Report: Clippers, Celtics talks to send Garnett, Rivers to L.A. stalled

Jun 15, 2013, 8:18 PM EST

Celtics forward Garnett and head coach Rivers react to a foul called on Garnett in the second half of their NBA basketball game against the Atlanta Hawks in Atlanta. Reuters

UPDATE 8:18 pm: The talks have apparently stalled out. Which shouldn’t be shocking. But things are stalled out, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports as well as others.

The Celtics want DeAndre Jordan, Eric Bledsoe and two first round picks for Kevin Garnett and the right to talk to and sign Doc Rivers. The Clippers reportedly have offered Jordan and one first rounder, not wiling to part with both Bledsoe and Jordan. And right now things are at an impasse. Not dead, but stalled out.

5:12 pm: What seemed like a long shot is moving closer and closer to reality.

The Clippers are getting closer and closer to bringing in Kevin Garnett to anchor their defense just like Vinny Del Negro wanted. Except Del Negro isn’t there to coach them.

Talks have gotten serious between the Clippers and Celtics around a deal that would send KG to Los Angeles as well as the rights to sign Doc Rivers as a coach, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

The final hurdle of a deal centers on the Clippers’ willingness to include guard Eric Bledsoe into a trade package with Boston, sources said.

Boston and Los Angeles are discussing a package that will send DeAndre Jordan and two first-round picks to the Celtics for Garnett and the right to hire Rivers as coach, sources said.

The report adds that both sides want to get this taken care of in the next couple of days or they will walk away from the table.

ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reports the reason the Clippers want to keep Bledsoe is they want to package him and Blake Griffin to try and trade for Dwight Howard after July 1. The Lakers want to re-sign Howard and keep him as their star, but if they were going to lose him for nothing they would consider a sign-and-trade options — but not ones from the Lakers. They are highly unlikely to send their best player down the hall, no matter who is coming back.

While the Clippers like Rivers and the pedigree he brings, the Clippers were very impressed with Lionel Hollins in his coaching interview this week, tweets Ramona Shelburne of ESPN. That gives the Clippers some leverage in these talks to hold on to Bledsoe for now — they feel they are going to land a great coach either way.

Garnett would have to waive his no trade clause, but he is expected to do that for this deal. Chris Paul is a free agent but everyone around the league thinks he will re-sign with Clippers this summer, regardless of whether this trade happens or not.

The Clippers are also talking with the Celtics about getting Paul Pierce. However, this likely would be two separate deals and not one huge package. A pierce trade would happen at a later date.

This is a clear sign that Boston is moving closer and closer to blowing the entire thing up and ending the “Big Three” era. It is possible Doc, Garnett and Pierce are back in green next season, but it seems less and less likely.

For the Clippers, this is an all-in move as a contender, because KG has a window of a year or two, tops. That owner Donald Sterling is willing to come close to the $7 million a year Doc Rivers was making in Boston shows he is much more committed to winning than he gets credit for.

The Rocks have wanted D12 for the last few years, and they also want CP3. Do they want them bad enough to do a sign and trade with the LAKERS? Asik and Harden?!! Harden would be a better fit for the LAKERS than D12 would. He’s a proven go to scorer and could definitely be the heir apparent to Kobe Bean. Plus, he’s the type of star other stars would love to play with. I know it’s a long shot but I also believe Mitch has an ace up his sleeve that’s going to shock the NBA. After all, at this time last year who thought Nash and D12 would soon don the PURPLE AND GOLD? Better yet, who saw the vetoed CP3 deal to the LAKERS?! I just don’t see them letting Kobe’s last couple of season go down the drain without doing all they can to win another title or two.

This is the same thing as Allen leaving!! Garnett has a no trade clause it’s his decision just like it was Allen decision.
Why do you people even talk about loyalty how often are teams loyal? I’ll give you a hint NEVER. Teams do what’s best for the team 100% of the time. When a player sucks the owner doesn’t want them and trades them or doesn’t resign them. Why is there no loyalty on that end?

    • km9000 - Jun 15, 2013 at 11:00 PM

If a star player leaves your team, that’s bad for the team. If your team re-signs a player, but they’re better without him in the long run, that’s also bad for the team. They can’t put one player above everyone else, just out of loyalty.

  3. jimsjam33 - Jun 15, 2013 at 10:27 PM

Ridiculous ! It’s Blake Griffin bringing the fans into Staples Center not CP3 . The Clipper fans love the new Clippers with the lob highlights every night . We’ve gotten attention for the first time in in LA Clipper history . Now you want to trade for D. Howard who can’t shoot free throws and has a bad attitude ? He can’t play in crunch time because of the Shaq a hack defense . So where does that leace the Clips ?
DeAndre for Garnett okay , but no Bledsoe and two first rounders . That would be the fleece of this century .

    • kb2408 - Jun 15, 2013 at 10:33 PM

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, jj33, but as presently constituted, the Clips aren’t winning a title. Blake is no better than Dwight in crunch time. Actually, they’re both one and the same. Neither has very many low post moves and neither can shoot free throws. At least with Dwight your Clips would be greatly improved defensively.

      • jteng044 - Jun 16, 2013 at 3:15 AM

You’re wrong about the freethrows. Blake shot 80% from the FT line in the playoffs. He has gotten much better. He is also more offensively skilled than Dwight. Dwight is just bigger and a better defender. Dwight is also one of the least skilled centers in the NBA. Everything he does is power and relies solely on his athletic ability.

    • adoombray - Jun 15, 2013 at 11:40 PM

Blake Griffin is possibly the most overrated player in the NBA. he is charismatic and likable and was the Clippers first real bonafide star, but CP3 is the one who is going to win them a championship, Blake wins them ESPN highlights.

  4. andyreidisfat - Jun 15, 2013 at 11:14 PM

I am confused, the clippers who finally have a team full of young exciting players, want to trade said players for an old guy who wAs great and was only good last year and will probably be not as good as last year and the player with the least heart in all of American sports ….. I don’t get it.

I will laugh at the clippers if they make all these trades.

  5. jkaflagg - Jun 15, 2013 at 11:52 PM

I could see Jordan & a draft pick, that would get the Clips out from under Jordan’s contract..but including Bledsoe & another pick is too much.

  6. yousuxxors - Jun 16, 2013 at 4:13 AM

rivers is one of only three coaches (the other being pop/ribs) that actually make a team better having them. if you take that clippers team and swap Jordan for Garnett and rivers for del negro there is a good chance they are playing the heat right now.

  7. BigBeachBall - Jun 16, 2013 at 4:14 AM

    All roads lead to LA

  8. jbeagles23 - Jun 16, 2013 at 7:56 AM

There is no way the lakers get harden. The reason the rockets are going so hard after Howard is to pair those two together. And if this trade goes through these clippers will be in rebuild mode very soon.

  9. cantonbound13 - Jun 16, 2013 at 9:15 AM

Garnett & Rivers for a first rd pick & Jordan. Tell Ainge he’s dreaming if he wants more.

  10. kanemoney - Jun 16, 2013 at 10:11 AM

The celts need to get whatever value they can now. Look at the pistons. They held on too long and now are one of the worst teams in the league.

  11. paulhargis53 - Jun 16, 2013 at 10:41 AM

kb2408, just go back to you lakerluver name, you aren’t fooling anyone. Or, are you adamant about being a moron under multiple names?

I see by your postings that you still don’t understand the cba.

The lakers can’t take back equal money in a sign and trade because they are over the tax apron you idiot!!

Its stuff like this that make you detested on here. Your utter refusal to grasp reality is mind numbing.

Get off of here, you lost a bet. It speaks volumes about the type of person you are that you are still om here posting.

    • loungefly74 - Jun 17, 2013 at 9:18 AM

actually, the Lakers can do certain sign & trades…

don’t you think these trade talks wouldn’t be in the discussion if they could never happen…but they are? what does that mean? that they could happen? why would league execs discuss possibilities of trade scenarios that could never happen?

but back to your Celtics…personally, D. Jordan is not bad compensation for KG…

  12. goofball1 - Jun 16, 2013 at 10:48 AM

Blake and Bledsoe for Howard? Howard could leave the Fakers this summer. Why sending one of our best players and a good player to our enemy? Presently, Howard may be better than those combined but in a couple of years they can be better than Howard. This can be a very stupid trade if they make.

  13. sportsnut101 - Jun 16, 2013 at 11:52 AM

Wasn’t this suppose to happen at trade deadline last yr. it didn’t then it won’t happen now
Garnett has 1 more yr left n plus u will have to watch his minutes

Danny Ainge is idiot I wish he was traded to bobcats/hornets

He’s holding out for more. Like what cp3 as well

If I was the clippers I would just wait till June 30 passes celtics have to make a choice on pierce to buy him out or not. This will force them to take less in clipper deal. For Garnett n rivers trade

I wouldn’t trade Blake n Bledsoe for d12 only because cp3 gets hurt every season

  14. paulhargis53 - Jun 16, 2013 at 12:26 PM

LL/kb24: How many times do you need to be told that the lakers can’t do a sign an trade taking on max salries be cause they are over the tax apron?!?!?! You’re like a small child.

I told you a year ago to read the new cba. You refuse too and continue to make yourself look the fool.
You’d think you’d tire of being a laughingstock on here, but I guess any man that’s in his 40s and is profusely showing his love for Kobe and swooning like a teenage girl is beyond embarassment.

That’s ok, thevrest of us are embarrassed for you.

    What lack of knowledge!

  15. pukpokito - Jun 16, 2013 at 1:25 PM

Get the Celtics deal done.Coach Doc Rivers is a Championship Coach. His greatest strength is maximizing his talent. He will always Coach your team in a position to win an NBA Championship. He has no other agenda and no other goal for your team. Give Bledsoe already.Ask for Courtney Lee in return to pair up with CP3 in the backcourt. There are other back up point guards out there that are just desperate to join the Clippers. You will be fine.

  16. andyhr17 - Jun 16, 2013 at 1:52 PM

Even if the trade doesn’t go through the damage is pretty much done. I don’t see how Doc can go back to the Celtics and coach the same team and everyone act like nothing happened. I thought the pricey contract of Pierce would be what put an end to the Big Three v2.1 era. In the end it was Doc.

    • pukpokito - Jun 16, 2013 at 2:06 PM

all true except Pierce has a friendly buyout before July 1 which makes Pierce helping rather than killing any benefits.

      • andyhr17 - Jun 16, 2013 at 3:41 PM

Yes, the buyout is what I meant as far as putting an end to the Big Three. Once he’s gone, the rest surely follow.

  17. stayhigh_247 - Jun 16, 2013 at 11:48 PM

I want this trade to happen and I’m not even a Clipper fan.

  18. newyorkfootballjets - Jun 17, 2013 at 1:48 AM

Might as well make it a 5 team trade Celts get Jordan and bledsoe — Lakers get lin, omer asik and Amare — Houston gets dwight — Clippes get rondo, Pierce and Garnett — Knicks get Cp3 lol Go knicks!!!!
