 at 8:37 PM

Yeah – tell me that Heat fans weren’t crapping their pants when he stepped back and buried that 3 near the end of game 7.

You know they were thinking, “don’t let him get loose – oh please oh please lord don’t let him get loose”.

  14. mannyfresh209 - Jun 23, 2013 at 7:35 PM

    This

    • samonelastains - Jun 24, 2013 at 10:22 AM

      is probably exactly what happened.

  15. totallyuselessme - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:20 PM

How you gonna hate on a guy for being a good sportsman to a person he’s friends with?

I don’t get the people whining about this.

  16. anhdazman - Jun 24, 2013 at 1:13 AM

The media acts like basketball players or famous people can’t have a life off the court. They were team mates in Cleveland. They’re in the fraternity of NBA players. It’s not a big deal to be friends with other NBA players once they’re off the court.

Media once again, blowing things out of proportion.

People who are criticizing Danny Green really need to get a f***ing life.
