Report: Doc Rivers tried to fight Rajon Rondo after Celtics point guard swore at him

Jun 22, 2013, 12:30 PM EDT

Doc Rivers, Rajon Rondo

Most reports have said Doc Rivers might not want to return to the Celtics because he’s wary of rebuilding, but is there another factor?

Chris Sheridan of Sheridan Hoops:

A source close to the Celtics tells Chris Sheridan of SheridanHoops.com that Rondo droopped an F-bomb on Rivers in the locker room during a team meeting, and Rivers went after Rondo and tried to fight him before the fracas was broken up.

If this report is true, it puts a whole new spin on Rondo’s I’m-not-easy-to-coach comments.

But before passing judgment on the Rondo-Rivers relationship, much more context is needed.

  • When did this happen?
  • Whose perception of the incident is this?
  • How rare these altercations between people in such a competitive environment?
  • How did Rondo and Rivers respond afterward?

Until some of those questions are answered, it’s difficult to discern how meaningful this report is.

this is really going to be a interesting off season.

    • fanofevilempire - Jun 22, 2013 at 1:06 PM

      It already started.

      • hehateme2 - Jun 22, 2013 at 2:58 PM

IMPLOSION!! Rondo is a punk, always has been. Rivers deserves better than this motley crew.

  2. ryanprzy - Jun 22, 2013 at 12:42 PM

    Outstanding.

  3. angulocarlos1 - Jun 22, 2013 at 1:33 PM

Rondo is a POS, when you think your above your coach, something is wrong with you

  4. patfic15 - Jun 22, 2013 at 1:43 PM

Not gonna rush to judgement. It does sound like maybe they need to move on from Rondo tho…I’m sure he would yield some food value.

    • patfic15 - Jun 22, 2013 at 1:44 PM

      * uh good….but food is cool too.

    • gymtruthteller - Jun 22, 2013 at 3:23 PM

Get rid of the talent and keep the coach to lazy and stupid to handle his job. Glad you are not in charge of the NBA

      • patfic15 - Jun 22, 2013 at 3:36 PM

Yes. Just my keyboard….and we are on equal playing fields. Because keeping talent is always the answer… Sprewell..Rodman..Randolph.. Cousins….etc.

      • patfic15 - Jun 22, 2013 at 3:37 PM

And someone has to coach the talent…but you knew that.

      • gymtruthteller - Jun 22, 2013 at 4:16 PM

Rivers was hated until the title was won. Most people remember him sitting on his $$$ while the Heat ran up the court scoring at will in 05 and if you are a real fan you know what happened before and after that until 08 and even after that. Rivers is garbage and people need to realize the Celtics won in spite of him not because of him. Go get a real coach

        I know you’re lying.

  5. dudermcrbohan - Jun 22, 2013 at 1:47 PM

should have traded him for Curry when they had the chance.

  6. 1historian - Jun 22, 2013 at 1:48 PM

The biggest word in the whole English language is the word “if”.

We don’t know for sure IF this happened.

But our worthy correspondent finds it a good idea to build a whole piece on this supersized word IF.

Such is the state of so-called “jouirnalism” these days.

    Sigh

This is a blog. It is based off opinion and speculation.

        More’s the pity!

  7. gmsingh123 - Jun 22, 2013 at 2:02 PM

That fight sounds waaaay more interesting than the average Celtics game.

  8. 13arod - Jun 22, 2013 at 3:14 PM

I have to admit that rivers could get mad easy during games

    • jcmeyer10 - Jun 22, 2013 at 3:25 PM

Yah, split season tickets and was 15 rows behind the Celtics bench and he could really get into it.

  9. gymtruthteller - Jun 22, 2013 at 3:22 PM

If Rivers cannot handle the players he should not be coaching and this while thing looks like Ainge leaking info so Doc his friend won’t be hated on his way out and everyone can blame Rondo.

    • patfic15 - Jun 22, 2013 at 6:03 PM

Doc handled 3 future HOFers. Did that just fine. Should have gotten another ring or 2 while he was at it. This story is just an extension of the conversation with Rondo last week in which he stated he could hard to coach. With the Clippers breakdown, its damage control time. The plan may be to shop Rondo and this is how you appease a fan base. You bring out dirt. Look at Hernandez in NE. All the new stories about him that were hush hush. Celtics need to start over with or without Doc. If you lose the Big 2, then just go ahead and get as much value as you can. The Celtics have a hard time with top tier free agents going there so they to build as much now as they can. Can’t wait 4-5 years with Rondo. He would be too old by then.

      • gymtruthteller - Jun 22, 2013 at 6:15 PM

Nothing was handled until they won. Pierce sought with him for years I saw it at games myself. Just because the media reuses to paint a true picture doesn’t mean they all liked him even if they claim they did. You think Allen would be in Miami right now if Doc had handled Rondo like a real coach would have? I am going to love this team tanking in the next few years when KG finally leaves because Celtics fans deserve reality

  10. dlk47823 - Jun 22, 2013 at 4:40 PM

Rivers is the captain, trying to jump off a sinking ship.

  11. bcgreg - Jun 22, 2013 at 4:42 PM

OMG, an F-bomb was dropped in an NBA locker room. How many F-bombs does Garnett have to drop before Doc loses it? I just don’t think Doc likes Rondo, which is fine, but Rondo would have made a difference in the playoffs (Sullinger too).

  12. chargerdillon - Jun 22, 2013 at 10:09 PM

And people wonder why Rivers wanted out of Boston. The biggest young star is a total hothead who regularly blows up and gets ejected in games, regularly blows up on his teamates maybe people have forgotten the friction between that guy Ray Allen who just won another ring by leaving the drama behimd, oh and now there’s “rumors” he got into it with his coach.

True or not, where there’s smoke there’s fire and I find it easier to believe it happened rather than to doubt it did.

Rondo is and has been the issue with Boston only now nobody is going to trade for his damaged goods.

  13. 2bemoore43 - Jun 23, 2013 at 12:08 AM

really people? Unless youre a Spurs fan, an OKC fan, a Bulls fan or a LaC fan, you’re probably hoping your GM can snag Rajon for cheap… like him or not, he’s the best PG in the game hands down…. Mitch please look into this. thank you in advance… Lakers’ Nation

    • Anoesis - Jun 23, 2013 at 12:42 AM

Rondo has a lot more talent, but the Lakers don’t need another Smush Parker-like head case.

  14. thelastpieceofcheese - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:22 AM

I’d like to see Doc come after Garnett.

  15. kenneallys06 - Jun 23, 2013 at 11:51 AM

Rondo is the cancer on the Boston Celtics . It is time to cut the cancer out and get some good players here that are willing to respect good coaches like Doc and the team . .
